Shigefumi Hino Confirms Mario Was Actually Punching Yoshi In The Head

On the official Nintendo website, Nintendo developers Takashi Tezuka and Shigefumi Hino were interviewed about the creation of Super Mario World.

During the interview, the longstanding debate regarding Mario’s animation when he’s riding Yoshi was brought up. People have often debated whether Mario was pointing at Yoshi to command him to use his tongue, or if in fact, he was punching Yoshi in the back of the head.

Hino has cleared this up, by explaining what he meant in his original drawings. “Lots of people think that while Mario is pointing his finger forward, he’s saying ‘Go,’ and Yoshi’s tongue comes out,” said Hino. “However, the set up that I drew was that when Mario punches Yoshi in the head, the character’s tongue shoots out in surprise.”

“What’s more,” Hino continued, “there’s an added ‘bop’ sound. However, it seemed like people would say ‘Poor Yoshi,’ so that’s why it became that Mario is saying ‘Go.'”

So, there you have it, a definitive answer from the developers themselves, it turns out that we should actually have been feeling sorry for Yoshi!

    1. As amusing as this is, I just wanted to report what results I found from looking into the topical matter.
The article, or the quote it uses as a basis, seems to be very much mistranslated.

In the article is says: “[…] it seemed like people would say ‘Poor Yoshi,’ so that’s why it became that Mario is saying ‘Go’.”

When the translation is actually is: “[…] as it seemed that the sound “Yoshi is sad” was heard, I decided that Mario said “Go” [instead].”

In summary: Shigefumi Hino’s initial concept was indeed that Mario hit’s Yoshi on the head, but was changed (before release) into the “Go!” and pointing gesture.
(Viewing the animation at a slower speed seems to suppost this, as the hand passes next to Yoshi’s for at least a frame.)

      -End of Report.

*gives the animation a closer look* Oh yeah! I see the finger pointing now! Good, good. I’d hope by this point that Mario stopped being abusive to animals after the whole Donkey Kong incident he was involved in. I’d like to think he realized Donkey Kong going on a rampage was his own damn fault so he curbed that attitude. Least with animals that aren’t trying to hurt him first, that is.

  1. Well I’m not one of you who pretends to be shocked after ignoring his obvious malicious abuse for decades. His disregard for sentient life was well documented before you all decided to give him a pass. What did you all fool yourselves into believing he was doing with that whip in Donkey Kong Jr?

Praciticing medicine without qualifications, Kidnapping and child endangerment by leaving Donkey Kong Jr. alone without a parent, suspected involvement in biased officiating in boxing matches, the list goes on and on!

Let’s not forget the most horrific of all! The manual for Super Mario Bros. tells us that Bowser had transformed the people of the mushroom kinddom into bricks and blocks. Those things Mario’s been obliterating his entire career? Those are people! Well I for one have never forgotten his legacy of mass murder. This story is no surprise for “woke” people who are paying attention to the world around them. I think it’s time we start a moveon.org petition.

Oh, and /s because the internet is bad enough that someone might take me seriously.

  2. Yes, because Mario is a horrible person who doesn’t deserve any love and should have his entire character and backstory retconedto that of a sociopath.

    You win, Dorky Bits!

    NO.

  3. He did kill plenty of Yoshis before using them to reach places he couldn’t reach normally so a little punch doesn’t seem like much of a big deal tbh, probably a friendly one you know kinda like a fist bro sort of thing Idk.

No! Mario stopped abusing his pets after the whole Donkey Kong incident! He only hurts animals that serve Bowser these days! (Of course, it does kind of fit since we have Mario sacrifice Yoshi all the time to save our own life. And he did use to abuse Donkey Kong. Not to mention all the other animals he abuses in order to stop Bowser. I guess it’s safe to assume canon wise that Mario doesn’t actually sacrifice Yoshi in the story & that is just more or less something us, the player, does.)

Well someone was upset I came on a bunch of articles pointing out in my comment on those articles about how I won’t get this or that game on the Switch but the PS4 instead. So instead of repeating it over & over, I just put it in my name to save myself the trouble. So it’s not an unnecessary name for me.
