Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Is Being Criticized For “Racist Mr. Game & Watch”

Mr. Game & Watch is one of the many returning fighters that have been tweaked for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. His forward smash attack now includes a more direct reference to the Fire Attack Game & Watch game, in which he is seen dressed as an Indian chief. Because of this depiction, Mr. Game & Watch’s appearance is being criticized as a racist gesture toward Native Americans. You can learn more about this claim in the embedded video below:

      1. lol I’m sorry beef but your comeback (if you could even call it that) is awful and just makes you look even worse. Grow up?

      2. Uhhhh liberals are the ones that wanna cry racism over little things. I bet you also want to boycott the because of this. Aren’t you?

    1. Ah the internet. I’ll be the first to admit that the internet has produced some obnoxious liberals (basically, we’ve given a platform to every idiot that wants one, so representation from all parts of the spectrum vomit idiocy into the void). But someone saying “hey, some people really don’t like this, let’s maybe rethink doing it”, is just respecting others. Years ago I had a friend tell me she didn’t like when I called someone a “retard” because she had a sibling with a learning disability. I didn’t say “suck it up, I can say what I want,” because we weren’t on the internet and I genuinely cared. It didn’t hurt me any to make a conscious effort to kick the habit of using that. I’m not going to tell a comedian to not use it, or protest a movie, or what have you, but I’ll go out of my way to not use it myself. That’s respecting others. My 4 year old gets it.

You wouldn’t care if this wasn’t in the game. You wouldn’t know. But when you find out that it might be removed because someone was offended by it, you HAVE TO HAVE IT IN THE GAME!? That seems pretty warped.

      1. That was refreshing and thoughtful commentary. I wish more people could discuss issues in forums like these in the manner in which you you have. Bravo.

      2. You just said at the end of your post your not telling a movie or what ever to stop or remove but that’s what exactly is happening people are trying to force a public game to remove it this not one individual to another its million owner media and the majority wants it.

        1. I know that is happening. My point is about discourse on the internet compared to a real life person. This liberal doesn’t look at this image and say OMG THIS MUST CHANGE LETS TAKE TO TWITTER, I’M SO UPSET.” Those people actually aren’t the majority. But I do look at it and go “yep, that’s basically blackface for Native Americans, I understand why some people would want this changed, and since it doesn’t affect me in any way (and again, I respect people’s different experiences), I’m not going to take to twitter and scream about whiney snowflakes.” Even within the population, there are going to be Native Americans who don’t have an issue, but there are many who have experienced this imagery in direct ways, that don’t want to see it used in their video games.

So as a Japanese content creator, if someone came to me and explained their experience with that imagery, I’d go “oh, I’m sorry, that wasn’t my intent.” Out of respect for that portion of my audience, I’m going to need to consider whether or not these few frames of animation are something I can change. Just like if a friend told me they didn’t like a certain word or thing that I did, I would consider changing my behavior. If my four year old says something, and a friend tells her it hurts their feelings, I’m not raising her to say “STOP BEING BUTTHURT, I CAN DO WHAT I WANT, FIRST AMENDMENT!” because people don’t function that way in the real world. So why do people act that way online?

      3. “. I’ll be the first to admit that the internet has produced some obnoxious liberals (basically, we’ve given a platform to every idiot that wants one, so representation from all parts of the spectrum vomit idiocy into the void). ”

We aren’t talking about being obnoxious. We’re talking about using insults and slander as the first and foremost means of getting what you want. It isn’t some liberals off in a corner. That’s the primary argument from mainstream liberal media on every single subject of interest.

“But someone saying “hey, some people really don’t like this, let’s maybe rethink doing it”, is just respecting others. ”

And this is a direct and open lie about what is happening. I would have hoped you would have more integrity than that. This was no respectful request out of consideration for someone’s feelings. This is the consistent tactic used by the social left. “Behave how we want you to behave, or we’ll publicly slander you until you do.” It is obvious beyond obvious that there was no racism intended in the headdress, and meaning in media can not exist without intent.

Moreover, there isn’t a single product you can make in the public space that doesn’t offend someone. Should we remove the Belmonts from the game because they are appropriating Christian history and culture? Shoot, Mario himself is an italian stereotype. I’m certain I can find an Italian somewhere who would be offended by that too. So I guess we need to stop making Mario games.

This is the fundamental problem with the feigned “respect for others” that liberals profess to believe so dearly in. It very quickly requires them to set a double double standard virtually every single time they try and impose it. It’s that obvious lack of sincerity and hypocrisy which has caused a massive majority of every people in the country, every minority, to cite political correctness as a major problem in the United States. When I say massive majority, I mean in a recent poll well over 80% of Native Americans cited political correctness as a problem.

Not allowing people to blackmail you into controlling your innocent behavior under threat of public slander is not flaw.

        1. I’m specifically talking about discussions in real life, not on the internet, where these insults and slander (which are spewed out by both sides of the isle on the internet) don’t exist between functional adults. Think about it. I’ve never had an individual question my integrity and call me a liar like you just did to my face. Because if you knew me, and were interacting with a person and not a faceless example for you to argue against, you simply wouldn’t do that. I’m trying to represent a genuine human being that has different ideologies than you but genuinely means well, instead of the fabricated image we can create by massing together strangers on the internet. You’re fighting against censorship, which is a good fight! But when people post comments like “gorram butthurt liberals,” they’re not effecting change. They’re literally doing the opposite, driving people further into their own beliefs. It’s ineffective, a waste of time, and I can only assume happens for their own catharsis.

I did not say that this needs changed. I specifically said that I’m not crusading for things like that. I said that I, ME, personally, would consider changing it as a content creator. Not that I would change it. That I would take it into consideration, apologize and explain my lack of intent, and consider if it would affect my creation to make a change. I would talk to those individuals with respect, and express concern. My respect is not feigned. I have integrity. I try to be open and honest. And I try to talk to people on the internet like they’re human beings.

          1. No it’s spewed out by the left side of the isle on the internet) and it DOES exist between functional adults.

Nobody questioned your integrity and called me a liar so stop making that crap up.

            There are no faceless examples.

If you were actually representing a genuine human being that has different ideologies then you have failed. No the person doesn’t mean well, Also there are no fabricated images of anything.

When people post comments like “butthurt liberals,” they ARE effecting change. They’re NOT doing the opposite, they are actually driving people back from their own beliefs and that’s a good thing. It’s not ineffective, it’s worthy of time, and their own catharsis is nothing to be important.

Yes you did say this needs changed.

You definitely are crusading for things like that.

No dude if you actually changed it then you would get and for a good reason.

Don’t take anything to consideration, don’t apologize and explain and there is no lack of intent, it won’t affect the creation to make a change.

Give those individuals NO respect, and do NOT express concern. All that is going to do is make you bend the knee and you sir are a pussy.

Your respect is feigned. You don’t have any integrity. You never tried to be open and honest.

You never talked to people on the internet like they’re human beings. You are a liar.

        2. I’m specifically talking about discussions in real life, not on the internet, where these insults and slander (which are spewed out by both sides of the isle on the internet) don’t exist between functional adults. Think about it. I’ve never had an individual question my integrity and call me a liar like you just did to my face. ” meaning in media can not exist without intent.” So one of my worthless degrees in in literature (not a great idea folks, that’s why I married a doc). We’d have very little to talk about when we read books if we only worried about authorial intent. Authors love to talk to readers and see things in their works that they didn’t see. It’s impossible to remove the audience and their interpretive lens from a piece of work. It’s part of the fun of creating.

      4. Yea but the problem with that is that there is always something someone doesn’t like something or wants something changed. Video games are being blamed for shootings and murders in America. Should we stop making games like call of duty and battlefield just because some people claim that’s the cause?

        1. I’m talking about discourse, not censorship. Specifically the way we discuss topics in person versus how we do it online, with both sides being at fault.

If you want my personal opinion on the topic, I’m not calling for any censorship, but I also don’t believe it’s up to me to police what someone should or shouldn’t be offended by, simply because I’m not offended. I do not believe the government should be involved in those decisions.

We all have different experiences, and people can have very real feelings and reactions. In person, you would treat those feelings with respect, even if you didn’t agree or understand. But online, it’s all too easy to take all those faceless strangers’ experiences and lump them into one dehumanized, valueless, whiney snowflake (conservative or liberal).

I also don’t actually see a connection between your example and racial iconography/racism. One has no evidence of occurring and the other does. I recognize that you’re trying to say people being offended by ANY content is no different from racial content, but that’s ignoring a massive history of racially motivated violence/mistreatment (compared to near zero history of video game motivated violence). So yes, I do think that ignoring that history and using racial iconography is something that I would avoid as a content creator and I would understand people wanting to not see that, whereas I would be less inclined to worry about portrayals of violence. But I also totally get why people don’t want to see people getting ripped in half etc.

I think another big difference is that your audience isn’t expecting racial iconography to show up in their Nintendo game (ignoring the Mario thing here), whereas it’s pretty easy to stay clear of violence by not buying Grand Theft Auto.

    2. Take it easy man, this is one guys opinion. You shouldn’t get so worked up over these things, you sound more upset than the guy who made the video

    3. Your pride must be tiny if liberals are to blame for being offended over something a native American probably finds racist… But who am I to use logic and deductive reasoning when it comes to these things. I’m guessing you are from a red state.

Grow up baby. Its not politically motivated. People are allowed to be offended by things. You offended by liberals. Me offended by a seemingly lack of group intelligence in the conservative community.

      1. ” Me offended by a seemingly lack of group intelligence in the conservative community.”

Pro-tip. When you’re trying to insult the intelligence of hundreds of millions of people at once, proofread that thing a couple times.

Sentence structure like that while you’re just insulting and providing no thought of substance is well deserving of a few “Orange man bad” memes.

      2. Meanwhile, Cronotose has nothing smart to say so he or she is just trying to nit-pick a response. Word from the wise and a bit more pro-tip, using “reddit” “style” “responses” is a bit more insulting. As well as criticizing someone elses’ grammar shows you have nothing valuable to say or add to a response. But who am I to critique people whom across the globe trot on like they are superior political movement. Time to break out the baby counter because I got not just one, but TWO offended conservatives.

Also while we’re at it DJ comes back with a less than witty response. -10 points to Slytherin

        1. And here we have amak11 who didn’t debunk anything and has nothing smart to say unlike Cronotose.
He isn’t nitpicking a response you dumbass liberal. No it isn’t insulting, it’s harmful. Criticizing someone’s grammar is a smart move and who the fuck are you to say he has nothing valuable to say when you didn’t say anything that’s even factual. Dude Cronotose said everything factual and even debunked the liberal. You didn’t do jack. Yes who are you to critique people who are from a movement who actually loves and cares for this country unlike you retarded liberals. We don’t think we are the superior movement because we already are. Time to break out the period counter because not only have you proven yourself to be weak, but you also proven yourself to be a liar, a loser and a pathetic and worthless chump acting all smug when you didn’t do anything to debunk any points. Dude you and all of your friends are offended liberals. And here you are calling someone out all because you can’t give a better response than them. You’re a hypocrite. -5000 to Griffyndor

      3. Who says it’s Native Americans getting upset? Maybe it is just a bunch of white people feeling guilty for the acts of their ancestors, so they feel if they call something like this racist that it will absolve them of the sins of their ancestors. And to be fair, as another here said, it usually is someone from the left that gets offended about these sorts of things.

Anyway, they can be offended if they want. But they should also know not everyone is going to agree with them. And even if someone doesn’t agree with them, it doesn’t automatically make them racist, conservative, a Trump supporter, a misogynist, etc. as even some liberals could disagree with some of the people in their own court. Of course, it’s not like there is only the left side & the right side as there is the middle ground, as well.

      4. Ouch. Pretty hurtful. I thought you cared about others. I guess unless they have a different opinion than yours then its opening season

      5. If you wouldn’t be completely dumb you’d understand that grammar says something about your intelligence (unless you have some sort of reading/writing disorder of course) and therefore claiming someone is unintelligent and then writing it with many grammatical errors is very hypocritical.

    4. No offense, but this whole anti liberalism thing is immature and probably shows less perfect conservatism is. Conservatives in general has problems too likely. Equality is mainly important and I don’t think I agree with the whole “racist” claim.

      1. The whole anti liberalism thing is NOT immature. Dude if you want immature then take a look at the anti conservatism. THAT is immature. No it shows how more perfect conservatism is. Conservatives in generals don’t have any problems . Equality is NOT important and no fuck off. The racist claim these liberals try to push are fucking weak and bullshit

    5. Your threat makes me recall how someone is trying to get Midnight’s Edge banned from the Star Trek Facebook group because they are attacking (for good reason) Star Trek Discovery. CBS and their shills are desperate to make that flaming pile of shit work.

Anyway, don’t mind me so carry on what ya doing.

  1. People seem to complain about anything these days, hopefully based Sakurai won’t let this get patched out, nor Treehouse.

    1. I really don’t care if it gets patched out. It’s just a minor attack design, you shouldn’t really care this much about it.

      1. Yes you should. Its directly making a call back to a classic piece of Nintendo’s history, pretty much the main point of the series.

        1. No you shouldn’t you fucking retard. It is NOT making a call back to Nintendo’s history. This is NOT main point of the series and even if it became the point you’re acting like it’s a bad thing. Grow the fuck up you dumbass fag

      1. With that sombrero? Mexicans were defending that saying they were proud that a part of their culture was in a mario game. I would think that’s pretty cool too unless it was taken in a derogatory way like when Jimmy Kimmel made fun of karl malone and the way he talked. (Yea it exists on youtube)

  2. Seriously?
I mean granted the coincidence IS questionable, but I think this was just simply an accident.
I think they were just trying to pay homage to one of the original Game & Watch games by including a reference that matched with his fire stick attack.

They’re just trying to add in as many Game & Watch references in one character as possible. Let’s not forget that Mr. Game & Watch can turn into a giant octopus just because it was referencing a Game & Watch game. Does that mean it’s racist against octopi?
No, of course not. It’s just a cool tidbit that’s a part of Mr. Game & Watch’s moveset.

    1. Japan has a cultural history with blackface and I assume that extends to these sorts of Native American caricatures. Since it’s removed from the source, there aren’t people in Japan fighting against it. It’s led to some awkward censoring in anime before (Mr. Popo getting turned blue in Dragon Ball comes to mind). It’s actually surprising that it wasn’t caught and removed.

        1. Right. But on the other hand, Mr. Popo is not just accidentally blackface. He’s part of a Japanese tradition that’s removed from the US’s sensitivity. It’s not racist by intent, but it’s still blackface. In the US, there is a portion of the population that have had experiences with this specific image that have led them to fight against it. When you’re putting your content into that environment, it’s both respectful and economically beneficial to think if it’s something that can and should be changed.

          1. Mr. Popo isn’t even human, though, and is some kind of fat deity with pointy ears. I don’t see anything wrong with it as it’s not even supposed to be a black human being. I mean, it’d be like saying Darth Maul is blackface because most of his skin is black with red pigments scattered about when, in fact, he isn’t even human. Context should matter but people ignore it because of the hyper-offended culture we apparently live in these days.

            1. Mr. Popo is intentionally using black face/Sambo per Japanese tradition. It’s has to do with the facial features as well, such as the lips and eyes. Darth Maul, beyond a tiny bit of black on his face, doesn’t share those very specific features. It’s coming from the same place that the Pokemon Jynx is. I believe it was popularized in Japan in the 60s with a toy of some sorts. Compare the imagery of those characters to that in this article from the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture:

              https://nmaahc.si.edu/blog-post/blackface-birth-american-stereotype

My personal experiences prevent me from being offended by these things, but I’m well aware of the history of the iconography and WHY people can be. If a black friend told you black face was offensive to him (maybe they experienced it in a bullying way before), would you start telling them to stop enabling the hyper-offended culture and suck it up?

Look, I get where you’re coming from, because I’ve seen the same things you have. A bunch of keyboard activists piling on things on Twitter to feel good about themselves. But the counter movement to that is just as absurd. Neither of those conversations has ever come close to resembling the conversations that I see day to day with actual adults.

              1. I won’t tell a black friend something like that. Or any black person that. BUT even if Mr. Popo was intentionally designed with black face in mind, I see it as them using black face for a creative choice & not for anything nefarious in some attempt to insult and belittle black people. I mean, is it really racist to have a non-human have features reminiscent of a racial stereotype? Or is the racial stereotype simply used to create a fictional being? If we wouldst to be visited by aliens that actually have the facial appearance of black face, would we scream at the aliens for being racists? It’d be pretty silly to do so since that’s simply how the creatures look.

                1. So this specific case is tricky, because black face in Japan was brought from the States and evolved on its own removed from the history of it, without groups like the NAACP fighting against it. Intent to harm is pretty unlikely given the source. In the US, intent to harm is certainly more likely.

I think the crux of your questioning is “can you be racist without intent?” I hope I’m not misinterpreting, but thats really at the heart of the debate. Someone says “hey dude, that’s racist” and that person’s saying “no! I’m not racist, I have black friends, I don’t think badly about black people at all, I can’t have done something racist!” For example, I’ve had conversations with my wife’s very southern aunt and uncle, who are sweet loving people that will feed you all day, but have explained to me in MANY ways that they love black people and hate the N-words, talking about how if an N-word ever came into their house they’d get their guns, etc. To them, black people who behave or dress in a certain way are fine, but the others are *insert racist epitaph here* They’re pretty racist, I’d hate to be in a room with them and some of my black friends together, but they’re convinced that they’re not. Even my mom has made comments about black people’s skin or how “they just build muscle faster” where I’m like “okay mom, dial that back a notch or two”. So I do think that you can be racist without intent, and I think the left needs to be more aware of that, stop jumping down people’s throats, and start opening up more productive conversations about WHY they might have an issue.

I do think that if I personally created fiction using depictions that resembled racial iconography, knowing the history of it like I do, and even if the character was non-human, I’d be justifiably called out for it. Just because I made it an elf, doesn’t mean it’s not racist. Sambo was a work of fiction too. Lots of people enjoyed the ridiculous depictions of a little black boy, at the expense, degradation, and dehumanization of the African Americans at the time.

I do promise I won’t call any aliens racist if they show up looking like some of our more racist iconography, however. Species tensions would probably be the bigger concern at that point.

                  1. Black face in Japan does not exist and neither was brought from the States and NEVER evolved on its own and there is no history of it, also the NAACP sucks.

No in the US, intent to harm is certainly less likely.

That isn’t the crux of his questioning.

That is NOT at the heart of the debate.

They ARE NOT racist, they’re simply protecting their home.

Dude your mom is on the mark.

So no you cannot be racist without intent, and the left does NOT need to be more aware of something that doesn’t exist.

The left isn’t going to do any of what you just said..

Dude if you personally created fiction using depictions that resembled racial iconography, knowing the history of it and if the character was non-human, you would NOT be justifiably called out for it.

No dumbass just because you made it an elf, doesn’t mean it’s racist.

                    Nobody cares about Sambo.

Not a lot of people enjoyed the ridiculous depictions of a little black boy,and there is no expense, degradation, and or dehumanization of the African Americans. All of that is false.

No dude you should call any aliens racist if they show up but aliens don’t exist.

We don’t have any racist iconography.

Species tensions would NOT be the bigger concern at that point.

                    You are once again: WRONG.
Black face in Japan does not exist and neither was brought from the States and NEVER evolved on its own and there is no history of it, also the NAACP sucks.

              2. Mr. Popo is NOT intentionally using black face/Sambo per Japanese tradition.

It’s has NOTHING to do with the facial features.

                NOBODY shares those specific features.

It’s NOT coming from the place that the Pokemon Jynx is.

It was NOT popularized in Japan in anything.

The imagery of those characters to that in this article from the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture is a false comparison.

Yeah no the history of the iconography is why people CANNOT and SHOULD NOT be.

NOBODY is going to tell their black friend stop enabling the hyper-offended culture and suck it up. Dude fuck off with that. I’m a black man and i don’t get offended by this shit. It was 100 years ago. Get over it.

No the counter movement to that is NOT absurd. It’s actually good. MANY of the right’s great and intelligent conversations has ALWAYS come close to resembling the conversations that you see day to day with actual adults.

          2. It is NOT blackface dumbass. And no there is no portion of people in the US who tried to fight against it. No it isn’t respectful or economically beneficial. Stfu. It cannot and shouldn’t be changed you dumbass liberal

      1. There are no people in Japan fighting against it because THEY DONT GIVE A SHIT AND NEITHER DO THE NATIVE AMERICANS. Dude stop with the bullshit. Japan doesn’t have a history with blackface stfu

  3. There are far more racist things in the news everyday. It’s whats in now in Murica sadly . For the title of the video to say “Smash Bros is supposedly racist” is the biggest pig poop title ever just so ppl will click.
For the record, my friend is a Native American and he thought it was cool that he did that just as he think T. Hawk is cool in Street Fighter. He says he will use Mr Game and Watch because of that lol.

        1. Haha, I wasn’t spesific enough. I feel a lot of my comments just never see the day of light because of “awaiting moderation”, even though my Norwegian’s English-skills tries to avoid triggerwords xP Love your site! I check it every day!

          1. Ah! Yeah, I understand :( The WordPress commenting system seems to be flagging random words and I’m not entirely sure why. I’ve been checking the comment queue as frequently as I can. Thanks again for your support :)

  4. Want an opinion from a real goddamn Native American?

This fat white boy needs to shut his twinkie hole and find a real problem to bitch about.

    1. My thoughts too. “Smash Bros is racist!” Said no one ever, but this dude thought he could make a video given the current climate in the US and boom….clicks and a cess pool in the comments section. Mission accomplished I guess 😒

  5. Too many people cries racism these days. It’s like they’ve got nothing better to do. I’m surprised the African American community hasn’t cried racism over Mr. Game & Watch being black. Which is what I thought this post was about until I read it.

      1. funny enough it wasnt one guy. It as an entire forum tht started this in ResetEra. Even an official member of a site threatened a Twitter user of getting him banned bc he was insensitive; and used an offical source of how they got an audio designer fired for having right wing thoughts, to get their point across to him.

    1. Funny thing is the “African Americans ” are the ones that should be outraged being that they are the real Native Americans / Indigenous people of the Americas, but hey! That’s another lesson I don’t think people are ready for 😧

  6. I don’t look at the world through that lens.

What I do see is it looks like it’s range is nerfed and that sucks. Really, i hate this decision to change game and watch animations. He was animated so lively in 4 and this just strips the character

    1. Really? I am usually critical of some of the choices made for Smash for their character depictions, but these new animations for G&W is one of the best they have done imo. Helps to further flesh out what each move is from and make some nice call backs to the titles. The only other major appearance change I hope to see some day, is an alternate “colorized” Mr. G&W from the official artwork, G&W Panorama series and GameBoy Gallery.

  7. The NPCs are at it again.

Seriously, why do NPCs always find a way to complain about the littlest thing in a video game? I feel like it’s because of the fact Nintendo isn’t bowing down to them and is focused on giving EVERYONE an Entertaining Experience on their platform. I hope Nintendo just ignores them and carries on like they did with Sombrero Mario

  8. The majority of people upset and calling something racist when most of the people it’s supposedly racist toward is people that aren’t even part of that race. Let that sink in for a minute.

    1. I remember a darkskined changestudent came to my school in Norway and got told she had to get offended by “everything” and watch out for racist comments. She hadn’t noticed any and wasn’t used be on such a look-out. Ironically that made her feel different and uncomfortable.

  9. As a long time fan of the classic G&W series, I will be damn pissed if this causes a big enough stink that it gets edited out. Hopefully its to late in development for NoA to be forced to do anything to remove it from the shipped product.

  10. “Progressive first world leftist gets offended at some pointless mundane shit”

In other news. Water is wet and the sky is blue.

  11. I actually likes his videos. I’ve been making YT-videos myself for some years, and I think he actually are putting a good amount of effort in his videos. The studio he’s filming in there was build by him and some others. I think he’s dedicated and sometimes fun, but he can be quite repetitive.

  12. Anybody surprised by SJWs doing SJW-like things? Outrage articles and oppression dollars via patreon is how they pay the bills as a degree in gender studies can’t get you shit in the job market.

  13. I do question why this has been posted as a news article. This is clearly ridiculous and giving it more exposure is almost as bad as whoever came up with this nonsense. All these calls of racism for things that clearly aren’t take away from the real issues and occurrences of it and that is the problem with this kind of thing.

  14. The game it’s based on essentially depicts Indians as savages, but I don’t think people actually believe Indians are savages these days so I don’t think it’s harmful to reference a piece of history. If anything, it should serve as a reminder that we’ve come so far in respecting Indians just as Game and Watch as a character is a reminder of how far gaming has come.
Most players won’t even know the game it’s based on and would just see it as Game and Watch being multicultural as I did when I first saw the article and hadn’t seen the game it referenced.

      1. What xeno said. The cowboys and Indians we imagine are based on a time when Americans invaded Indian land and treated them like savages.

But I think it is good that people are able to say they think of it as fantasy, because that shows things have progressed a lot over time.

I’m not American, Indian or a historian so perhaps I’m not the best person to regard my opinion though.

        1. Thank you for being that guy, skel! I was gonna be that guy a few times but felt “Nah. I should sit this line of comments out as I don’t want to be that guy.” even though it is the truth. Sadly, not all Native American tribes were victims. Especially before Europeans came along since Native Americans, much like Europeans, Asians, Africans, etc, fought amongst themselves and killed members of other tribes.

      2. So what are you saying? That Indians were savages? Yes, in some cases i guess you could say that, but in many other cases we see that they are people. Apparently YOU need to pick up a history book!

        1. In any case, neither of us are saying they are savages but that some of their acts were pretty savage in nature. I mean, what’s the purpose in scalping someone to kill them when you can easily slit their throat? Scalping someone is a slow and painful process and is a pretty savage way to kill someone as they won’t die right away. In fact, some victims of scalping probably survived the initial act and thus had a slow, agonizing death over anywhere from minutes to hours.

    1. Well, there’s also just that some attacked back because they where kicking them out of their land o3o you wouldn’t call French and polish savage for attacking the germans back during the world wars.

  15. I’m white and offended at every other character in smash! They are so white and crackerish it’s offensive and I can’t sleep at night. I’m suing the world!

  16. Game & Watch is old as shit. As someone who works around old as f*ck comic books and collectibles, that shit is super racist 90% of the time. All I have to do is turn left and see “red skins” and “eight ball” and YAH. Also this is a Native person who has a problem with this. I think of ALL people who can judge whats freaking racist to Native people, it’s NATIVE people. Who I’m sure people will dismiss like they do all minorities and turn it into some partisan political thing. Sucks for this person for sure.

All Nintendo has to do remove or change it. Shit, just take off the obvious feather part of the character and BAM fixed. They fixed Jinx and they fixed Wham Bam in the KSSU remake. They can easily change this and problem solved.

Annoying to see this here, knowing it’s a hot topic for gamers to complain about racial criticism (You know, unlike real complaints like the color of Sonic’s eyes or Dante’s new design in a game), just for them clicks.

I’m not even gonna read half the comments here cause half of them stupid as f*ck already.

    1. Unless it’s the majority of Native Americans getting offended by this, there is no need to change it. Who cares what the minority of a minority thinks, anyway? One person offended out of 99 not offended does not warrant a change to the thing that one person is upset by. I don’t remember a swath of angry Mexicans trying to boycott Super Mario Odyssey because they found Mario wearing a sombrero and poncho racist.

And are you sure this person upset is Native American? They could be some white dude claiming to have Native American in his family as there is like 5% of Native American in his DNA, so he thinks him being offended gives him more of a right to be offended. And no. Being 5% Native American does not make you Native American. Unless you got like 30% and actually look Native American, you aren’t Native American.

    1. Because they changed the physiology of a beloved character.
Granted, her breasts have changed size between different games and artstyles. But it’s more of the shape that feels off to me in Ultimate. Speaking as a long time Metroid fan who buys Nintendo consoles mainly for Metroid.

    2. What was wrong with her boobs before Ultimate, though? Do they not think there are white women that are slender but still have big assets? I’m on the side that feels Samus’s boob size change was highly unnecessary.

  17. This reminds me of when some people got offended by Mario’s sombrero and poncho outfit in Super Mario Odyssey. Which is probably the reason why the sombrero and poncho photo on the cover got replaced with the snorkel outfit photo.

  18. Watch there be complaints about Villager only having 2 dark-skinned palette swaps in Smash Ultimate. I wouldn’t be surprised since people nowadays get so bored with their lives that they just find the smallest things to complain about.

    1. So they really cut out Apu? Pfft. Did these people that bitched about Apu being racist also bitch about the other characters based on stereotypes? Where’s the outcry against Groundskeeper Willie!?

  19. Make Nintendo great again. Do not remove the supposed racism in Mr Game and Watch’s forward attack and let the liberals cry until they get tired. Their parents will comfort them and let them snuggle at night. All will be ok.

  20. and i thought the Lady Gaga article was stupid.

if they seriously change that i would never support Nintendo again. What ever happened to people being adults and safe in who they are, this doesnt affect anybody and anyone claiming to be hurt by it just wants to stir up the hate.

how about NOT take part in a disgusting distribution of unworthy news that will only feed anyone wanting to stop something so insignificant.

  21. Dear everyone butthurt over little things ever: please stop forcing your views down other people’s throats. The game you’re criticizing had the character in question 17 years ago who just got updated to reference an over 30-year-old game. Where were you when this first happened?

Stop complaining for the sake of complaining, this is low-key trolling just to prove you want things to go your way while getting no one to like you in the process.

  22. It’s Election Day…
They’re calling this “the utmost important election ever!”
“America is on the brink of self destruction….. blah, blah, blah”
Oh, & let’s throw in how racist the Mr Game & Watch character is for wearing a native American headgear.

    FOH

  23. Pingback: Watch: Kirby goes full GOAT in new 'Super Smash' trailer – Heat

  24. Make no mistake everyone: the old Game & Watch game was definitely racist, and by extension, so is its inclusion in SSBU. However, I don’t think it should be removed from the game. I think it’s better to use this opportunity to practice critical thinking and evaluate the representations seen in games to improve in the future, while avoiding erasing the problems of the past.

      1. No, but wearing the cultural clothing of ANOTHER PERSON’S identity is definitely “immediately deemed racist.” Native American head wear is “their” head wear. It has meaning to them. If someone who is not Native American takes it and profits from it, or takes credit for its founding, or wears it inappropriately, then this person would be deemed racist.

  25. seriously this is like RTU’s better help video. everyone credible shits on them after Memeology 101 exposes them for being a scam. the spotlight is off RTU for once so he sees no one is paying attention to him so he makes a video defending better help simply to start conservancy. if i recall he even had the balls to say he wouldn’t have read the tos anyways even if he had a sponsorship with them. um…correct me if I’m wrong but if you have a sponsorship with a company, isn’t it a good idea to learn as much as you can about them before telling your fans to use the service?

  26. seriously though, love your vids Jim Sterling. I will admit that I don’t watch them as much as I used to but I try to catch them.

  27. I mean… it is definitely racist. It should be removed now, because we live in 2018 where we are more culturally understanding and aware. Doesn’t matter if it pays homage to an old fashioned Game and Watch game (which was similarly racist…)

If you are not of the race that is being represented in a product for sale (including video games), then you cannot profit off of the culture. Nintendo is Japanese and they culturally appropriated Native American culture (the headdress)for purpose of profit. It is blatantly appropriated.

If you disagree, then you either don’t understand, or you “don’t care,” in which case you need to check your understanding and morals, because cultural appropriation is a real problem that all minority communities suffer from.

Heck, the JAPANESE are culturally appropriated themselves… so, they should know better.
