In a not so surprisingly announcement, Playtonic recently cancelled the Wii U version of their upcoming game. While a version of Yooka-Laylee for Nintendo’s console was promised in their original Kickstarter, the game is no longer coming to the Wii U. However, they have since elaborated as to why they had to make this difficult decision. On their recently updated FAQ page, the company revealed that they had been working for months to try and get the game to run correctly on the system, but could never get it working quite right. Check out their official statement below.
The Playtonic team wanted to explore every possible avenue before making the very difficult decision to transfer development from the Wii U. Our developers worked tirelessly over many months in attempt to solve our technical issues, but unfortunately it’s not been possible to bring Yooka-Laylee to Wii U as originally planned.

I backed it for the Wii U for quite a large number, when it got moved over to the Switch it was no big deal for me. A lot of people I know who backed it for the Wii U don’t really care and are either getting it on PC or waiting for the Switch. Fraud would be Playtonic taking the money and not delivering on anything. They are still giving Wii U backers to switch to another version of the game.
So, people who buy game consoles off craigslist are not victims of a fraud if they at least get some “fuck you” package out of it?

Well actually Christmas day marks the first day of the Christmas season. So if they hold off it’ll have to be until January 8 to satisfy everyone.
They have been trying to add more to the game’s base mechanics over recent months and they have trouble adapting these to the system. Let us not forget that the hardware of the wii u is supremely over complicated.

Oh well, Wii U is dead. Hopefully Nintendo canceles BotW Wii U. It’s been suffering long enough.
They won’t and I guess it’s a good thing. They made quite some money with releasing Twilight Princess on the Gamecube and although the WiiU was about half as successful as the gamecube was, it still could mean quite some money coming from WiiU-owners.
I remember the same thing being said about minecraft…..oh wait.
Yeah, we have games like Mario Kart 8 and Smash 4 running in HD at 60fps on the Wii U but Yooka-Laylee can’t do it because technical problems, i call this, bullshit.

Repeat article… now with sensationalist title. Made me think for a second they were “admitting” that the bogus PR statement was just a nice way of saying the Wii U has been dead for some time.
This is not a suprise, knowing that the game uses Unreal Engine. The engine runs like shit on Wii U, when you also need accomplementary software to port it to the system. And even with all this it runs poorly. I also believe that the PC and Wii U versions of the game were being made by the main team, while the other versions were made by 3rd party developers :/
I’m still sad that they axed the Wii U ver. but this is one case that I won’t hold a grudge for doing so. Now if Ninty axed the Wii U ver. of Breath of the Wild that i will hold a grudge. I’m still looking forward to Yooka-Laylee on Switch.
Even as a backer for the wii u version i wouldnt really care about this either way. After all, I paid for a game to be developed, not to get a copy of it. If i can only buy it on the PC until i get a switch then so be it, big friggin deal.
This seems to be the excuse for a lot of developers cancelling Wii U versions. I hope the Switch ends up being easier to develop for alongside PS4/XBO so we see less cancelled games on Nintendo platforms.
