GameStop cancels midnight release for both Animal Crossing and Doom Eternal

Kotaku is reporting that US retail chain GameStop is cancelling the midnight release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Doom Eternal. Both games are due to be released on Friday. The company shared the news via an internal memo to employees which has been published online by Kotaku.

“Until further notice, late night launch events are suspended. To maintain the health and safety of our guests and associates, it is best that we avoid situations where large numbers of guests are gathered indoors or standing in line.”

  1. “It is best that we avoid situations where large numbers of guests are gathered indoors or standing in line.”

Ok so… the large line of indoor guests happens the next morning instead of at midnight. We all know coronavirus sleeps during the day so we can catch it off guard, good call GameStop.

    1. Employees needing to work late and potentially missing out on regular sleep can weaken their immune system. People who line up in the morning put themselves at risk by choice. At least this statement discourages the crowd gathering and is morally correct by their employees who now will work regular hours and not disrupt their sleep schedules. People are dying as this thing spreads. Any actions they can take, even small ones, are for the best.

  2. Big deal. I never saw the point of the midnight launches anyway. I mean, people can wait until the actual day. Only impatient little kids would throw a fit over that. I always go late in the afternoon. But, I don’t see how cancelling the midnight launch is keeping people safe from the coronavirus. They’ll just get the virus in the day time instead. I’m hoping I can quickly get in and out that day. Better not be a line.

    1. It’s discouraging a social gathering. Adjusting store hours for the launch is essentially creating an event and inviting people to all come in at the same time. This way there is no “event” per say and no encouraging of people to come, it’s just normal business hours. People might still line up in the morning for sure, but that’s by their own volition and at their own risk.

  3. *chuckles* Til the government forces martial law, you aren’t gonna stop people from camping out. Now these people can sleep comfortably in their beds that night & then start camping out at 6am the next morning.

    1. It’s too bad. Likely the Final Fantasy VII Remake’s midnight release will also be cancelled. I’ve been waiting for over a decade on that game. Would have been fun. Oh well..

  4. I don’t care if it has a midnight release or not, as long as I can grab Persona 5 Royal at some point on release day (March 31st if anyone isn’t following it).
