Penny’s Big Breakaway developer Evening Star has had to cut its staff

There was a fair amount of hype around Penny’s Big Breakaway before it launched as it was by the team behind the beloved Sonic Mania video game. However, it doesn’t seem as though the hype necessarily translated into sales, as the company Evening Star has said it has had to part with six team members due to “volatile market conditions in the games industry and operational realities of our business.” Let’s hope those affected by the layoffs land on their feet.

  1. I heard this game was plagued by bugs and glitches. Bad word of mouth probably hurt its sales. If it released after more time in the oven, it could’ve been an indie classic.

  2. This game bombed primarily because… It was more of a game design technical wank experience than than a fun platformer. Basically, it’s designed for the twitchy 24-35 male crowd that speedruns Mario 64 already, and not the all-age all-gender crowd it should have been targeting.

The second reason this bombed is because the mascot character, Penny, has a complete unappealing mess of a design.
