Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Switch physical requires at least 31.4 GB download

Konami has shared more information regarding the long-awaited Metal Gear Solid Master Collection and it’s not great news for Nintendo Switch owners. The physical edition will require a 31.4GB download and if you want to have the bonus video content installed then you will need to have another 30GB free. Of course, these file-sizes could change between now and the game’s release on 24th October, but at present it’s looking like it will be a hefty collection.

  1. Wait, that seems – really strange? No need to even mention the NES titles as those are measured in little amounts of MB. MGS1 is originally a PSone title on two CD-ROMs – so, under 1.4GB total. MGS2 and 3 were single DVD-ROM titles on the PS2. Less than 5GB each. Even with bonus video content, it would be hard to believe the collection would need more than 30GB total lol

      1. Waste of plastic to not put the full collection on the cartridge. I will not buy unless they change this decision.
For example: I have a switch oled and switch lite for on the go (I travel for work)…I can’t play anything digital on my “switch lite” without a wifi connection, even if the game is paid for and downloaded. My other option I is to keep re-designating my “main” console back and forth but that is a pain in the a**. I prefer the carts so I’m guaranteed to play not relying on a connection

      2. Nope… Unfortunately they aren’t remastered.
Would be great… Nice dream but reality and Konami saying different and price is a big joke especially on digital release.

  2. Konami, because Konami is Konami, and Konami is the worst!

They went for the cheapest cartridge and you know they did as little work as is possible for this. Have you ever heard of compression? Tears of the Kingdom is gigantic, and Nintendo managed to compress that down to just over 16GB. It’s laziness and greed from Konami.

  3. This is pathetic. So many publishers have found ways to get most, if not all of the content on Switch carts, and Konami puts 2.4GB only on the cart and leaves the vast majority of the file size for gamers to just “figure it out”.

  4. Physical copies are a crime against the environment. Glad that publisher are slowly letting them fade out.

  5. Oof. If volume 1 is that big, how big is volume 2 going to be (assuming it even comes to Switch)? My SD card won’t be able to handle all that…. I guess if I want this game I will have to buy a new one, and that will probably cost more than the game itself.

It’s a shame. I’ld rather pay more for a physical edition that actually stores the game data on the cartridge than get a cheaper physical edition that requires me to spend even more on another SD card.

Publishers love to put out “collectors editions” for games that are usually just the regular game plus some stupid, overpriced plastic toy, plus a poster and a metal case. I’d rather have the option to buy a physical edition that isn’t BS. That would actually be worth spending extra money.

    1. Actually, I just double checked. My SD card has more free space than a remembered, and microSD cards are actually pretty cheap. I probably will just buy the digital version, then. Still, would be nice to have the physical version be a real physical version, especially for less tech-savvy people who just want to pop in the cart and play.

If you are planning on buying a micro SD card the 1tb under $100usd. Worth it as I have one in my Switch.
