Dr. Serkan Toto: “No doubt in my mind that Nintendo will launch Switch Pro in 2020”

Video game industry site Games Industry has rounded up some notable analysts to get their opinions on what they think the state of the gaming industry will be like this year. One of those interviewed is, Dr. Serkan Toto from Kantan Games, who is adamant that we will see a revised higher specification Nintendo Switch system this year with a $399.99 price tag. Dr. Toto expects it sometime in the summer holidays to combat the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X which are both due this holiday season.

Switch Pro launch – There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Nintendo will launch a “Switch Pro” in 2020, my guess is at $399. More specifically, I predict 4K support, bigger cartridge sizes, and of course beefed-up components. I also think the device will launch after the summer holidays to counter the roll-out of the PS5 and next-gen Xbox later in the year – along with a first-party, system-seller game.

More Microsoft games on the Switch – The love affair between Microsoft and Nintendo is likely to continue, with more big Xbox games landing on the Switch. I am skeptical about xCloud coming to the Nintendo device in 2020, however.

Further rise of subscriptions – I expect Sony to finally roll PlayStation Now and Plus into one price in 2020. Microsoft is also likely to add xCloud to one of their already existing service bundle deals. Next year, Nintendo will also add N64 games to Switch Online. These services mark a major turning point for the business model of video gaming – even though on mobile, I predict Apple Arcade to lose its thunder in 2020 already.

Spectacular game on mobile from Nintendo – At the time of writing, Nintendo still hasn’t announced what comes after Mario Kart Tour for smart devices. The follow-up must be a big name, so I expect another hit franchise from the company to land on mobile in 2020, i.e. a Zelda app or Smash Bros (don’t laugh) co-developed with a new partner. Next year should also see the release of the first Nintendo apps in mainland China.

  1. Smash mobile won’t happen. Maybe a companion app of some sort. I also don’t think Switch 4K. But a pro console could happen.

  2. Switch Pro launch in 2020 => no doubt in my mind this will definitely not happen
Switch Pro with 4K => will never happen.
More Microsoft games on the Switch => maybe don’t care that much.
Nintendo will also add N64 games to Switch Online => would be nice, but I don’t get my hopes up. (NERD could no doubt make a nice emulator though)
Spectacular game on mobile from Nintendo => Zelda Mobile would be nice, controls could be something like Phanthom Hourglass, maybe even with a small controller peripheral.

    1. Regarding Zelda mobile, it’s interesting to think about possible gameplay. They could do something similar to Link’s Awakening on Switch, with the customized dungeons mechanics. Otherwise, I’d suspect them to have a sort of “main campaign” of levels of mini dungeons and puzzle challenges. They could fit in all sorts of gear from old Zelda games, and make upgrades cost…rupees, I guess, that you’d get for real money.

Or they’d just use the Zelda name and create something entirely new. I can easily see them launching a Zelda mobile this year, though.

  3. …who?
I wish we’d stop getting articles of randoms trying to predict one of the most unpredictable names in the industry

  4. I think no announcement for a Switch pro would be made until they know the cost of the PS5 and X because how much cheaper it is than those will be important.

  5. Mmm a very good statement there. My thoughts tells me that the pro is gonna be a bit stronger and powerful like the original Nintendo Switch. But, I’m still hoping Nintendo will continue to make games on the original Nintendo Switch still.

I don’t think the pro will be 4K like XB1. It will cost thousands plus millions to import them in the hardware and there future systems.

  6. Great now I got to fork over $400 to play Metroid, Pikmin 4, Mario Kart 9 and Luigi’s Mansion 4. This is exactly what I didn’t want. If they thought about power at the time Switch was in R&D then we wouldnt have to buy an updated Switch.

  7. It would make sense to release a Pro Switch this year, but not as beefed up as this guy is talking about. Price will not be $399. More like $299 and a decrease in price for the base Switch which will be 3 years old come March and still sells at original price.

  8. $400? No. The highest they’d probably go is $350, with the normal Switch getting a $50 or so price drop.
4K? Absolutely not. It’s still a portable console.
This year? Maybe, but I’m not counting on it.
    It’s impossible to predict Nintendo.

    1. The thing you said “maybe” to is probably the least likely of the three things to happen.

4K more than likely, 400 (if a “PRO” and muscling up significantly) also likely since the competition will be leveled and it will still be the cheapest new console.

  9. Whoa, whoa, whoa! 4K Switch? *snickers* He should have stopped at his prediction of a Switch Pro release. But a Switch Pro with 4K? lol Unless he actually knows something we don’t, highly doubtful a Switch Pro is gonna be THAT powerful. Unless they ditch the portable aspect & make the Switch Pro solely for TV use like how the Switch Lite is solely for portable use.

    1. It only states 4K “support”. Which means it could be related to UI and NES games for example. I won’t believe there will be 4K 3D games on Switch in a while (read never).

    1. How so? Series X is just a name. It’s just like how all of Nintendo consoles are called “Nintendo” and then a “name” or how Sonys consoles are all called “PlayStation” and then a “number or name.” I get it that it’s easy to figure out what’s newer based on numbers, but it’s not so hard to understand which one is the newest one. If you’re a gamer, you’ll know. The only ones that’ll be confuse are the casuals.

      1. It’s from their point of view I see it from. Too me it sounds like the original Xbox’s name, with a name under that isn’t actually its name. And what’s the other models going to be named? Series S? Sounds confusing for consumers if you ask me. But maybe I’m just stupid or something.
I mean, people thought the Wii U was a Wii Add-on. I get that MS want a family of system, but… yeah.

        1. One of the YouTubers I follow suggested the possibility that the design is meant to let you open up the system & switch out a CPU for a stronger one down the road instead of releasing a new Xbox. That would explain the Series X part of the name. After all, didn’t they only show 1 image of the Xbox Series X & that was from one angle? If so, another angle could have revealed an opening in the back of the system so they only showed the one angle for now.

          1. The CPU is a 8 core/16 threads Ryzen CPU. It will do for a console for quite some time. But a interesting view. Spencer have said the “model” name is so they can release multiple models though.

        2. Trust me, im with you. The casual market (the biggest for all consoles) will have a hard time figuring out which is which. But it looks like Microsoft is trying to “reboot” the Xbox brand to what it should’ve been from the start, akin to Nintendo’s way of naming their consoles, and although it’s going to cause confusion, it’s better late than never.

My girl just recently saw my Wii U and she also though it was an add on. She was wondering why her Wii didn’t come with one back when she had one. I had a great time explaining it all lol.

I can see MS having a hard time with their new naming convention, but I don’t understand why people are so worried. MS must really believe I’m their marketing and PR team to want to go through with this whole naming fiasco again. It just seems odd that the majority of the people that keep bring this up (and I mean Gamespot, Kotaku, GI & IGN) are those that don’t even plan on getting it. It’ll be my first next console, and I can honestly say, that the name doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

          1. The name is fine in my opinion. The “series” is kind of lame, but it isn’t really a part of the name. Xbox is fitting really, because MS just want you to be a part if the “Xbox family” no matter which device you’re on.
But in this transition periode from Xbox One to Xbox, just calling it “Xbox” will probably confuse some parents etc and end up buying a Xbox One S or something. But when all the Xbones are gone and only XboxSeX are left, the naming won’t matter that much I guess. Only thing is if the general consumer thinks “Xbox” still is Xbone; then they won’t fly of the selves. Time will tell though.

I’m also hyped for Xbox SeX. Too bad Halo Infinite will be on even Xbone :/ It will keep it back a fair amount.

  10. Highly doubt it. Nintendo did a “Pro” type model for the DS and 3DS and they weren’t supported all that much. The N3DS is great, but besides faster load times for some games, it only has a handful of exclusive titles that take advantage of the sytem’s power. The DSi only really had extra features in some games involving the camera and the DSi Ware, which wasn’t that vast of a collection of games. I think we’ll see next generation for Nintendo long before a Pro model.

  11. This guy got it all wrong. He’s calling it a Switch Pro when he is actually speculating about the successor to Switch which I doubt we will see before 2022.

Also, screw 4K. No one asked for it. It’s just some overrated buzzword where the scale up he the game but in reality very few games on PS4 have true 4K, let alone Hollywood movies that really take advantage of the resolution.

  12. Ugh! If it DOES release this year, there’s no way I can get it (especially if it’s a crazy $400). At least, not right away. Because I have to save for the PS5 this year. But it won’t be worth buying unless there’s some big upgrades and features. And I’m not talking about stupid apps like Netflix etc. I’ll Never understand the appeal of that. I can’t believe that the Switch doesn’t even have a basic internet browser by now. Nintendo is always behind time compared to the competition. A browser is the only internet related feature I want or care about. And I gave up long ago about custom soundtracks. Nintendo will forever remain behind times as far as that goes. Which there’s no excuse for, because custom soundtracks could easily work through a flash drive. Doesn’t need a hard drive for that.

  13. 2022

    Bank on it

4K compliant by then, but rarely used, just “possible”

Not sure about the mobile part. It will be a big name because that drives downloads, but it has to make sense. Mario Kart made a lot of sense, so did Mario Jump. Zelda? Maybe. But how I am not sure.

  15. I’ve said it before and I say it again: Switch Pro is NEVER going to happen! There might come a Switch Deluxe with bigger screen, bigger battery and more storage. But it will play the same games. Switch pro with better performance will not happen because it will create a split games catalogue and only confuse people. Noone can stop shitty developers from creating games that only run fine on Switch Pro but run at 5fps on regular Switch. And making “For Switch Pro only” game boxes is anti-consumer. Nintendo made 2 or 3 exlusive games for the NEW 3DS, but they definitely don’t want that with the Switch.
