The Super Mario Bros.Movie has proven to be an absolute juggernaut of a film and has easily exceeded Nintendo and Illuminations initial expectations, securing the record of second biggest animated movie of all-time just behind Disney’s, Frozen 2. Today, Chris Pratt, the new voice behind Mario, shared the news that a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be announced “soon” once the writers strike has concluded. Pratt went on to say that they are all extremely grateful of the support they have received from the movie and says that it’s “really shocking to me how successful that movie has been.”

“One thing Pratt doesn’t intend to leave alone is the Mario universe, after The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a smash hit. In fact, Pratt teased that news about a sequel to the film should be coming “soon.”

“We’re in the midst of this writers’ strike, and so everything has been paused and [put] on hold for the right reasons,” he said. “I really do support the WGA and our writers. When the negotiations have been completed, and the writers feel comfortable moving forward, then it’ll be time to start talking about what’s next for that.”

“We’re so grateful for the support, though,” Pratt added. “[It’s] really shocking to me how successful that movie’s been. I mean, I expected that people would love it the way I was excited about it, but it’s truly multigenerational around the world. People love it. They love Mario… It’s a really fun, funny, cute, heartwarming movie and, God, I can’t believe I’m part of it.”

  1. This will not do anywhere near as well. The first one did well because of name only. The second will be a huge flop

    1. That’s funny, because I seem to recall you insisting that the first film would be a major flop and that everyone would end up hating it a couple of months ago.
How’d that end up working out for you?

Maybe it’d be better for everyone if you just didn’t comment on things you clearly know nothing about, kay? ;)

    1. Obviously, the movie made over a billion bucks.

We’re getting at least ten sequels/spinoffs with DK, Luigi and every Mario character.

And Zelda, Splatoon, AC and Metroid will each get movies too.

  2. Interesting how they can immediately get started on that sequel but take decades to get started on sequels of games.

  3. The second film might not reach what the first is sitting at but at the very least will break $1 billion. First films usually do well with either audience ratings or is a huge money maker. Second films usually don’t do as well as the first. Third films either do as well as the second or bomb however Nintendo partaking in filmmaking will make all their movies and sequels do very well. Hate Nintendo all you want but anything they make almost always is excellent. Notice i said ‘almost always’ because even they make a couple of stinkers, heck even the best of the best devs will have a couple of stinkers.

  4. The plot of the sequel is still under wraps, but it is rumored to follow Mario and Luigi as they travel to new worlds and battle new enemies. It is also possible that the sequel will introduce some new characters from the Mario franchise.
