The Entertainment Software Association confirms that E3 is now officially dead

e3 2022

E3 was always been a highlight of the summer with the sheer number of high profile video games announced and the introduction of new hardware. The Entertainment Software Association has confirmed this afternoon that the trade show is now officially dead and there’s no plans to bring it back to life. Reedpop, tried and failed to regenerate the annual event in Los Angeles, and that seems to have been the final nail in the coffin, besides gaming companies doing their own online presentations as well as the introduction of The Summer Game Fest. Here’s what Stanley Pierre-Louis, president and CEO of the ESA, said:

“We know the entire industry, players and creators alike have a lot of passion for E3. We share that passion. We know it’s difficult to say goodbye to such a beloved event, but it’s the right thing to do given the new opportunities our industry has to reach fans and partners.”

  1. Well fuck!

    Merry Christmas, folks……

Thanks, COVID! Now I have to put my trust in a company that tries to be as secretive and silent as possible when left to their own devices. This is why they got gigaleaked.

      1. To the best of my knowledge, he saying, That because Covid basically killed E3, now Nintendo doesn’t have that yearly pressure to get people hyped up about their games (For instance I don’t think Metroid Prime 4 would have ever been announced (and then probably have been canceled instead of rebooted after problems rose up) if it wasn’t for E3) Now they can continue to be more secretive and not tell us what they are working on.

And I guess he’s referencing the Giga leak that happened a few years ago giving us a bunch of Nintendo Secrets (for some reason, Idk how that has to do with E3). I am not saying I 100% agree, but it’s nice to have that yearly expectation in my opinion, but I’m just more patient nowadays and am not really starving for the next Nintendo Direct anymore, it’ll come when it comes

    1. Like the one that took place at the very end of the month? Or the year Nintendo decided to be radio-silent (the same year as the Gigaleak)?

  2. Oh well. It was fun while it lasted. I went to E3 between 2014-19 and honestly 18 and 19 were pretty alright for me.

I’ll miss E3, But yeah, I can see why they’d end it. It’s a pretty pointless event at this point and If you only care about Nintendo even more so. Come June every company will release a direct of some kind and that’s all we need.

  3. This genuinely makes me so sad… E3 was always one of my biggest highlights of the year :(

Hopefully with publisher presentations and SGF, we’ll at least see rhe tradition carried on every year around June/July….

  4. See fellas, Its official now. Its completely dead. We know that this day has finally come. E-3 was really great for all of us to enjoy games, but now it has reach its last lap. Like Nintendo do there directs on there own time, we know companies always do their own thing by doing their own announcements.

      1. E3 was on life support even b4 2020. Letting in the public, no longer being a press only event, was an attempt to save themselves. Then Covid happened. It killed E3’s Hail Mary.

  5. It’s a real shame. I always loved when E3 rolled around, especially as it was always within a week of (or on) my birthday. I guess with this year’s big Direct in June, it’s been replaced, so as long as Nintendo keep doing that I’ll be relatively happy, I guess.

  6. Nintendo hadn’t done an e3 stage presentation in years as they switched over to the Nintendo Direct format. Which really made a lot of sense to go that route instead of spending a fortune renting a venue and flying everyone over.

  7. E3 has been around since 1995 there goes another thing that crashed and burned throughout my lifetime. Will I have nothing leave before I die 😞

  8. The implications of this could mean game companies are less incentivised to create big budget games that are surrounded by major hype. They could do something like a Nintendo Direct, but it won’t be as impactful. It’s quite disappointing there won’t be a centralized event for every game company to go all out on their advertising, which was really impressive to me even though I’ve never physically been at the events.

    1. The crack starts appearing with the lackluster 2018 Sony’s E3 (remember the infamous flute guy?). It culminated in Sony deciding not to attend the 2019 E3 (since they have no games to show in 2019 lol). But ultimately the deciding blow was definitely COVID restrictions.

Nintendo for their part remained consistently interesting all the way through the end of E3 imo.

  9. It’s quite sad to see this happen. Although it has been more common for individual videos to just be uploaded online, and I haven’t actually sat down to watch E3 in years, I have very fond memories of doing so, especially during school.

  10. Got to attend E3 2005. Stayed at the same hotel as all the Ninendo big wigs. Reggie introduced my wife and I to Shigeru Miyamoto and the late Satoru Iwata in the hotel lobby. Even attended a private Nintendo party where Maroon 5 were the entertainment.

  11. Hot damn…

I’m honestly a little upset. I’ve said for years that I’d love to go to E3 at some point, hopefully during one where they announce a new F-Zero and have a playable demo on the floor.

This means we may never again have such legendary moments- good, bad, and hilarious- like Miyamoto coming onstage with a Master Sword and Hylian Shield, or “My body is ready!”, or the infamous Wii Music, er, “demonstration,” or a Sony spokesperson burning Microsoft by ensuring consumers that PS4 would play used games.

Thanks for the ride, E3- I’ll miss you.
