Digital Foundry: Games need update to use Switch 2 Docked VRR, only Welcome Tour supports it

Those of you lucky enough to own a VRR enabled TV set will most likely have updated the Nintendo Switch 2 console and dock to test out games to see if any benefit from VRR. However, you’ll have been out of luck as Digital Foundry’s John Linneman has said that Nintendo Switch 2 games will need to have an update to enable VRR when played docked. Interestingly, the only game which supports it at present is the informative, Welcome Tour.

Tested Switch 2 VRRGames need to be patched, only Welcome Tour supports it nowIt supports full LFC in 120hz modeIn 60hz mode, it supports between 40-60hz like Xbox which is better than PS5's 48-60hz supportThankfully with the internal screen being VRR, most games should have it going forward

One annoying quirk – it forces VRR on at all times when enabled in the menu even when the software can't support it. As a heavy user of black frame insertion, this means you have to go into display settings and disable it most of the time unless the specific game you're playing needs it.
