Japan: Nintendo Switch No.1 in 2021 selling over 5 million units & Monster Hunter Rise best-selling software

The Nintendo Switch family of systems have proved to be a big success in Japan and last year 5.3 million units were sold over the period of 28th December, 2020 and 19th December, 2021. Games Industry is reporting that the Nintendo Switch family of systems shifted five times the amount of of units as all other consoles combined, with sales of PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and the Nintendo 3DS selling a total of  1.1 million units. However, it should be noted that the latest consoles from Sony and Microsoft are supply constrained globally.

Japanese hardware sales in 2021:

  • Nintendo Switch family of systems: 5.3 million
  • PlayStation 5: 942,798 units 
  • Xbox Series X|S: 5,598
  • PlayStation 4: 103,786.
  • Nintendo 3DS: 28,224 units

  1. No news here, Switch is still selling like crazy all over the world. Absolutely incredible how they have pushed this console with their marketing. They really struck gold. And I am loving it. Well deserved.

    I feel so bad for MS when it comes to the sales in Japan. They offer quite a lot of great games but they just don’t seem to appeal to the people there.

    Considering the console shortages it’s impressive that Sony managed almost a million units. Could have been more if they hadn’t focused on the western markets.
