Doug Bowser: US tariffs didn’t impact Nintendo Switch 2 original $449.99, now assessing “what the impact may be”

Nintendo of America president, Doug Bowser

Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser has confirmed that the pricing before Trump introduced his amended trade tariffs for countries was not factored into the original $449.99 price point of the Nintendo Switch 2 system. Nintendo previously said pre-orders for the long-awaited system were going to go live in the United States on 9th April, but has now admitted that the pre-order date will be pushed back in the USA due to Trump’s tariffs. It’s not clear how much this will affect the current $449.99 price point.

      1. Yeah. After the Switch 2 price was revealed on Nintendo website, some fans still believe that they won’t be able to pay much increase on the Switch 2 price with interest in Nintendo’s console market. Their stock market has already increased as of last month. After Trump has announced his Tariffs that will effect globally to each countries, things has started to go a bit higher now because of him. We all know that he is going to make the country much worse then last time he became president the first time.

        1. Well you clearly don’t have a brain…

12 of the last 16 years were all Democrat-led so the country being in a bad situation right now is because of them. Trump’s first 4 years he was bullied and gatekept by the Democrats too, barely having time to accomplish anything because they kept him tied up with nonsensical bullshit. They blamed him for COVID despite him shutting down all trade with China before it happened, called him a racist so he reopened the borders, then the scamdemic started. During his time we had the lowest unemployment rate in decades, higher wages, no new wars, and tons of other great things happening until Biden (a racist who served under domestic terrorist Obama) reversed it all.

It still amazes me how morons who view politics with emotions can’t see the truth. Tariffs are a good thing, we did this before to get out of Britain’s rule and we came out the superior country for it. Now we’re doing the same thing to bolster our economy again so we don’t become enslaved to another country. The Kammunist, Harris, would have sold us to China so if you support communism then please, go live in one of those countries. You won’t leave though because you know the freedoms you enjoy here are not recognized in those places and you’ll be forced into a life of servitude.

Start using your brain, the rest of the country did and voted for Trump.

          1. Nah I never voted for him you stupid clown and I never once did. I still dislike the man himself. He failed to make any promises about making America great again which he OBVIOUSLY, failed to do that important did. Now he mentioned the same line again about making the US great again. I can’t wait to see how much he will embarrassed himself over his Tariff announcement and trying to raise the living price for his own gesture.

Go back to school or go to the library to get a dictionary kiddo.

            1. I am not going to throw crap at anyone but the way you insult people makes one think that the whole hacker comments are just an excuse so you can go away scott free when your arguments go south or when you forget to comment with a sock puppet, the whole hacker thing is baloney.

          2. Wow. How old are you? There is no way you’re an functional adult and just typed that all out and actually did research or even looked at an article.

          3. Yeah buddy, I’m sure the economy crashing in 2008 was because of Bill Clinton who was out of office for 8 years by then, and the economy recovering during Obama’s presidency was because of Bush’s actions. You’re so smart.

          4. How did democrats make this happen? Last I checked the economy was doing great under Biden and the only things Republicans could complain about was high prices on gas and eggs. Now gas and eggs are going down but Americans just lost 6 trillion dollars in stocks over a few days. The pandemic also started under Trump so who is the scammer now? Also the average unemployment was lower in Bidens term than during Trumps. And there were no new wars under Biden either. Talk about being amazed at how morons can’t see the Truth. It’s available for all of us to see, yet you remain blinded by loyalty to a dictator. Go to Russia, they like people like you.

            1. Are you serious? The economy was not good in the Biden years. I suspect you don’t have to pay for your own groceries and gas.

      2. Except it’s not. I hope you don’t have any other console/PC because they’re all more expensive. Gaming is a luxury, not a right, and it’s cheaper than its ever been.

  1. Oh gee, so it looks like they were getting greedy. I would like to know the actual cost to manufacture the system, as that will ultimately determine whether they’re pulling a Nintendo 3DS situaiton here or not.

    1. I’ll save you the trouble and look at the history of Nintendo where they literally never sold consoles at a lost, not even when the Wii U flopped. Also retarded to price a console close or only slightly higher than BoM, which doesn’t include R&D and software/system cost.

            1. Nintendo is the least greedy of all game companies. Again, please do some research and use your brain because all you’ve shown is you have hot takes with nothing to back it up.

        1. Because, sony and Microsoft sells their consoles at a loss, they’d rather eat some of the cost to manufacture if it means more units are sold, but make up the costs by locking the users into their consoles ecosystems. They make money when you sign up for PS+ or Xbox Live and spend money on there. Nintendo typically has sold their consoles at a profit, though not by a huge amount, aside from the 3DS. So, if the Switch 2 is relatively close in price with it’s manufacturing cost, then we can assume they’re trying to be fair in terms of pricing, but if they’re taking a loss, even if it’s a little bit, then we know that $450 is the best they could do.

  2. The tariffs the US is applying to Japan is 24%. Just adding the tariffs to the $450 or $500 Switch 2 bundles would increase the price of them by $108 and $120 respectively.

    1. Anonymous Skywalker

Don’t forget about the tariffs that were already imposed by Japan to the USA long before the USA tariffs.

    2. The tariffs are placed based on where the product was manufactured. So even if it’s a Japanese company, that’s not where it was manufactured, so those tariffs don’t apply.

        1. It applies to anyone with everything that’s being imported.

Let’s say Nintendo had 2 manufacturing plants.
One in China and the other in Taiwan.

Both shipments would cost differently because of where they came from. It doesn’t matter if the product is from Nintendo who is based in Japan, tariffs are placed on who imports based on where it was manufactured.

Same thing applies to any company, let’s say Ford imported headlights from China, it doesn’t matter that Ford is an American company, if it’s importing stuff from China, then FORD pays for those tariffs because it came from China.

Same with Sega, Sony, and anyone else that has hardware or games that gets imported.

  3. My initial thought was that it was too expensive. However, other handhelds like Steam Deck cost $400, and they have a dock for themselves that they don’t include in the package. There is no bundle, and the dock that they sell is $70, so that means if you want the Steam Deck with the dock, it would be $470. Looking at that through that perspective made be respect the $449.99 a bit more.

    1. It’s also more powerful than current Steam Deck. But I’m sure when Steam Deck 2 out it will match or even exceed the Switch 2 slightly at higher price. Typical tech progression.

    2. 450$ plus 50$ for the camara plus 4$-35$ monthly/yearly fees to be aloud to use it and playonline with ppl plus 10$-15$ upgrade fees for switch games you already have and 70-80$ for a cartidge that dosent have the game on it and also you gotta deal with nintendos lovely prices in general. zelda botw is over 8 years old now and they still refuse to sell it lower then 40$/£ x-x

btw have the switch 2 specs been revealed yet? i realy dought its stronger then a steam deck

      1. At the end of the day, Metroid Prime can run 4k/60 fps and 1080p/120 fps. There are very few games on the SD that can perform that well. The problem with comparing pure specs between the SD and Switch always comes down to optimization. It’s always going to be harder for developers to optimize games on the SD as opposed to the Switch.

Moreover, we do know for a fact that the Switch 2’s screen is definitely more specced out than the base SD.

      2. I watched “WULFF DEN”‘s video where he was able to attend the Switch 2 experience, and explain the power comparison with Steam Deck and ROG Ally, it’s a good watch. I will admit what you mentioned can be a lot to spend, but you can always hold out on getting those options. Also, I hope Nintendo announces a discount program like the Gold Points one. The only reason I got some games was due to that.

      3. It’s a chip made “specially” for Nintendo and knowing Nvidia it can mean a lot of things… Like for example taking an “old” SoC but adding recent chips, they have already done it for Sony and Microsoft so why not now?

But when you read what Nvidia says, you can be confused: they talk about 10 times better graphics performance than the switch, but what does that mean? taking into account the DLSS, the raytracing or neither of the 2?

Similarly the “new RT cores”, it means that “they put those of the RTX 5XXX?!

Nvidia sometimes exaggerates on the substance but not on the form, the switch 1 would be unable to run a single switch 2 game

In the end, it’s quite unclear, we’ll have to wait for Digital Foundry (among others) to test it when it comes out

      4. You threw in a bunch of garbage to inflate your bias among your constant misspelling so nothing in your argument can be taken seriously. The S2 can produce 4k images, it can play games at 120fps, that’s all the specs any real gamer needs since graphics are the LEAST important factor to any game.

        1. i fail to see how its garbage and bias’d. they say steam deck costs more cuz of additional fees. i pointed out nintendos additional fees.

and i couldnt care less about 4k and 120fps

  4. People writing about the steam deck, it’s manufactured in China and the price is going up on it too due to the tariffs. The problem for Nintendo is they moved manufacturing to Vietnam to avoid China tariffs only for Vietnam to get hit with a 46% tariff which takes affect on Wednesday. There’s a lot of talks with the Vietnam situation, so it’s really wise Nintendo didn’t open the door to preorders and are waiting to see how this all shakes out.

      1. They probably were, as most Nintendo fans are incredibly intelligent. The majority of the country voted for him btw, so you factor in how many Switches have been sold, how long Nintendo’s been around, and you start to see your baseless argument is simply that.

    1. We will, and the country will be better for it. Gaming is a luxury, not a right. Besides, the country is currently a shit show but that’s entirely thanks to the Democrats who led 12 of the last 16 years! Amazing how simple facts blows your entire emotional nonsense away!

  5. The pause is because Nintendo doesn’t know if US retailers are going to buy (import) as many consoles as before due to tariffs. The tariffs may not even happen because negotiations with many countries are ongoing. The idea that tariffs will cause the price to jump 25% on their own is fear mongering BS.

  6. Very expensive, at least 569€, thanks to nordic exclusive supplier Bergsala which takes a big cut
-Very expensive games and accessories. Are you kidding me, 1st party controllers like 100€, at least 90. 80€ the base price for “big games” when physical?
    -No gold points or vouchers?
-No hall effect sticks or something else to alleviate potential stick drift problems? Happened to me too.
-No eShop music as an option
-Can I share my account and it’s games with other people like with Switch?
-Still not possible to get refunded if the game sucks and you’re stuck with “digital junk”.

This might increase sales too because you could try out freely before making the final decision.

All of these decisions, Nintendo’s greediness and price gouging is pushing me and many others away, leaves a bad taste in mouth. Good luck selling multiple Switch 2’s for normal families too.

Nintendo is a business, yes, but they are trying to squeeze out every penny possible their (sometimes too faithful) customers are willing to pay. Business can be fair, but still lucrative.

If they are successful with these prices, you can be sure they raise them even more and some of these lemmings come up with more excuses for Daddy Nintendo. If enough people say enough is enough, they will change some things.

I have bought every Nintendo home system since the GameCube, but Switch 2 might be the first one I don’t buy, at least not close to launch since those things I mentioned, I’ll have to see how things really are, how they progress.

Steam Deck 2 is looking more and more enticing. I’m not the only loyal customer on the fence. By the time Steam Deck 2 releases, I think my questions have been answered and then make the decision.
