Roguelike Dungeon Crawler Tangledeep Coming To Nintendo Switch

Developer Impact Gameworks have announced that their “roguelike dungeon crawler” game Tangledeep will be released on the Nintendo Switch sometime next year. Although we’re not aware of a solid release date yet, the title sounds promising and may well be worth keeping tabs on. Players will get to enjoy ‘rich, tactical turn-based’ gameplay within an ever-changing labyrinth all in gorgeous 16-bit graphics.

Grant Kirkhope is one of the composers behind the music for the title and is best known for his contributions towards Goldeneye, Banjo-Kazooie and the recently released, well-received Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle for Switch. Players have the choice of listening to the games’ music between two forms; Instrumental or in a SNES-style for that extra retro feel.

It’s already available on Steam via Early Access and the description certainly paints a very good picture of Tangledeep.

Tangledeep combines the 16-bit graphics and polish of classic SNES-era RPGs with elements from roguelikes and dungeon crawlers to create a magical experience for players of all skill levels. Trapped in underground villages with no memory of the world at the surface, you must survive an ever-changing labyrinth to discover what lies above. Experience rich, tactical, turn-based gameplay as you explore a sprawling dungeon that’s different each time you play. Tangledeep features a customizable job system and hundreds of collectable items that allow you to approach each playthrough in a totally new way!

    1. It isn’t bad graphically wise. Ages ago this type of graphics was driven by hardware’s limits. Now it’s just an artistic point of view, and some games offer very good pixel art. Some others are just ugly. This one is ok, but Stardew Valley for example is excellent and very charming. I’m in for very good pixel art like Stardew or Octopath. We need everything good we can have, diversity is richness. Then there is ugly s* like Super Meat Boy that’s not really needed. Just a waste of pixels.

  1. The game looks ok, but I can’t stand the lack of animation on the character. It doesn’t take much effort to make the characters turn the direction they are facing. Seeing them strafe left and right and walk backwards would be too jarring for me to play.
