Furukawa admits Nintendo holiday 2022 sales were disappointing and Switch sales slowing quicker than expected

Nintendo president, Shuntaro Furukawa, has informed investors that the Kyoto-based company believes that it will be very difficult sustaining Nintendo Switch sales momentum as the video game system goes into its seventh year on the market. Sales for the Nintendo Switch family of consoles are slowing down more quickly than the company had initially anticipated and there’s no plans right now for a successor to launch anytime soon. Mr. Furukawa admits that the company’s goal of selling 15 million unit this fiscal year is a bit of stretch and that the 2022 holiday season was disappointing for the company. Nintendo is not expected to release a successor to Nintendo Switch for at least another year.

    1. Pokemon is the biggest brand in the world (official list with brands) so what do you mean no holiday games?

Don’t bother trying with logic and common sense with this 1, they will only believe what they want to. Believe me, I’ve tried.

  1. I haven’t bought an Indie game in four years and Nintendo and other big companies games are scarce for years now, Iam kind of happy the sales are slowing maybe they will release more big games.

  2. I wonder if them expecting switch not to get sales over 15 million means something new is on the horizons, I mean usually console life span is 6 years max at most.

    1. Yes that is very true honestly. I hate to say that Nintendo still has no plans to reveal it quite just yet possibly finishing preparation for the next machine.

  3. great, their trying to milk the lifespan of the switch. it was due for a new console 1-2 years ago. i hope sales get worse and worse because i guarantee they have the switch 2 ready to launch and it will most likely be underspec’d once again.

Needless to say, im a bit disappointed with their decision to delay the upgraded console purely for greed. We had been hearing about a switch pro for years and then they go and release the oled model with same specs when they could have released an upgraded model with a newer chip but it woud have affected the huge profit margins they already have.

    1. i’m not buying another Nintendo console until they make a real console that can support all the big triple A titles out there. That said the Pro wasn’t released because of Corona and the Chip shortage and they made the right choice there otherwise they would have had the same issue as the Ps5 and Xbox.

    2. I wuldn’t say “purely” for greed, but a factor does play into how the PS5 and XSeries hav been struggling with hardware and software sales expectations compared to last gen. Due to global inflation, covid and the issues with China at the time.
Then u hav certain shortages in chips as well as horrible market expectations from GPU and general hardware manufacturing, etc.

They’re waiting longer b4 releasing next gen due to the current economic and market climate, since if they decided to announce it now; Then they will end up a more bigger slump in sales in hardware and software for Switch, and a struggling growing market to build up a base of consumers with the next gen system.

  4. I don’t really understand this. Switch is quite an old system at this point. It hasn’t had any major price drops. For the holiday, the big game was Pokemon, and that DID sell phenomenally well, especially for a game that got such a mixed critical reception. There is absolutely no reason the have expected Switch to perform better than it did at this point; if the sales did not meet Nintendo’s expectations, maybe they need to be more realistic.

I personally don’t really care whether they put out a new system, because I only really play first-party games and I’m sure Nintendo can continue to do amazing things with this hardware. However, it’s unrealistic to think console sales can stay high without either a price drop or a new model. I would not expect Nintendo to drop the price if they didn’t have to, but maybe now is the right time.

I think price drops on all the models could boost sales; it would encourage people to 1). buy a second console if they have multiple children so they don’t have to share; 2). buy a Switch Lite if they want something optimized for handheld play on top of their original Switch that they already own; or 3). upgrade to a SwOLED, which they may not be able to justify at the current price point. Buying a second Switch is very much a luxury purchase, and dropping the price makes this easier to justify. If they aren’t planning on releasing new hardware and they want to maintain sales, this is the obvious move.

I like how everyone and their mom talk about how the Switch should have ended a few years ago yet forget that the PS2 went on for 13yrs and no one said anything about Sony needing to move on from it and that it’s very underpowered compared to GCN and OG XB.🤦‍♂️

Where you getting 13 years from?

      1. PS2 wasn’t discontinued until 2013. There was even a FIFA and Final Fantasy game released that last year.

I assume that’s where the person got 13 years from.

      2. I was about to say that it’s debatable whether you want to say a console’s life ends when it’s successor releases or not… but I was surprised to see that PS2 still sold over 40 million units AFTER the release of the PS3.

The thing is; It’s abit of a flawed comparison as well because the Playstation has always, especially in those times, been heavily based on 3rd Party Developers so really the only time the console “ends” is when the final 3rd Party developer decides to call it a day. Meanwhile, Nintendo has always had a heavy hand in making games for their own systems. Yes Sony does have some hand in making games but I think we can agree they have nowhere near as much of a hand in it as Nintendo does with their systems.

Another thing people often overlook with Sony is they have always applied a model of very slowly phasing out the old system while bringing in the new, this is typically why Playstation consoles don’t really come out guns blazing from day 1, they treat it like a long game and slowly transition into the new one. Nintendo, on the other hand, pretty much abandon ship right when the new system drops. Even the Nintendo 3DS, 1 of Nintendo’s biggest hitters, was given out a few more titles after the Nintendo Switch dropped and by the time the hybrid was 1 year old, that handheld was point-blank done.

  6. Nintendo has really been laying off of the Switch, for some reason. With no successor coming soon, it makes you wonder what they are working on???
