Universo Nintendo claims final Switch 2 hardware has 12GB of RAM, raytracing possible, plus DLSS 3.1

Nintendo switch (oled model)

The floodgates seem to be opening on the long-rumored next generation of Nintendo’s incredibly popular Switch system. While Nintendo has kept quiet, more sources seem to be coming forward revealing what they have heard from their sources. Nintendo reportedly showed the console off to developers behind closed doors at last month’s Gamescom event in Cologne, Germany, as reported by Eurogamer and VGC. Now, Universo Nintendo’s editor has weighed in with more supposed facts about the system. He claims that the system will include 12GB of RAM and include the advanced AI upscaling tech known as DLSS, though it appears that Eurogamer got it wrong and it’s actually DLSS 3.1, not the newer DLSS 5, as they stated in their report today. Universo Nintendo’s editor-in-chief has gotten a number of leaks correct recently when it comes to Nintendo, but we won’t know for sure until the big N unveils the hybrid hardware, which is expected to release sometime next year. Here’s what he said on Twitter (translated)

“From my sources now: The DLSS version shown behind closed doors by the “Nintendo Switch 2″ tech demo was 3.1 and not 3.5 as reported or pointed out by Eurogamer. Ray-Tracing is indeed possible and the RAM memory I was informed of was 12 GB for the consumer.”

  1. Giancarlo Thomaz Senoni

Nintendo Switch was able to make very impressive games with just 4GB of RAM, imagine what they can do with 12GB RAM, next 3D Mario could look like the Mario movie

    1. Additional RAM actually barely affects the quality of the rendered image, aside from allowing to store higher quality textures and models.

The GPU’s horse power is much more important for that, which (AFAIK) we know nothing about yet. However, DLSS would potentially allow the Switch 2 to push for higher resolutions and frame rates.

      1. RAM (amount and speed) matters far more than just that, why oversimplify things you don’t actually get it? So 12GB is a great indicative of what the Switch 2 might be capable of, more importantly, resolution. Not to mention higher quality textures and assets clearly make the images better, so it does affect the rendered images. Even more in this generation where even the SSD speed can affect the image quality of the game. It wouldn’t make sense to pair 12GB of RAM with a SoC that is not capable of make good use of it, even more in a console.

Nvidia only has one main line up of ARM based SoC, the same one that the Switch was based on, so we know more than “nothing” about it. These info are enough to start speculate on that, DLSS 3.1 give us an idea of the architecture as well and it’s probably Ampere, it would be too expensive and unlikely that Nintendo would go for Lovelace. So, connecting the dots we could have a custom SoC based on Nvidia Orin.

        1. Except that the dlss 3 only comes from the lovelace architecture… nvidia orin is only based on ampere so the rtx 3000s which only manage the dlss 2, so unless nvidia tweaks the orin, we will be entitled to a single share if all this is true

  2. Wow, that’s 3 times the RAM of the original Switch if true.
Can’t say I’m too bothered by the potential of ray-tracing tbh. I’d much rather Switch 2 games focus on maintaining a solid 60 fps than go nuts with visual upgrades.

  3. Their source must either be their grandma cuz she said so or their uncle from Nintendo to come up with that.

  4. 12GB LPDDR5 RAM would be a good step in the right direction as it would mean devs have more room to play about with the hardware without the RAM being a limiting factor.

Also, the Steam Deck has 16GB LPDDR5 RAM and was able to be sold pretty cheaply, so Nintendo making the Switch 2 a cheap yet powerful system is plausible again, also I do believe it’s using DLSS 3.1 rather than 3.5, so could hint at the system using RTX 30 series chip

  5. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE everybody: stop believing these stupid rumors. We had this over and over and over and the only thing that these do for sure is dissapoint you at some point.
I don’t wanna know how crazy the Switch hadware was supposed to be before it got relevaled. I know that there were rumors about it running the succeding NVidia chip and of course people were pissed when Nintendo decided to go with the cheaper option.
But it was because they chose the cheaper one, why the Switch ended up being affordable for so many million people. Nintendo will ditch raytracing in a heartbeat if it would mean to make the system just a bit too expensive. Its also rumored to have a camera and whatnot. How should this still throw a profit? Some of these rumors will turn out lies from people who just wanna cash in some clicks and buzz.

    1. How the heck would you know? You are aware that Nintendo has a partnership with not only NVIDIA, but also Unreal Engine (Epic Games).

      1. The return of the N-Dub nation. The switch is calling gamers and commenters of old out again. Whatever the final product, it shall be an amazing bit of equipment.

        F=ma.

    2. Before the Switch was announced pretty much all the correct specs were leaked by the most reliable leakers. What I’ve learned is not to “stop believing these stupid rumours” but rather that there are definitely legitimate leaks from Nintendo but you certainly have to be sceptical. You’ve just got to know where to look, and in particular look for when people are corroborating with each other.

Right now I feel confident on some of the key details – in particular, it’s going to be a fairly straightforward Switch successor with backwards compatibility included. I’d say also about 90% on some form of DLSS being included. Beyond that, there’s a bit of disagreement between sources and so other details I think it’s wise to take with a pinch of salt. But given the avalanche of Switch 2 leaks coming from the last few days including from people who have a strong track record of getting it right, it’s safe to say that some of these are genuine. I don’t expect to see this announced anytime soon though, I would have thought Nintendo will want the original Switch to have a last hurrah in terms of sales this Christmas before they announce anything new which will undoubtedly slow down sales of the Switch.

      1. Not saying there ain’t anything legitimate there. Afterwards you of course can see that some leaks are true. Just saying that people who believed in the wrong ones are gonna start crying what they hoped would come and what Nintendo economically decided to run with. For quite a few generations, Nintendo found out that going for specs won’t do it. They’re going for the experience. Switch 2 is surely gonna be faster and I guess it should deliver somehow a PS4-like experience to stand out enough from Switch 1, or they totally change the concept (but that would be weird after it worked so well for them and still would for years to come)

  6. I think its going to be far more advance from other gaming hard and have higher GB ram. I don’t know when are they going to reveal it, but I really do hope they have good launch titles for it.

  7. I see 8 GB RAM as an absolute minimum, as the Switch has 4 GB, and the Wii U had 2 GB RAM.

Does 12 GB RAM cost much more than 8 GB?

    1. With the Switch running on LPDDR4 RAM, which is a more cost affective RAM type, LPDDR5 on the Next Gen Switch wouldn’t boost up the price much, you can expect it to be the same price as the OLED Switch or slightly higher.

  8. Well il be happy if it can run something like rdr2, have proper ACTUAL voice chat ( not a stupid app ) more internal memory or maybe the option of a premium version with more internal memory and an Oled screen perhaps and most importantly backward compatibility even though il keep my current switches and also maybe an internet browser that’s not slow and maybe the option to purchase movies. I would have thought too that they would have released an app by now that you can manage your switch etc for data info on time playing games etc.
For some reason my playtime on some games builds up and then all of a sudden goes back to just played or played for a few hours etc.

    1. Why would you want web or movies on Switch. Everyone has a mobile phone that will be a million times better for that. However I wholehartedly agree with voice chat integrated into the system and not an App on your phone.

      1. I want a web browser so I don’t have to get my phone to search for something. It’s better to just pause the game, open the browser, look up some guides, and then go back. Seamless and easy.

  9. One thing is certain, if it is indeed dls 3 then it is a brand new chip because no nvidia soc contains for the moment RTX 40XX

  10. I want a web browser as well, like the good’ol PS3 and PS4 era, PS5 has temporary makeshift solutions for getting on the web but not an actual web browser. I know this is a Nintendo fourm, so don’t get all dramatic because i mentioned PlayStation. I used the web browser all the time as an avid trophy hunter, it’s very useful and more convenient then having a phone. In fact, im posting on this fourm from the hidden PS5 web browser.

      1. Yeah and neither was the horsepower of the Switch 2 but that’s released. And Project Cafe wasn’t relased by Nintendo first it came out on a rumour.

  11. Why is everyone using shortcuts like DLSS in blog posts or articles and never make mention of what the shorts stand for? I think this has become a bad habit.
