Laura Dale: Ubisoft Developing Rabbids & Mario Crossover RPG For Nintendo Switch Launch

This may sound like an April’s Fools joke but I can assure you it’s not. Journalist Laura Dale is reporting that Ubisoft has teamed up with Nintendo to develop a Rabbids and Mario crossover video game that will be ready for the launch of the Nintendo Switch in March. The game is currently being developed under the working title “Mario RPG: Invasion of the Rabbids”and is being developed under the watchful monitoring of Nintendo. Let’s hope it turns out to be fun! Here’s the details you need to know:

The title will focus on the Mario universe being invaded by Ubisoft’s Rabbids characters, some friend and some foe, and will feature a new Bowser form based around the design of the Rabbids as a recurring boss enemy. While there will be numerous cameo appearances from the Mario series’ best known characters, the core party will feature numerous, more minor characters. There is a particular focus on Yoshi as a primary party member, alongside a playable Rabbid.

The title will have a playable demo ready for press to experience in January, and will feature a quicksave system to ensure that saving is possible on short notice if the battery on the Switch handheld is running low. Part of the planned press demo includes the JoyCons vibrating to imply a Rabbid jumping into and out of them from the TV or handheld screen. The idea is to imply your system is infested with Rabbids, and that they could at any time jump out of your controller and interfere with gameplay.

    1. Only kids and teenagers worry about things not being “adult”. Splatoon and Mario are fun as hell and tons of adults play them.

  1. Oh god, I hate the Rabbids… As a Rayman fan they destroyed the series for me during the gap between when Rayman 3 and Rayman Origins came out.
Still I’ll be interested to see how this turns out.

  2. Definitely the weirdest Switch-related rumor I’ve heard yet… It could happen, it’s just kind of weird that they would go with Rabbids instead of Rayman. Rayman makes a lot more sense. But the game could be fun if they make it right!

  3. The game sounds somewhat interesting but could cause a lot of disturbance towards Mario and Rabbids fans maybe? Either way, it’s made me intrigued on how Ubisoft plans out the gameplay :D #HypeClub (?)

  4. Hmm, maybe im in the minority here, but this sounds very appealing. If it has anything close to the origins or legends art style, ill definitely pick it up.

    1. ||I better see all their biggest weapons on the Switch considering we are giving them yet another chance of promoting their garbage, or I’ll somehow convince High Command to take action against their potential betrayal…||

  5. Fuck, I’ve already had enough of these furry screaming bastards. They are like Minions, annoying little shits that will never go away because they appeal to kids.

    1. The Rabbids were the Minions before it was cool.

Don’t blame the Minions, blame the Rabbids.

Great, now I’m starting to sound stereotypical since Australia hates rabbits enough for destroying wildlife and crops.

        1. I’ll admit, I over drank out of fear and anxiety over the fact we have to go to the worst part of the city for a fucking field trip. You can’t blame me for feeling that way.

  6. So wait… Will this be a part of the Mario & Luigi series? Pretty sure Nintendo said they had no room for two Mario RPG series, hence why people can’t get their 1000 year door style Paper Mario games anymore… so if it isn’t part of the series, it means they are just too lazy to bother with Paper Mario RPG games anymore?

      1. According to a quick google search, Paper Mario is developed by Intelligent Systems Co., Ltd. Whereas Mario & Luigi are developed by AlphaDream Corporation, Ltd. So the whole having two RPGs thing was just a lame excuse. Why would they say that? Who knows Nintendo can be weird sometimes.

        1. I wouldn’t say it is an excuse. They told people how it is going to be. Going forward people should know Paper Mario will not be a RPG.

  7. I wonder if this means Rayman or a Rabbid will be playable in the next Smash. I noticed there are characters that make a crossover or reference with/to Nintendo before being playable in smash. Sonic has the Olympics, Pac-man has Mario kart, and Bayonetta has Nintendo costumes.

Personally, I hope this is not true. The list of third party companies that have been represented in Smash, unless you don’t count Bayonetta as Sega, is fine as it is.

    1. As long as 3rd party characters are only 3-10% of the playable characters compared to the other 90-97% being Nintendo characters, I’m fine with there being a couple of 3rd party characters. To bitch about a small number of 3rd party characters compared to the numerous Nintendo characters is the same as bitching about 10-15 out of over 40-50 characters being sword wielders. It’s silly & honestly laughable.

  8. I really enjoyed the Rabbids characters in the past. They genuinely made me laugh. However, the best part of any Rabbids game was the cut-scenes when you were not actually playing.

The Rabbids TV show is where they belonged all along. Sadly, they made that show so lazily they could not even be bothered to create more than a handful of “Actors” (digital puppets, whatever the official term is) to use in the show, to the extent it really stood out. They didn’t even have a single ‘Little Girl’ character in their entire world. I watched and was entertained by it, regardless.

I have a Casual fondness for the Rabbids characters, but since they have never been involved in Anything that didn’t feel half-baked (or less), it is hard to get excited about ANYTHING involving them.

I hope this is not what Ubisoft is doing INSTEAD-OF BG&E2.

… and for this to be the Legacy of Mario RPG as well?

Since the First was a Nintendo/Square collaboration, the idea that this would be Nintendo/Ubisoft feels fine … but exclusively focused around RABBIDS??

I think that is a mistake. This concept underwhelmes me.

  9. It’d be awesome if Rayman makes a guest appearance! And he could be summoned in battle, to give the Rabbids a good scaring before beating them up, since they’ll remember Rayman.

  10. Worst case scenario is that it is another fun, non-barrier breaking Mario RPG title with some annoying rabbit creatures thrown in. Sign me up, regardless!

  11. I can actually see how this crazy crossover can work. Ubisoft just needs to get some stuff right first:

First, make the Rabbids have a unique sense of humor and not the immature toilet and fart jokes. They gotta be funny for everyone.

Second, make the game run with the Ubiart engine. That’ll make the game extremely appealing for both fans!

And finally, make it like the other Mario RPG games. Story, plots, characters, and cool party members.

All those things can actually make the game amazing.

  12. LOL So this is Ubisoft’s support for the Switch?! XD It’s no different from the Wii U. With that said, don’t expect Ubisoft to stick around the Switch for long. Ubisoft can only give the Switch the breadcrumbs of its franchises.

  13. The solution to a problem no one had. Nobody likes rabbids, and The Mario rpg with Square is a classic. They should have rebooted or made a sequel to the origina Mario RPG.

  14. I’d rather see a new Mario RPG between Square Enix & Nintendo! ESPECIALLY if Paper Mario is doomed to be a shallow excuse for an RPG from this moment forward. Mario & Luigi is not a suitable replacement for Paper Mario’s first two games no matter how much Nintendo tries to push it off as. I don’t understand it. Why such hate for what Paper Mario use to be, Ninty? It was a true RPG with multiple party members with their own original designs & their own personalities & abilities. Anyone that thinks Mario & Luigi is a suitable replacement to that are idiots. Unless the burial of what Paper Mario use to be is just them getting ready to introduce a third RPG because they & Square Enix have been planning to revive Super Mario RPG for a couple of years now, I don’t want it & Mario RPGs are dead to me.
