Sonic Frontiers developers initially said “if we fail here, there will be no chance”

Sonic Frontiers

SEGA and the Sonic Team have talked about the initial development of the fairly well-received Sonic Frontiers. The team consisted of 120 developers which included designers, programmers, sound, etc. Talking further they said that the game would be a make or break situation for Sonic games and that the whole team was filled with a sense of crisis with the thought of “If we fail here, there will be no chance!” making them all perform to expectation. Thankfully everything worked out all right in the end.

“The development team had a maximum of 20 planners, and a maximum of 120 development members
including designers, programmers, sound, etc. This project has taken about five years in total. For the first year, we worked with a small group of people to finalize the specifications, and during that time I was working on another project, and by the time I came back, the prototype we had created was still quite satisfactory both in terms of graphics and playability. It wasn’t. In the project, we are using an in-house game engine called “Hedgehog Engine” that specializes in Sonic’s gameplay, but development of this is also progressing at the same time, and we are working on the creation of “Open Zone”. We continued to add necessary features one after another. The team was filled with a sense of crisis: “We have to create something new!” “If we fail here, there will be no chance!”

  1. Should have failed, honestly. Open world and Sonic badly mix and the Cyberspace levels were c/p’d from previous games, just with other assets mixed in).

Sonic is nothing but outdated, commercial slop with no rhyme or reason anymore. The games are bad, the characters are now cardboard cutout or too anime, a hundred copyright issues and it feels like it’s unrecognizable from its roots. No one who played Sonic 1 in 1991 was like “You know what Sonic needs? A bajillion characters who either are one-offs, filler (cartoon/anime/comics) or pointless once their arcs are over, continual story changes who no longer make sense and gameplay that either plays itself or play badly”.

Also, Tangle from the comics and Sticks from Boom are now canon, despite that they NEVER WILL show up in the games and never got ACTUAL introductions for non-Boom watchers/non-IDW readers, but we’ll say so just to shut up the fans in the back.

Also, Sonic Prime was the epitome of cheap animation, cheap story telling, wasted potential due to a small budget and repetitive scenes, and they pretend it’s canon to the game.

As for Frontiers, Sage was a pointless anime loli character that only served as a red herring. And Eggman, the same man who wanted to kill everyone in Forces (which itself was REALLY BAD), loves her like a daughter?? Hello?? Did they forget how he treats Metal Sonic? If anything, him being cold to her in JP makes WAY more sense, but Ian Flynn’s writing has always been fanfic-y and now, the games are his fanfictions brought to life (while the 2010 writers were morons who didn’t know anything about the series, aside from YouTube clips). And they even retconned away her only story relevance. And now that the game is over, she will be a glorified cameo and no longer serve a purpose. As expected, they didn’t learn anything after what they did with Shadow.

    LET IT DIE, SEGA!

    1. If you don’t like a Sonic game, Don’t play It. Don’t even come to this article because your toxic negativity is not wanted. Sonic Frontiers was such an excellent game to play and it’s 3D Sonic done correctly and right. It’s a million times better than the boost formula that plays itself with full on automation and it certainly plays better than Super Mario Odyssey in my opinion.

You’re only here to be toxic to try and influence people not to play another sonic game. Not matter what game sonic team makes, so sega can kill off sonic as their mascot. You’re actually pretty fucked up in the head. Get some help.

  2. They still failed. It might not have been as bad as Forces, but it was very disappointing regardless. It felt more like I was playing an alpha build than a complete product.

The only thing I can give ST credit for is that they at least did something new. It’s not the easiest thing to do. But, man.. their quality control needs some serious work.

    1. the last part of the dlc was decent after it got patched, i’d say that better than the whole vanilla game but still they will never reach the heights of the super mario series.

    2. There seems to be a lot of disdain in here for Sonic. The first post comes across as pretty trollish. In the end though, there really isn’t any need to make a positive case for Sonic anymore because Sonic is riding high. As a Sonic fan, I used to have to make the case for Sonic in the face of negativity like we see in this mini forum, but not anymore. I will say though that story wise, Sonic has always been much more compelling than Mario. He is an inspiring figure that always does what he needs to to help his friends. Gameplay wise, I’ve had nothing but fun messing around in Sonic Frontiers.

  3. Frontiers was fun. Had some gripes with it (namely it was pretty obvious that Chaos Island was rushed, og Supreme fight was bland, etc.), but it was fun to run around in a big open world. I didn’t need the typical “momentum” buzzword that people throw around for the game to be fun, but I would have preferred if we had, say, the spindash ability starting with base game. Spindash was pure fun.

Please no more green hill, and chemical plant has begun to overstay its welcome too. More original levels, and some original concepts and gameplay too please

      1. While true, I’d argue that companies like Toys for Bob showcase that you can still recreate the same or similar gameplay as what was so good about those older games.

        1. Sometimes Sonic Team made some tough mistakes in the past. It doesn’t who you are or what you are. Mistakes will always happens and it will continue to exist. Sonic Team is always known to make sure they don’t repeat the mistakes like they did before.

          1. “Sonic Team is always known to make sure they don’t repeat the mistakes like they did before”.
Sure, they do not repeat the same mistakes, they make new mistakes!

          2. “Sonic Team is always known to make sure they don’t repeat the mistakes like they did before”.

Come on, someone give this guy an award for this for comment.

          3. I am glad Sonic Frontiers worked out in the end: yeah the game has its flaws, but if this is the foundation for the next decade then I am very optimistic as long as Sonic Team keeps up the momentum

        1. Only a manchild bitch would want to be gruntilda. Picking a shitty character from a mid game and sticking to a rhyming scheme is peak cringe. You must be one boring bastard

  4. “Reading about the high stakes and determination of Sonic Frontiers developers on idmcracksdl is truly inspiring. Their dedication and commitment to their craft are commendable. Can’t wait to see the result of their hard work!

    1. The negativity surrounding this sonic game is peak cringe. But it merely comes from the Mario fanbase, to impose their jealousy and hatred of a sonic game flourishing. To be honest, I played sonic frontiers and I Enjoyed that game so much (I’d even prefer it over Super Garbage Odyssey to which the Nintendo Fanboys overhyped). I didn’t care what other people think. I went in with an open mind thinking “will this Sonic game overthrow the rest of the other sonic games that were pure garbage in the meta era?

  5. Sonic Frontiers >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Stupid Mario Oddballsey. I guarantee that saying will lore out the cringe ass pathetic Mario Fandom who are hating on My boy Sonic. I guess that’s why so many Americans are fat losers, who haven’t had a mustache-trim in years and ain’t athletic enough to join the military… geez, go figure. 🙄

If you don’t like a Sonic game, Don’t play It. Don’t even come to this article because your toxic negativity is not wanted. Sonic Frontiers was such an excellent game to play and it’s 3D Sonic done correctly and right.
