IGN recently interviewed Metroid co-creator and longtime series producer Yoshio Sakomoto. Sakomoto answered questions about Metroid: Samus Returns whilst IGN played the new title that’s coming to 3DS September 15th. Details about the games’ development time, new content, backstory and more were mentioned and I’ve included a few excerpts from their chat below. Click here to check out the whole interview.
On Metroid: Samus Returns being a remake:
“It’s the same game. … All of the fundamental design is the same … in that the basic map structure is all based off the Metroid II map. Basically what we’ve done is we’ve used this new technology that we have at our fingertips to just polish up what was already there and to improve upon it. Maybe the thing that felt so different was that it was in full color.”
On the game potentially having new content past what’s in the original:
“I believe that yes you can go ahead and look forward to some of those same experiences that you had with Zero Mission.”
On adding more backstory:
“[In] this game there’s a lot of background, there’s a lot of lore involved in this title. But it’s not like a novel or something. It incorporates the lore, but it’s not integral to the gameplay experience. It’s in the background more than in the foreground.
There is definitely information for the players to get that revolves around sort of the larger storyline.”
On how long the game is in development:
“We started around two years ago, so it’s been about two years… It’s almost there. It’s quite a ways along. We want everyone to play Metroid this year. We would love for it to be a Year of Metroid, as it were.”

This game looks amazing. If I can, I’ll be getting the special edition day one!
2 years huh?
Sounds like they started right when Federation Force hit the fan. Shokio was so right in his last video.
That explains why it looks a bit like Federation Force, but in a good way. The menu layout and some of the things about the graphics remind me of Federation Force…could they really have been crazy enough to release that JUST to get us more hype for “Samus Returns”?
That’s not what I was implying.
“Oh god, fans aren’t reacting well to Federation Force. Get a new 3DS game started, STAT!!! And get a team together for Prime4!!!”
the game uses alot of metroid prime sound effects and used Other M animations so…
||There are no strings on me or Metroid anymore…||
What do you mean by that, Commander?
||I want to see shadowvegeta the scholar interpret it first…||
I’m gonna guess Ultron. Either that or Pinocchio.
I agree with RidleySlayer. Definitely has to be Ultron!
“…We would love for it to be a Year of Metroid, as it were.”
yeah not like there was an anniversary worth celebrating last year.
there’s only gonna be like 2 and a half months left of the year when it comes out but alright
This will be a day 1 buy from me, same with Prime 4. Show ’em these are the REAL Metroid games people want!
Can every year be the Year of Metroid?
Was slightly excited until I watched the trailer for it.
The game looks great, if you’re into 2D gameplay. Sadly the fast paced action and incredible multiplayer choas of Hunters isn’t there. No worries though, plenty of game’s to play.
That’s because this is nothing like hunters?
Why are you answering my comment with a question relating to exactly what I’ve already typed?
Is this your version of trolling, cuz it’s not very good.
:/.
Yes, this is the classic Metroid style, as it should be.
I’m so glad this is happening. It’s crazy to think it’s been over 13 YEARS since the last 2D Metroid game.
I know right. Hopefully this game sells really well so we get more 2d metroid love!

Now if they can just give us a sequel that takes place AFTER Fusion… Unless Metroid “Prime 4” is actually gonna take place after Fusion instead of being before Metroid II like the original Metroid Prime Trilogy did.
