Pocketpair says Pokemon is a “great predecessor” to the popular Palworld

The smash hit Palworld

Palworld is currently taking the world by storm selling five million copies in three days despite the game being available on Game Pass. Speaking to Japanese publication Automation, Pocketpair CEO and lead developer, Takuro Mizobe, talked about the similarities to Game Freak’s Pokemon games and said that the mainline Pokemon franchise is a “great predecessor” to what they have ultimately achieved with the open world adventure Palworld.

We make our games very seriously,” Mizobe said. “And we have absolutely no intention of infringing upon the intellectual property of other companies.”

In a separate Automation interview, Mizobe said that Palworld takes a lot of inspiration from Pokémon, as it was a “great predecessor” to both Pocketpair’s latest game and the creature-collecting genre as a whole. However, he explained that Palworld is less like Nintendo’s iconic IP and more like Studio Wildcard’s action-adventure survival crafting game Ark: Survival Evolved.

I don’t care that this company wanted to make a Pokémon-like, and the gameplay is definitely different in several regards, but this studio (Pocketpair) is kinda slimy. I saw a video of a prior game they released that was pretty blatantly ripping-off BotW, and multiple creatures in this game seem to be asset flips of Pokémon, so that’s quite pathetic. Inspiration is one thing, but ripping-off is another.

    1. I’m coming from VGC and the latest development is that there’s a possibility that the 3D model mesh is the exact copy of some pokemon from S/V. If it’s proven to be true then I can’t imagine TPC will be keep silent anymore…

  2. Bunch of slimy plagiarists. This isn’t their first time, but Pokemon haters now are giving money to a bunch of con-men.

    1. Megami Tensei would like to have a word with you, because they came up with the idea of capturing and fighting demons first. Pokemon came way later. If someone copied anything, it was Pokemon from Megami Tensei.

      1. I think it’s even funnier that people don’t realize that Pokemon themselves did copy SMT, and furthermore, Pokemon are based off of animals and you can’t copyright that.

  3. I would tolerate this game if they had made the monster designs by themselves, without borrowing (/copying) anything from the Pokémon designs. I can’t stand plagiarism.

  4. I don’t care if Palworld is a Pokemon Knockoff, i just hope it gets ported for PlayStation. Palworld is in the early access phase and Sony has a no early access policy so that might be why it’s not on PlayStation yet. PocketPair said they would consider a PlayStation port in the foreseeable future, i know they have other Xbox exclusive titles and they remain exclusive to Xbox after they said the same thing im just hoping they actually port Palworld.

      1. Wait what, how would you know what fanboy tears taste like. Furthermore, if Palworld gets ported for PlayStation then it’s a 50/50 kinda thing at this point it’s purely speculation based off a comment PocketPair made. Am i gonna go purchase an Xbox or Pc just for Palworld, no because they haven’t specifically said it’ll be on PSN or not. It’s on Xbox Gamepass, because they allow games in early access and Sony doesn’t.

      2. Sooooo many salty Pokemon fans hahaha…who cares if people are enjoying palworld..maybe this will push Pokemon to step it up. Also if your gripe is “slimy studio” or ” copying ideas ” then theres a lot of games you shouldn’t play (including Pomemon!)

  5. I’m pretty sure this will just result in bigger, more detailed pokemon games. I mean I’m playing pal world atm, it feels a lot like arceus. PW has more going on, but at the same time, it’s still very similar. If pokemon introduced some kind of traininer weapons, training leveling, and base building. Then PW would instantly feel boring. But that’s all pokemon is really missing….. Unless you could capture trainers. Which is a thing PW has. It’s a fun feature, but also kind of silly.

    1. Some of the things you mentioned (trainer weapons, capture trainers) I bet will never get added to future mainline titles. Heck you as a trainer can’t even directly hurt the pokemons (except for catching them). There’s definitely a massive difference in worldview between Pokemon and Palworld.

  6. I haven’t played it but I love what this game is doing by putting Pokemon to shame.

I’m also amused at the claims of plagiarism as if Pokemon somehow owns the rights to small, fantasy creatures. By that logic, Pokemon plagiarized Dragon Quest.

  7. It is okay from the first one hour I put into it last night. I have a horrible feeling the tutorial may be rather lengthy, and I’m not a fan of the survival aspects. However, I continue to hope that this game offers entertainment for those that find it more enjoyable.

    1. I can’t say it is lengthy, to be honest. I’m roughly three hours in, and close to the first boss. Some of that time was me running around and just enjoying the scenery though.

  8. I feel like I’m in a bizarro alternate world where some cheap knockoff game (that proudly uses AI and from a company whose CEO previously was doing NFTs) blew up. This game will be dead by year’s end by the time the gimmick has worn off.

Has me wondering how much this must be botted. I’m not even a huge fan of pokemon or anything— slimy studio all over tbh. Millions in just a couple days after zero discussion around release? Red flags all over this thing.

  9. On day one of Early Access, warts and all, Palworld is distinctly more impressive than anything Game Freak’s released in a very long time. Even when compared to the present-day state of Legends:Arceus or Scarlet+Violet, it easily puts both to shame in terms of technical quality and polish.

These claims of anti-consumer or “slimy” behavior by the devs is likely sour grapes because the “clone” is so much more ambitious, more polished, and more technically competent than the “original”.

With regards to plagiarism: If there was any concrete truth behind the vague, nebulous claims of plagiarism floating around in Nintendo-friendly comments sections today, such evidence could be turned over to Steam or Xbox to have the game taken down in a matter of days. I sincerely doubt any such evidence exists. Even if one could argue that certain Pal designs are wholly unoriginal and inspired directly by specific Pokemon designs, that’s perfectly lawful, as it should be: inspiration is a fundamental and unavoidable input to the creative process. I’d also note that plenty of Pokemon designs across all gens are pretty generic conceptually to begin with; thankfully Game Freak can’t own the exhaustive rights to the brilliant secret formula of “animal + element = fantasy creature”.

With regards to Craftopia still being in Early Access: Time will tell whether this is actually significant, ie whether the studio can properly support both games at the same time. So far, there seems to be little evidence of Pocketpair abandoning Craftopia (which was sitting at a Very Positive rating on Steam a month ago after three years in EA), with the game having seen multiple updates and a new development roadmap released just within the last month. Regardless, this is a humorous bit of concern trolling coming from Pokemon fans considering the shameful state of Game Freak’s recent games, be it at launch or beyond.

The reality is that if Pocketpair truly wishes to rise to the level of shameless scumbaggery that Pokemon has achieved, they’ve got a very long way to go. Of course Game Freak got a few decades ahead of the curve by routinely tricking children and uninformed parents into buying two or more copies of the same game, a historical habit that’ll make it nigh-impossible for anyone to ever catch up. Even narrowing the window down to the Switch era, Pokemon already has a healthy head-start thanks to those $40 cosmetic skins in a kids game (hey, that’s $10 more than Palworld in its entirety!) and explicitly and repeatedly lying about visual improvements to justify massive and permanent reductions in core content. Good luck catching up with that.

    1. I believe that Craftopia still in early access is not a problem like Star Citizen is, which are several year by now.

  10. I have to admit, some of the models absolutely look like Pokemon. However, Pokemon themselves are based off of real life animals, so it’s a bit of a toss up since you cannot copyright a real animal like that. I’m not saying some of the models don’t look similar, but it’s sort of a weird area for copyright issues.

Also, I know this blog isn’t talking about copyright, but it comes to mind a lot with this game. Regardless, I have been enjoying my time on my Steam Deck, and I look forward to playing much more.
