Rumour: Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings remake coming from Bandai Namco & Monolith Soft

A juicy new rumour seems to be doing the rounds, which if true, could be incredibly exciting and fairly surprising at the same time. Exputer is reporting from their sources that Bandai Namco and Xenoblade Chronicles developer Monolith Soft have been working together to produce a remake of the GameCube game Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean to the Nintendo Switch with Nintendo overseeing the project. We have already heard that Bandai Namco is working on a Nintendo game from one of their job listings on their official website. Bandai Namco also trademarked the game back in the summer of 2021 here in Europe. As always this news is clearly marked as a rumour at present and no official announcement has been made by any of the studios mentioned.

“Now, however, sources have confirmed that the first Baten Kaitos game is getting a remake exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. eXputer has seen graphical evidence of the title under development but is unable to share any of it publicly at this moment in time.”

“Sources have also said that the release date for this remake is planned to be sometime in the summer of 2023 and that a reveal is possible during this year’s E3.”

“Moreover, the remake is in the works by the game’s original developer Monolith Studio— a Nintendo-owned company — right alongside Bandai Namco. Additionally, Nintendo is involved in the new remake and will work with the two developers to oversee the title’s development.”

  1. I’ll believe it when I see it from the horse’s mouth. Don’t give us hope. Remember when these rumors said Mother 3 was finally being localized? Good times.

    1. with a niche few who know about the game today, do you think newcomers would buy a 3rd game if they made a direct sequel? The budget for a 3rd game for a very niche series almost 20 years old wouldn’t even be considered let alone the profit/revenue to cover the budget lol

      1. And I should know just how niche they were even back when the games first released in 2003 & ’06 respectively. I use to have Kalas & Sagi as aliases (and role play character names) back in late ’05-’11 and it was once in a blue moon that I’d get a reaction of someone recognizing those names as being from the Baten Kaitos games. (Fun fact. I later got reminded that Kalas was also used as a name for a villain in the Highlander tv series who caused Duncan a shitload of problems. I had totally forgotten about that asshole.)

  2. I too would rather have a third game, also Origins is the superior game of the two by far, so if ne is to be remade I’d rather it be that one.

    1. Oh plz be true! If a remake does better than the original, we could get Origins remade, & if that one does just as good, then we can talk about a 3rd game! If Nintendo could get Xenosaga & Xenogears from Bandai Namco & Sony, let those get remakes, then we would have a lot of games from Monolith Soft on Switch. A section in the eShop could be called the Monolith Series.

  3. Not another remake!!! Make a new game! It’s like an admission that the past was better than the present or the future. It’s because today they have no creativity, spark or vision.

    1. Not really. Remakes were very numerous during the 90s and early 00s which is often touted as the golden age of gaming. A remake would make it more accessible to people who never grew up with the system, and honestly more palatable to those who think the in-game models look like potatoes. If you wanna buy the games on original hardware you’re going to have to shell out $300, and that is not counting whether or not you have a Wii or GameCube already on hand. As someone who owns Eternal Wings and Origins, I think a remake or port of these two games is completely justified before we get a third version.

    2. Of course the past was better. Is there any doubt about that yet? Each generation is worse than the previous one, as long as the “hurr graphics and live service” crap continues.

    1. Yeah, Origins never saw an official European release. You either have to jailbreak your console and shell out around $180 for a copy of Origins, or pirate it if we never get a remake of it.

  4. I remember playing one of these on my Gamecube I liked the card base battle and if you had data from one you would get extra cards if you started playing the new game.

  5. Then keep playing the same games over and over. Again if that’s what you want rather than a new game, then its either because the the old games are better or they can’t make a quality new game. Endless remakes every generation sucks. Each gen should have it’s own.

    1. You have new games coming out every year to enjoy, a few remakes is not gonna destroy you or the industry lol you act as if there’s no new games at all. Go and play the new games and leave the remakes for the rest of us who want to play it on modern consoles and not want to pirate the game or shell out $200+ for an old console and rare game.

  6. I like how people are complaining about a remake, first of all no one bought the original and second, there is absolutely no rerelease on other Nintendo platforms so of course a remake is needed. I don’t believe in rumors and i do want this but i ain’t believing it until the horse’s mouth says otherwise.

    1. People are going to complain whenever FE PoR gets a port or remaster too despite the original being crazy expensive and the series having no shortage of new installments. It’s all so tiresome.

            1. I think it’s a form of it, because if you didn’t buy it you’d probably just be indifferent towards it. The only reason why I keep it around is because there’s a chance the prices will skyrocket as it ages and becomes a collector’s item, then I’ll be able to make a nice profit.

  7. Like I said, enjoy playing it over and over and over because you won’t get any original ones ever. Why should they make new games if you love the old ones so much?
I have the originals. I’m not poor. I want a new one now.

    1. That’s a good way to get the series to die for good. Do you expect people to play a story driven game that’s connected to the stories of the previous two titles that they’ve never played and not have some sort of problem with it? People complain about Kingdom Hearts 3 even when the collections made it accessible to them. We’re not talking about the same fans playing it again, we’re talking about a new generation of gamers experiencing it and revitalizing the series. You’re either a troll or you’re not comprehending what I’m saying.

  8. Oh please please please let this be true!!! It’s one of my all time favorite games and I would be so ecstatic to see the series revived. If it ever is remade, I hope they stay true to the gorgeous soundtrack and artsy look and feel.

  9. You are obviously the troll wanting people to have to play the old games instead of getting new ones. I dont care what your opinion is because I didnt ask for it. You arent comprehending what I’m saying troll. I want a NEW Baten Kaitos because I’ve played the old ones. And if people havent, then the series is already dead so start again with a new game. You are obtuse.

    1. 1 and 2 were niche to begin with, and it being old only adds to the problem. A third title isn’t likely to sell well if it remains niche, and the companies wouldn’t be likely to make a 4th game if the third game flops. How is that obtuse?

    2. The series IS already dead. There hasn’t been a BK game since 2006. I don’t see how it can get any more dead than that. A remake would bring it back to life just as much as a new game would. You act like a brand new BK game is the only thing you’ll have to play. You said it yourself: you’re not poor, so go buy & play something else to tide you over til then. If there ever is a then, that is. This comment section is for an article about a rumor, after all. And even if they are working on a remake or even a new game, you’ll still have to wait & can’t have it now. Development doesn’t happen overnight. …wait. Grunty, is that you!? 😆

  10. And if you think a new game cant stand on its own it is because of my original statement. It’s like an admission that the past was better than the present or the future. It’s because today they have no creativity, spark or vision.

  11. (Reposting because it wasn’t meant to be a reply to another’s comment.)

  12. Well, Infinite, we agree the series is dead. I would rather not wait for this remake foolishness to happen before I get a new game that can revive it.. Where you and Shiny fall short is in thinking that the old games need to be repeated for the generations that missed out. Shiny admits that the old games look like potatoes so a new game would eliminate that. But if the creators of a new game in a dead series were to reinvent it by incorporating the elements of the original stories, problem solved. But its easier to not be creative. If Shiny wrote it you could bet that you’d find yourself in some sort of a Kingdom Hearts 3 quagmire. If you want the original story, not something completely new, then make a new game that starts with a synopsis of the old. Done. easy. And we all get to play something completely new and modern.

  13. So much better than what’s already been over yet again. The real niche is the old gamer that worships a dead IP and yet insists you experience the same potato graphics and story they did. Sucks it can’t be bettered. Gotta agree no matter what kind of fanboy you might be, you want another in the series. Im not willing to wait for another port to take over the time and resources that could be used for a better game in the IP if there were capable enough creators.

  14. This wouldn’t be a port it would be a remake, presumably, based on this rumor which may not even be true.

If it is true, it wouldn’t be merely a port, I think even Monolith realizes how dated this game is by this point. However, I do agree with the others, even though a new one would be preferable, no company in their right mind will risk losing that kind of money if there is no interest, and because this franchise reached such a low number of people originally; this remake would be to test the waters so to speak, and gauge if it’s even worth reviving the IP. It wouldn’t be a bad idea, it could create a renewed interest in this franchise and get it out there into more hands. This series is so good it deserves to be be discovered by all the people who missed it or have never even heard about it, but they need it in their lives rather the realize that or not.

That said, I really do hope if they are remaking the game that they will dump all the existing voice acting and redo it with a better cast, because the voice acting that exists in the original GameCube copy of Eternal wings is among the worse I have ever experienced in a game. If anything is begging to be updated the most, it’s that. Well that and tying it in better to origins, because it always annoyed me that it seemed so obvious that the two games were never planned together and origins just kind of happened later as an afterthought.

I played Origins first even though it was the newer game, because I didn’t even know Eternal wings existed at the time. So you can imagine my surprise when I find out there is a game that takes place 20 years later in the same world only to find that the person who literally saved the world was never mentioned even one time by anyone, not even in vague reference unless you want to go with the ‘well they died sometime between the two games’ thing, which is implied heavily.

It’s dumb though, because a bunch of the leaders are the same in both games and a couple were directly saved by Sagi on top of having all their countries saved by him. Realistically they would have erected statues in his honor or something, I mean they owe this man everything at that point; he was the only reason they still had countries to rule over or even their lives for that matter. Another thing that bothered me is that Hassaleh doesn’t exist in Eternal Wings, which has some very dark implications as to the fate of Sagi’s mother and all the orphans. I had to assume that the events of Origins caused it to fall from the sky between the games, which cheapens the story of Origins a lot because it means everything Sagi worked for, was for nothing basically. It’s even less comforting to find that the mountain range that was sheered of is in fact in the game, but not the rest of the island which only lends credence to the idea that Hassaleh suffered a terrible fate.

They need to fix that; they need to make the remake with Origins in mind this time so they can properly tie everything in, instead of that bullshit everyone forgot or Sagi somehow became taboo and so hated at some point that everyone stopped talking about him; which is how the current game makes you feel when you play it. Also I don’t care that he’s supposed to have died between the games, no one would have forgotten him. That should also be a story line in and of itself honestly. You can’t just casually kill off the main characters between games and expect no one to notice. Also Guillo needed to make an appearance they should definitely add it in somewhere. There is an opportunity to flesh it out and make it into a better game. They should also make the battle system like the one in Origins and ditch the one in Eternal Wings, because it was objectively worse. Making a separate deck for everyone and having battle magnus spoil were bad ideas. Origins gameplay was better in every way; the shared deck was a much cleaner format and the combos were a lot more fun.

  15. I hope this is more then just a rumor and ends up being true, don’t worry i won’t make an incoherent post like a diaper baby fanboy rambling on that no one will read anyhow. I won’t type an incoherent wall of text that no one will read anyhow, just saying i hope this is more then just a rumor and ends up being true.

    1. Rude; I hope this post wasn’t directed at me, because my post was neither incoherent( unless you lack reading comprehension), rambling (I thought I made good points), or a wall of text (I broke that up into proper paragraphs). Maybe next time you will read what I put thought into writing instead of just insulting me, and I hope others will do the right thing and actually read what I wrote before commenting. Also I am a fan (note; fan, not fangirl as implied) of the series and would love to discuss these games with my fellow fans; you are clearly not one, so you need not apply.
