US: Best-selling Wii U games of all-time

The Wii U had some fantastic games but that alone did not transpire into good sales for Nintendo’s ill-fated home console. We now know the top ten best-selling Wii U games in the United States from data supplied from video games sales tracker the NPD Group. Super Smash Bros Wii U is unsurprisingly the No.1 game and Mario Kart 8 is at No.2 (the Switch version is the best-selling Nintendo Switch game since the system launched in 2017) and six out of the top ten Wii U best-sellers are already available on the Nintendo Switch. Here’s the top ten best-selling Wii U games in the United States:

  1. Super Smash Bros Wii U
  2. Mario Kart 8
  3. Super Mario Maker
  4. Super Mario 3D World
  5. Splatoon
  6. New Super Mario Bros U
  7. Mario Party 10
  8. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  9. Pokken Tournament
  10. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

  1. I’m somewhat surprised that BotW has that high on the list. I understand not everyone had Switch day one, but it was very popular from the start, and it was the premier launch title for Switch.

    1. If I had to guess, maybe people who weren’t able to get a Switch at launch, but wanted to play BOTW launch day, just got it for the Wii U and maybe got the Switch version later?

    2. It could also be from those who reserved it after it was announced since it was announced for Wii U long before NX (later Switch) was revealed.

      1. Who said I’ve played everything and i haven’t played BotW because i usually play PlayStation and haven’t even had a Switch that long. But really, what gave you the impression I’ve played everything? Because i reply on different topics, apparently that means I’ve played every game that i post on topics about.

        1. I Just read alot about games and watch YouTube videos, Just because i post about games doesn’t necessarily mean I’ve played every game that i post about. It’s more to being a gamer then Just playing games, and if I’ve got something to say about a game on a topic then … I’ll say it, whatever gave you the impression I’ve played every game is beyond me.

          1. I’ve just seen you comment about playing a lot of different games. I was more emphasizing the variety of games you play vs the quantity.

            1. Yeah, but I’ve never played every game nor claimed that i have. Prior to getting a Switch i haven’t played a Nintendo system since the Gamecube. I only got a Switch because of Disgaea 6 and Monster Hunter Rise because they was exclusive Switch titles. Now that Disgaea 6 released on PlayStation and Monster Hunter Rise is releasing on January 20th they aren’t exclusive titles anymore.

              1. Ok. I meant no offense. I think the best games are the ones we enjoy so I wasn’t trying to suggest you play this game or not play that game or anything like that. It just seemed unusual that you haven’t played BOTW but now it doesn’t seem unusual after your reply

  2. The game that officially brought Mario and Mega Man together on tv screen is the best selling Wii U game, as it should be.

    1. Seeing Tropical Freeze make top ten should had caused thr developers to make a sequel for the Switch instead of a Deluxe version. The Wii U version and Switch version are more than 5 years apart? So what’s the excuse why they didn’t make a new Donkey Kong game for the Switch? They made a new Yoshi for the Switch and they are less than 4 years apart.

  3. Crazy thing about the actual sales numbers. If you add up the top 10, they’re actually higher than the top 10 of the GameCube! Should show how much first party Nintendo games sell these ill fated systems since GameCube and Wii U were both considered failures during their lifespans (if you don’t believe it, look it up, GameCube had its production stopped shortly after launch due to excess unsold systems).

    1. Insane that it’ll likely end up being a decade since DK got a brand-new game (DKC:TF was in 2014 on Wii U). Thank God we got a Switch version in 2018. I believe people forget it was confirmed Nintendo leaks false games to throw fans off. I truly believe DK Switch was one of these fake rumors, or it got cancelled and restarted like Pikmin 4. It almost seems like they want to see if putting DK in movies and theme parks can drum up interest in a new game first before actually making it. Yoshi and Kirby definitely get treated better. Hell, even Metroid gets treated better now.
