Aonuma: “I would never try to put the ideas of others in my game”

It isn’t uncommon for games to be compared with each other, especially if they have similar elements of gameplay. That has been no different with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, to the point that Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma commented about the matter in an interview with RTL Nieuws that was translated by Nintendo Everything.

Aonuma revealed that the team had been so busy with developing the game, they really haven’t had the chance to play other games, such as Elden Ring. That game gets compared to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom a lot, but Aonuma says that they have only heard about the game. So, they weren’t really inspired by Elden Ring at all.

Aonuma continued, saying that “of course there are situations where you make something that’s similar to an existing game, but I would never try to put the ideas of others in my game. I’m too proud for that. I’m always looking for original ideas. When I made A Link Between Worlds, you had a 3D system when you jumped, which made it look like Link was coming right at you. When I showed this to former Nintendo president (Satoru) Iwata, he said he ‘didn’t know this was possible’. I was very happy to hear that, because to me that’s the essence of game development: figuring out things no one else has thought of.

  1. Except he totally does 100% do that. It’s just Nintendo policy to say such nonsense. What’s that a stamina meter? What is this skyrim? Sorry but Zelda is filled with ideas from other games, clearly they even changed the Zelda formula to further adapt the series for modern expectations. What an unnecessary statement. As if his staff doesn’t also play video games outside of work 🙄. I feel like Sakurai was the most honest here, explaining that you need to play other games to freshen your ideas, but also see if others used your ideas before you did. Lol busy

    1. Skyward Sword released 9 days after Skyrim, so it’s not really likely the stamina gauge was taken from it.

      1. John Chris Redfield

Stamina gauge was in Shining Wisdom for the Sega Saturn in 1995 and in arcade games and I remember at least 1 PS1 game have it.

    2. Except the stamina meter originated in Skyward Sword… which came out literally within 1 week of Skyrim… somehow I don’t think that was borrowed from there. There are obviously inspirations drawn from other games, but you really picked an example that makes no sense

    3. Except the stamina meter originated in Skyward Sword, which came out literally within 1 week of Skyrim… not saying that there aren’t inspirations drawn from other games, but you really picked an example that makes absolutely no sense

    4. Skyrim, man, I remember that, the invention of stamina into the industry

There were games ripping that off within 2 weeks. Previous games developers just didn’t know how to represent an abstract value of player inputs and how to limit unrealistic over-exertion for a given character, or ways to replenish or buff the stamina. Now, every game has it, seems like.

      1. John Chris Redfield

As I said in another post there are like more than 10 games with stamina gauge/meter before Skyrim since at least 1995, Shining Wisdom even the original Secret of Mana and like 10 Arcade games by Konami and Namco also I remember a PS1 Final Fight like fighting game with stamina bar that deplete when you run jump or attack.

    5. Clearly he stole the climbing the tower, unlock map and fast travel point idea from far cry. its the exact same mechanic

    1. Breath of the Wild comes out

Elden Ring very heavily and directly inspired by it in amazing ways

Tears of the Kingdom comes out

“TotK is just an Elden Ring ripoff!!!”

  2. Good Ideas are Good Ideas. “Somebody Invented a Way to make things better but we are going to pretend it doesn’t exits.”
People Take Ideas and Improve and Build on them. It’s how things get better.

    1. So… are we just gonna pretend like they didn’t make two warrior style games with a Zelda skin over it and that both of them are on the switch 💀.

      1. So… are we just going to pretend the Zelda Warrior games weren’t made by the same people who make the Dynasty Warrior games so literally nothing was stolen💀.

        1. I’m not saying that it was stolen, totally defeating the whole purpose of my comment its the fact that his quote is basically coming off as “we don’t borrow ideas from any other games and everything we do is completely original”

    2. The very first Zelda was essentially an open world game. Most of them were actually pretty open world

  3. I like Anouma but come on, this is abit ridiculous. Of course you have ideas from other games in your games, it all comes down to how specific you’re reusing the idea.
If you took an idea and made it 1 to 1 the same then you are ripping someone off but if you take an generic idea but put your own style, IP, and tweak it to better fit your game, that’s not taking an idea, that’s making use of an generic concept

    1. Also gotta remember, not defending him or whatever, just saying, there is an entire genre of Zelda ripoffs.

  4. Wasn’t Breath of the Wild and Tears of the kingdom confirmed to be inspired by pong and Tai the Tasmania?
    =p

  5. It’s 2023, there’s hardly anything 100% original anymore. Most things are inspired from other existing things and reshaped into something that isn’t a complete copy. Even the fighting game I have pipe dreams of making is largely inspired by Skullgirls and Street Fighter.

  6. And even if he would accidentally copy an idea, who cares. In this day and age, there is no such thing as originality anymore.

  7. Although theres no originality today, it has to do with always having been on the internet. There can still be originality if you disconnect.

  8. Does that mean he also flips the bird towards fan ideas (people who want certain things to become a reality in their favorite franchise)?
