Zelda movie director says he wants to “fulfil people’s greatest desires”

Total Film has managed to get the chance to catch up with The Legend of Zelda movie director Wes Ball who briefly chatted about the upcoming project. He seems to be thrilled to be given the opportunity to work on the franchise and says that his mission is to “fulfil people’s greatest desires” and that he wants to give people who watch it a chance to “escape.” Here’s what was said by Mr. Ball:

“I have this awesome idea. I’ve been thinking about it for a long freakin’ time, of how cool a Zelda movie would be… I want to fulfil people’s greatest desires. I know it’s important, this [Zelda] franchise, to people and I want it to be a serious movie. A real movie that can give people an escape.”

Ball even points to that escapism (“I want to live in that world,” he says) as the driving force behind The Legend of Zelda movie.

“That’s the thing I want to try to create – it’s got to feel like something real. Something serious and cool, but fun and whimsical.”

        1. yeah you are right, but you can’t tell me a live action zelda movie doesn’t scare you a bit, i don’t want it to be shit but im defenelty not hopeful, the zelda is a franchise filled with beautiful designs and ideas, and that’s the problem with being live action, ton of stuff about the things we love about the series will be adapted in a way to look realistic and that’s something that could have been avoided by being animated, and i know if you had the chance to direct this movie you would choose it to be animated too

          1. Would you say Peter Jackson’s LotR trilogy looked like shit for being live action? If yes, I guess you would think a LoZelda live action movie won’t have beautiful designs & ideas.

Anyway, there’s been plenty of live action fantasy movies with beautiful locales & whatnot, so I have no reason to believe this can’t do the same.

          2. I am open to the idea of a live action movie, as Zelda is one of the more realistic games (even with all the fantasy) from Nintendo, so I think it would do justice to the franchise’s world. However, I am also open to an animated movie, so if we get one of them, or even both, as Bray Trigger pointed, I would be happy either way.

  1. Well I hope for the best. When I heard Illumination was going to work on the Mario Movie, I thought it would be dead in the water from the start. And they proved me wrong with a great faithful, filled with references adaptation. Here’s hoping Nintendo is as involved with this project too and Wes has done his homework on the franchise by playing or at least watching others play the games, so a faithful and enjoyable adaptation can be achieved.

  2. My desire was for it to be animated, but I’ll still give it a chance. In the end I just hope that it’s good

  3. I Biden stands strong with illegals and stands against Americans.

My desire is keep the franchise away from DEI and all them bullplop. If it’s gonna have someone from the infinite alphabet mafia it has to be natural and not forced like Bolson (who is one of my favorite side characters). If a character is of PoC, again it has to be natural and has to make sense.

  4. My dream Zelda movie would be a collaboration with Studio Ghibli. This live action film has me very apprehensive.

    1. good news is that the director stated he wants to make a live action ghibli movie with this film, bad news is that you can’t recreate a ghibli movie if it’s live action lol

    1. There’s nothing wrong with LoZelda having a love story. It’s honestly been long overdo in the games. Honestly, I like to think of Legend with Tom Cruise & Tim Curry as being what LoZelda with a love story could be like in movie format.

I do like to think that Skyward Sword had a love story between Link & Zelda at it’s core, though. Best friends turning into lovers is a thing in real life, after all.

All that said, I will say this first LoZelda movie should definitely not be a love story. That can come later with a future film.

  5. He wants to fulfil people’s desires, huh? Will that include Link and Zelda being adults? Link wearing his traditional green cap and green tunic? No wokeness? Zelda looking the least bit female? Link and Zelda being a couple? (I didn’t consider adding the last one until after I read Lady Rosalina’s post. Let’s be honest, we all want Link and Zelda be a couple; no one ships Link with that normie Mallon) I know a majority of my comments on this site recently (if not in general) have been negative, but I can’t help but notice that Nintendo has been making a lot of bad decisions ever since they started letting Sonic crossover with Mario. When someone offers you a breath mint, it’s not an insult, they’re trying to help.

    1. There’s plenty of ppl that don’t ship link and Zelda…. people shipped link with several other characters…or non at all .And what do you mean make Zelda look the least bit female….only basic shippers ship them for being a boy and girl alone. The two barely interact in most games. But then again you only added it just to spite my opinion…
No one mentioned malon. Don’t be a toxic shipper

  6. Oh, dear… A Zelda movie. I would assume that the Mario movie did well enough to bring about this idea. I can only hope this movie does well enough, assuming they don’t drop the ball here. We have had a lot of animated movies with pretty good success, or these movies have been pretty good positive-wise. The only thing is they have to make a good movie to “fulfill people’s greatest desires”.

Of course, they need to be careful as they are working with Nintendo, thankfully we won’t get to “Link: The Faces of Evil” of bad, I would hope we don’t get to that level, but I wish them the best.

    1. “I would assume that the Mario movie did well enough to bring about this idea.”

Miyamoto said he was working with Avi Arad for years about the movie.

  7. Honestly hope that the legend of Zelda movie succeeds: well I would have preferred for it to have been animated, I think with the right people and budget it could succeed

My money is still on Tom Holland playing Link

  8. A lot of people hated Wind Waker for it’s cartoony look (sadly, I was one of them) but it ended up being one of the best LoZelda games. So to totally write this movie off because it’ll be live action is a little dumb. Ninty’s overseeing this, so I’ll remain optimistic for now. Besides, it doesn’t stop a future Zelda movie from being animated one day. As long as the world doesn’t end today, we could get a Studio Ghibli LoZelda film someday. Some people just have no patience.
