The head of the Sonic Team Takashi Iizuka and game designer and producer Shun Nakamura have recently participated in an interview discussing a wide range of subjects. One thing that came up is Takashi Iizuka was asked whether the Sonic Team had any plans to remake or remaster the beloved Sonic Advance series from the Gameboy Advance. Sadly it turns out the answer is no. However, Iizuka says that if the opportunity eventually arose then they would “love to do it.”
Speaking of Sonic’s past, it’s generally accepted that the three Sonic Advance games are among the best 2D Sonic games, but other than a Virtual Console release on Wii U in Japan they haven’t really seen much of a re-release. Is there a licensing reason or some other reason why those games have never re-released, either in a standalone retro collection or in one of Nintendo’s online game libraries?
TI: There’s currently no plans for the Sonic Advance series to be remade or remastered, but we don’t know what the future holds.
Katsuyuki Shigihara was a director on Sonic Origins, which took Sonic 1, 2, 3 and CD, and we remastered that and brought it out for fans to enjoy. And if we have the chance, if there’s an opportunity for the Advance series to also get that treatment, or whatever circumstances may pop up, we’d love to do it.

The Sonic Advance games are all wonderful and completely deserving of a remaster treatment. Given that it doesn’t look like Sega are going to be making any new 2D Sonic games of that calibre anytime soon, they’d definitely be near the top of my wishlist.
Sega try to actually put out remasters/ports of beloved Sonic games literally everyone wants that would be incredibly easy to bring to modern platforms challenge (impossible ultra mega death impossible)
At least we’re getting Generations… Adventure and Advance fans are gonna keep struggling it seems…
Maybe this means they’ll put the games on NSO. We already have the Genesis/Megadrive on NSO Expansion Pack, so SEGA adding them to the GBA selection makes sense to me.
Also these got rereleases on the Wii U, so it’s not totally uncalled for either. They aren’t so much of a remaster outside of the emulator’s rewind and savestate features, but hey that’s still pretty good for the casual consumer
The advance trilogy of games are among the best games that came out during the decline era of the sonic ip, shot out to Dimps for developing such amazing games.
Its good seeing you here mate!
I wanted to see the advance series be added to the Nintendo Switch Gameboy Advance online subscription for once but we know it won’t happened yet.
Add the Advance trilogy to the NSO already!
We’re never getting these. And no, don’t put them on NSO.
flips Iizuka the bird
Do you just hate the Advance series? Is this why Cream has been defucto (outside of the Apple-exclusive game)?
Personally, I already own all these games, but I would like this series to have 2.5 remakes (alongside Sonic Rush and Sonic 4) in the eventual future, and this is not a promising look.
I’d absolutely love remakes or remasters of the advanced games, but my question is should they change the art style or keep the pixel art going?
Well, it would be cool instead of a remaster they did an Advance 4 for Switch 2 and other consoles. Don’t know the odds of it happening though.
Boo! Poor form.
