Zelda producer shuts down the idea of a Zelda style Mario Maker game

A Zelda style Mario Maker game would be great fun, and Polygon asked the all-important question, why haven’t we got one? Speaking to Polygon, The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma, told the site that it is not something they have been considering as although The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom had the building mechanics, they don’t want to make creativity a requirement.

“When we’re creating games like Tears of the Kingdom, I think it’s important that we don’t make creativity a requirement. Instead, we put things into the game that encourage people to be creative, and give them the opportunity to be creative, without forcing them to.

But when asked directly about a Mario Maker-style game for Zelda, Aonuma had an interesting answer about the nature of Zelda games and what they offer to players.

“There are people who want the ability to create from scratch, but that’s not everyone. I think everyone delights in the discovery of finding your own way through a game, and that is something we tried to make sure was included in Tears of the Kingdom; there isn’t one right way to play. If you are a creative person, you have the ability to go down that path. But that’s not what you have to do; you’re also able to proceed to the game in many other different ways. And so I don’t think that it would be a good fit for The Legend of Zelda to necessarily require people to build things from scratch and force them to be creative.”

  1. You gota be kidding, I’ve been holding out hope for this game. It’s so doable and would sell like crazy.
Just imagine millions of people being able to create dungeons, traps etc and their own hyrule map.
Endless playability with some ridiculous ideas.
You could buy this game to just purely play everyone’s builds or buy it just to build yourself, or both.

Nintendo could just implicate the basics of the map area, dungeon sizes etc and let everyone get creative.
    Damn shame!!

  2. What a disappointment this was considered and shut down. Building puzzles for others to solve sounds like fun and vise versa having an infinite supply of Zelda themed puzzles built by the community sounds too good to pass up. Its a real shame we won’t see this game be a reality. I hope they change their mind, but I already know if they turned it down once it probably won’t happen. Huge missed opportunity.

  3. Well that’s dumb. You could have said the same thing about Mario. “I don’t think that it would be a good fit for Super Mario Bros to necessarily require people to build things from scratch and force them to be creative.” And yet look at the success of the Super Mario Maker series.

Pull the trigger Ninty. We’ll absolutely consume a 2D Zelda maker.

  4. Japanese people generally and historically have always been more reserve to change. I can see from their POV why they won’t want to do this as it will break a lot of traditions that are held. It took a long time for Japanese to evolve out of comitting hara kiri when they believe they are a failure. Hell when a driver was 15 seconds EARLY the Japanese train industry did a several million dollars worth of an apology and forced a major retraining of all their drivers.

One such condition is they have to not look at their speedometer and go by how the view goes and they eventually get it right on the dot. There’s methods they use to help establish a speed pure visually.

  5. Sorry Classic Zelda fans, I’m really not seeing how it would sell or work well. I can see why hardcore fans and people who enjoy creating games would love this idea, but I totally get why Nintendo are saying no to the idea.
