Square Enix wants to strengthen in-house development & considering remasters for older titles

Japanese powerhouse Square Enix recently held its 43rd Annual Shareholders’ Meeting and the management team handled a number of questions from investors. One of the things which came out of the question and answer session is that some investors are unhappy that there are longer gaps between big releases compared to other companies of the same size and stature. Square Enix management answered by saying that they are looking to strengthen their internal in-house development organisation, in an effort to combat this. They say that in turn they hope that this will “promote the development not only of major titles but also new IPs under the new management team.” The company was also asked by an investor about the company’s plans for remasters and remakes and highlighted that he/she would like to see an Xenogears remaster. Management replied by saying that they are currently “considering various ideas within the company” and that investors should look forward to their upcoming announcements.

In the Company’s existing businesses, it has longer gaps between game releases than its peers do. Even if the quality of its titles is high, these long gaps seem to impact sales. What are your thoughts on the release schedule for major future titles?

“I will refrain from speaking in specifics, but I will say that we believe that the strengthening of our internal development organization will be of benefit as the difficulty of developing major titles is becoming extremely high, which also has implications for development lead times. We hope that this reinforcement of our organization will promote the development not only of major titles but also new IPs under the new management team.”

Final Fantasy I-VI Pixel Remaster” has been well received. Are there plans to remaster other past titles? Personally, I would like to play “Xenogears.

“We will refrain from sharing information about new titles, but we are considering various ideas within the Company and hope that you will look forward to forthcoming announcements.”

  1. I hope they do a Xenogears and Xenosaga remaster, i would sell everything i own to purchase them including my soul.

    1. Anonymous Skywalker

Xenosaga is Bandai Namco. Both should be Switch exclusive since both were developed by Monolith Soft before they became a studio.

        1. Anonymous Skywalker

The IP technically belongs to Square even though it was developed by Monolith Soft (with help from Square Soft) before Monolith Soft became a studio. Same with Saga and Baten Kaitos.

  2. I’m hoping we get Chrono Trigger as an HD 3D remake (or remake it like Dragon Quest XII). After all these years, it’s still one of my favourite games and I’m eager to play it again with a fresh coat of paint.

    1. We’re long overdue for a Chrono remake or sequel. Let’s hope sales of the Mario RPG remake show SE that their legacy IP is worth reinvesting in

  3. Don’t even care what Square says or does anymore, even if they are planning remakes or new entries of older non ff games by the time they even get around to actually working on them, let alone actually releasing one, most of us will be in the grave by then because Square is hella slow when giving the green light for non ff games.

  4. Nobody is gonna accept a Xenogears remake if it doesn’t involve Takahashi, especially if SE adds its beloved unrequited “improvements” like with FF7R.
