US: Super Mario Bros. Movie has best second weekend ever for animated movie with $87M

Nintendo and Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie momentum shows no sign of slowing down as recent stats from North American box-office shows that the beautifully animated movie had the best second weekend ever for an animated movie at the domestic box office with $87M, beating Disney’s highly popular Frozen 2 movie. Again, these are just domestic figures, and not worldwide, and it just goes to show the phenomenal power of the Mario franchise.

    1. Financial success means little to nothing about the quality as a movie. It’s a decent movie and the critical concensus makes sense to me. Even decent movies can be enjoyable, it’s just a little flat and the use of random pop songs was distracting to me. Overall a generic kids film with a Mario skin. Still enjoyed it though and the fact that it IS Mario lifts it, but without the constant references it obviously wouldn’t have been nearly as fun. The financial success though, it’s Mario, go figure.

  1. Good now use the money to pay hire more software developers to make more sequels for other franchises besides Zelda and Mario games. And aim to cut the years from 15 to 7 years.
