By now, you’re more than likely aware of the news that GoldenEye 007 would be added to the Nintendo 64 retro library that is currently available on Nintendo Switch Online. However, thanks to remarks by Rare studio head Craig Duncan, we now know more info on how this happened.
According to Duncan, they originally tried to make GoldenEye’s return happen in 2015, when they were developing Rare Replay. Unfortunately, “things involving licenses and published games just have complexity”. Despite the setback, Duncan says that “there were lots of conversations, lots of conversations with our friends at Nintendo, the folks at MGM, the folks at Xbox, and we just kept talking until we made it happen”.
MGM are more than likely the obstacle. Also I’m sure the conversation would be this:
Rare & Nintendo: can we get Goldeneye?
MGM: no.
Rare & Nintendo: can we Goldeneye now?
MGM: still no.
Rare & Nintendo: can we get Goldeneye now, pretty please?
MGM: ok, fine.
I didn’t think that they would be able to pull this off because of the licensing issues. But it gives me a lot of hope for Banjo-Tooie and DK64.
Yea but donkey Kong is all of Nintendo’s banjo isn’t and that’s on the SO. I just think Nintendo has plans for DK and when they’re ready they’re going to unleash all things DK I even think didn’t Kong racing will turn up soon
DK64 was already made available for Wii U virtual console, back in like 2015 I think. Since it’s already been brought back once, I think Nintendo can do it again for NSO at any time they want.

Lmk when it’s dropping on PS or something native PC and I’ll care. Till then I’ll continue playing the remaster given out for free that was finished by the community.
And yet, it’s still not the vastly improved remake that was going to be released for the 360 and leaked earlier this year that fans have been waiting to officially play. It’s just the N64 ROM.
I’m extremely extatic to see goldeneye release on the switch and Xbox, now I have my fingers crossed for one more game, Rare’s Diddy Kong Racing! Please Rare, make it happen!
