Nintendo decides to change early Mario character’s name in Japan

Nintendo has recently announced on Twitter that they have finally decided to implement a name change of a character in the early Nintendo Entertainment System game, Wrecking Crew. The character named Blackie will be known by that name no longer in Japan and will be called Spike to fall in line with the western name of the very same character. Blackie will also be called Spike when The Super Mario Bros. Movie launches in Japan on Friday, 28th April.

The name of the character “Blackie,” which appears in “Wrecking Crew” and other games for the Family Computer, will be changed to “Spike,” the same name used in the United States and Europe. The name in “The Super Mario Brothers Movie,” which will be released on April 28, 2023, will be “Spike” as well.

  1. Blackie huh? I can see why they would want to change it. Still, this is a bit of Nintendo history I wasn’t aware of. Not much I haven’t heard about in articles and videos I’ve digested over the last 15+ years.

  2. cuz ‘black’ only means race when in reality its not a race nor ethnical background. fun fact it means lack of color, darkness and death. why do you think Goku Black got his name? definitely not cuz he’s African which there is no such thing in Saiyans unless the child is Saiyan/Human hybrid. also to me Blacke sounds like a nickname for Blackbeard.

  3. Thing is, Blackie is an actual surname. I understand the thought process behind this, but it doesn’t make this any less asinine. This reminds me of when the YouTuber Rob Gavagan legally changed his name because there was a lot of ignorance around his old surname, Dyke.

  4. The dumb thing about this is that it’s an actual name. Just because it may sound like a slur, it doesn’t mean it is. There have been people who had to change their legal names because they were victims of ignorance, and it’s better than any other forms of prejudice.

  5. Aside from the interesting name change in Japan could we all just agree that spike has always been a fitting name for him, it’s weird how people get offended over thing aren’t meant to be offensive.

    1. What are you really trying to say? 🧐.
      Nintendo deemed it offensive, we would have never known had it not been for this change. In a civilized world this name would never have been offensive. Yet due to a certain small click of clans with bedsheets over their heads; here we are. Kudos to Nintendo for doing the right thing.

      F=ma.

      1. It’s a Scottish name, and it’s often used for people who have dark eyes. It’s a derivative of the names Blakie and Blake, would you take issue with those names as well?

      2. Lol I’m just saying that spike has always been a better name for him anyways, I’m on the neutral aspect I think it would be pretty dumb to get offended at this aspect just a simple name change

  6. why not just get rid of the mention of the color black all together and just refer it as ” the lack of color color”/s

    1. All I see are two groups of people getting mad over something that doesn’t matter. One getting mad over the previous name and another getting mad over the change of name. Just don’t be mad
