In a recent interview conducted by Sonic Stadium, the head of Sonic Team, Takashi Iizuka, built upon his statement two years ago by offering fans of the IDW comics a possible pathway to seeing their favorite characters from the comics in game format. Some of these characters, such as Tangle the Lemur and Surge the Tenrec, are already playable in the mobile game Sonic Dash, but to see them in a mainline game (beyond having their names mentioned like in Sonic Frontiers) would be a great victory for the most devoted of their fans. His full response was as follows:
“Iizuka (via interpreter): I do work closely with the team at IDW when they’re making their new characters, and really making sure we’re having lots of fun in making really good characters. And I know in the mobile games we have released or will release the IDW characters. So as far as the potential future of IDW characters appearing in games, hopefully there’s a good chance.”
The Sonic The Hedgehog series has a seemingly endless amount of characters in it, yet few get the same amount of screentime as its namesake, and even fewer get treated with the same respect. But Sonic Team and SEGA have, in recent years, tried to shift away from nepotism and towards embracing the series’ diversity. Sonic Mania brought back Ray the Flying Squirrel and Mighty the Armadillo, both of whom had been lost to time, and Sonic Frontiers, as previously mentioned, made it a habit of referencing more obscure characters in order to honor their contributions to Sonic’s history, as well as to possibly generate intrigue for their return.
Between the upcoming live-action film Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (to which Iizuka himself has been an advisor), the multiplatform game Sonic X Shadow Generations, and a bright future for Sonic’s lesser-known enemies and allies, fans of the series have much to look forward to this year and beyond.

This is such a wild statement considering most of the main sonic characters are already barely utilize, characters like cream, blaze, vector and etc are barely use.
As long as they are properly introduced in the game, I’m OK with this
can’t wait to see Blah reaction to Sally Acorn in Sonic Frontiers 3
Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters are dead and buried. It’s all about the Resistance now.
Typical. I don’t know what Sega has against Sally Acorn. Did she ever, like, try to kill their company.
I have been wanting Tangle in a Sonic game since her debut: please make it happen SEGA!
I’m honestly surprised it hasn’t happened yet, some of those characters have cool designs, like Tangle and Surge.
I really don’t mind seeing it happen in Sonic games as long as they are properly introduced in someways in a Sonic game. I’m still a huge Sonic fan til this day.
I don’t have any particular faves among the IDW characters but I wouldn’t mind seeing Clutch the Opossum make an appearance somehow. He’s more or less IDW Sonic’s version of Marvel Comics’ Kingpin and it would be interesting seeing a underworld criminal mastermind scheming plans and creating trouble for Sonic and co. whenever they are not dealing with Eggman.
After looking him up, he’s got an awesome design, so I’d love to see him in a game. If his character is as good as his design, I definitely wouldn’t mind him being a recurring final boss. He’s got big shoes to fill, though, if you’re comparing him to Wilson Fisk.
ugh
I’m not really a fan of the IDW comics but I would love to see Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters return.
