Rumor: Switch 2 will support Samsung SD Express microSD cards

As the Nintendo Switch continues to age, one thing that has become increasingly apparent over the years is that the console’s technology has gotten more and more outdated. It has only made the need for a new Nintendo console more urgent. Now, with the Switch successor coming soon, a new rumor has appeared suggesting just how much more technologically up-to-date the console is going to be.

It has been discovered that Nintendo has a job opening for an Electro-Mechanical Engineer. Among the requirements are a couple of mentions of having knowledge of the power behind PCB designs. One of them specifically mentions “experience with high speed signaling and power delivery on PCB designs that contain elements such as PCIE, DDR4, MIPI, SD/SD Express”.

The mention of SD Express, a new upcoming standard line of microSD cards from Samsung, has led some to speculate that the next Nintendo hardware will support it. The theory is that Nintendo wants a higher transfer speed for microSD cards. The current line’s average transfer speed is 60MB per second, and the highest you can currently get is the 150MB per second from a 1.5TB SanDisk SDXC card. Samsung is claiming that SD Express cards will be able to reach transfer speeds as high as 800MB per second, something that Nintendo’s new console will really need as video games continue to get larger in size.

    1. Why would this not matter? To reduce costs of making the hardware, it probably won’t have a lot of storage space on the platform. For those of us that play mostly digital games that also aren’t lucky enough to live in a Google Fiber area, its very convenient to have expandable storage to have all the games on the platform at all times. Plus, as a handheld, for those that play on the go (assuming its another hybrid), its also nice to have that extra storage to keep all games on the platform.

This is a huge win, assuming the rumor is true. This was one of the biggest worries for me wanting to move at least half of my Switch games to the new platform and still have room for Switch 2 games.

    2. What do you mean it doesn’t matter…? If that’s what you think, then it sounds like you comprehended none of this.

Faster transfer speeds is a HUGE win, allowing for larger amounts of data to be processed in real time… but I suppose you’re just complacent and are okay with persistent loading screens.

  1. What’s insane to me is when the Switch launched, I remember 64GB – 128GB Micro SD Cards being the best and highest capacity ones you could get. Now, I have a 1.5TB Micro SD Card in my Switch, and it’s absolutely insane (and worth every penny tbh, I have like a bajillion games)

I’m curious, however. By the time we get to the Switch 2 where we are now with the Switch, what storage capacity will look like by then? Maybe I’ll be rocking a 10TB Micro SD Card or something lol, because that’ll be like, $80 – $120 bucks by the time I get one. Technology really is insane. I remember when 32 – 64 GB SD cards were the biggest you could get. And when 2 – 4 GB of storage was insane. Now I feel old lol

    1. Not anymore they aint if the next Switch has any way to be able to play more modern games.
The current Micro SD platform can only be nearly as fast as your typical HDD, which those are already starting to phase out.
If the system has any chance to keep its pace for the next 5 to 7 yrs, then it will need this new Express format. Since those speeds will roughly close to a SATA SSD storage speed.

There is more to it than just “faster loading times” when it comes to storage tech.

  2. False – Nintendo always built their consoles relativly cheap . Remember what NX was able to do ( according to leaks from the past ) ?

  3. My switch micro got ******* and I never used the kick stand or removed it. He given me trouble with NSO and Epic Games. Constantly getting corrupted. This is on a summer 2017 model.

    1. Why does speed equal more memory? I’m lost there. Transfer rate? Transferring data never seemed slow. If this somehow means more memory for same price then great.

  4. I honestly didnt buy a new larger SD card just recently for my switch, because I knew this romur from a long time ago.
    Are you sure its new?

  5. “Nintendo consoles are not cheap” thank you for this laugh…

Totally useless rumor and it doesn’t look far in the end… well no “as usual” rather
It doesn’t make me hot or cold, all that

As they say, all we have to do is wait

  6. Just for Clarification, because some of you seemed to have skip reading the post. The rumor said that the new switch would support Micro SD Express card. This isn’t internal memory, so even if the rumor is true, this wouldn’t affect production. These new express cards are just external memory. Just like you can put a regular Micro SDHC and SDXC. The problem with these is that even if you have download speed of (let’s say) 1000MB/s, your car will still bottle neck it to 90MB/s. These new express card (which look like regular Micro SD cards) will be able to transfer speed to upto 600MB/s. Keep in mind, there like 4 different classes, and the higher more expensive one is the only one with transfer rates of 600MB/s

Now my only complain with these is that they only go up to 256GB, for now. So let’s hope we get higher capacity ones by the time the switch releases … If this rumor is indeed true, which if they keep the micro format, I hope it is.

  7. There are numerous errors in this article regarding Samsung, especially “SD Express, a new upcoming standard line of microSD cards from Samsung”. SD Express is a new SD standard and has nothing to do with Samsung.
