Former PlayStation boss reacts to Switch 2 game price increases

Unfortunately for Nintendo, the pricing for the Nintendo Switch 2 and its software has not had the greatest reception from fans. Not only have fans reacted to the news that has been ongoing since the Switch 2 Direct, but familiar faces that used to work at Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony have been doing the same. One of them is former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden.

Layden’s reaction to the higher Switch 2 game prices came from a PlayerDriven video interview. In it, Layden says that “right here you see, ‘wow, that’s kind of a hefty price hike from Switch 1 to Switch 2 and, wow, 80 bucks for a game?’ But if it’s the only place where you can play Mario, then you get your wallet out and you buy into it… and Donkey Kong and Zelda. That first-party exclusivity kind of mitigates the sticker shock, if you will, of these price hikes, because you want that content so bad”. You can see the video interview in full down below.

    1. $80 for whats essentially a Ps4 game that’s a non special ed? Hard pass on this entire Nintendo generation. So glad I don’t have kids to complain to buy this garbage.

  1. The pricing hasn’t had the greatest reception from fans, i couldn’t tell by all the “drop the price” post.

  2. See, Nintendo actually releases finished games (aside from Gamefreak). That’s a huge value compared to other companies that release unfinished, unpolished games with editions that let you play the game “3 days early” (really you’re just paying to NOT play it 3 days late).

As a gamer, my biggest interest is literally playing the video game. It’s not talking about games, reviewing games, circlej-ing games, modding games, or competing in esports. I just really like to play the games… and Nintendo is like in the top 3 of game companies that deliver quality in that category consistently. It’s as simple as that.

    1. Most games release finished… its just a handful of big ones that don’t that make it seem like they don’t. Shows me you don’t play many games as a nintendo fanboy…

      1. “Just a handful of big ones” is already too much… and the worst offenders. A higher price tag should be indicative of higher quality and value. They aren’t cheap indie games with small budgets. They are multimillion dollar projects from major studios. They are the LAST games that should be buggy or unfinished.

The fact that you can’t agree with that fact shows that it’s such a commonplace issue that you’ve already accepted it as par for the course.

    2. I wouldn’t call Mario Strikers, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, or Nintendo Switch Sports finished games.

    3. yeah but 80 dollars? i know first party nintendo games are pure quality, but how much is nintendo gonna raise the price of these games? and you gotta consider the fact that nintendo games never go on sale, breath of the wild is still 60 dollars after like 9 years.

      1. Mario Kart World is $80 whereas DK Bananza is $70. I think 70 is the new baseline and 80 is the exception, kind of like how TOTK was the exception at 70.

I think a $10 price increase for the next generation of games is reasonable, all things considered.

  3. And Layden is 100% correct. True exclusives have that much power, unlike almost anything on Playstation nowadays.

  4. I think this is actually the first time we’ve seen a BASE edition of a game go for $80 (when I say “base” I mean the most basic package, not like a Deluxe Edition or Master Edition that we’ve seen games like Street Fighter 6 or Lego 2K Drive or even Sonic X Shadow Generations do). When I saw MKW for $80 I thought it was a typo, but it apparently isn’t.

Why, Nintendo? Why are YOU the ones leading the way to $80+ games!?

    1. You’re probably getting this confused. Games by Nintendo are typically pure quality but if you’re going to throw a Mario Party or some spinoff in there, games made by teams that aren’t considered Nintendo (like GameFreak), then that tells me you either lack the education to make this claim or are so biased this simple fact will decimate you and cause you to fly off the handle in a feeble attempt to prove your flimsy point. Here’s a good example of someone like you; ever since Spider-Man 2 became a multiplat, people have been foaming at the mouth, bitching at Insomniac for the low quality port. For starters, PC sucks and nearly every big game launches with trouble because nobody has a unified system, but more importantly Insomniac didn’t even do the fucking port! Spider-Man 2 is rife with quality, even with the bugs every game inevitably will experience, Insomniac is a great team! The team who did the port though, Nixxes, appears to have rushed it and cut corners.

  5. SONY increased the PS5/PS5 Pro’s price by 25% TODAY.
What a strange, contradictory thing to say when there’s an indistry-wide price increase happening.

  6. The console is priced like every console of the last two decades has been, nothing to complain about there. As for Mario Kart … Buy the bundle where it’s $50 more. As for that ONE game currently being $80, it’s Mario Kart, most of you are still playing MK8D. If you don’t find $80 to be worth it for that type of longevity then anti-consumer garbage like anti-consumer-pass has devalued gaming so much you lack any respect for it. Gaming has never been cheaper, and if you don’t realize that then you’re too young to complain.

As for Nintendo games “never” dropping in price, this is a good thing. It shows Nintendo values their games and believes in the quality. They also don’t release a trilogy of them every generation, which is why their games have tails. You’re complaining because they don’t pump out sequel after sequel, and any intelligent individual wouldn’t drop the price of a product that continues to sell.

Finally, this trend of insulting Nintendo fans is utterly pathetic. You treat us like we don’t know anything about gaming but the majority of Xbox gamers (and journalists) haven’t realized yet that Xbox went 3rd party in 2017 and hasn’t had an exclusive since 2015. Two very obvious facts, one of which Phil himself announced on stage at E3 2017. Most people on PS/PC/Xbox are casual hobbyists, who think GTA and CoD is worth playing, or is stuck on anti-consumer GAAS titles like Destiny or Marvel Rivals. These are gamers, yet they’ll call themselves hardcore and make fun of Nintendo fans. I play my PlayStation more than my Nintendo in a lot of cases, but I absolutely stand up for Nintendo when I see nothing wrong and there’s nothing wrong here, you’re all just entitled crybabies who want games to be even more devalued than Xbox has created a market for.

  7. None of this makes any sense. I heard that electronics (which most likely includes video games) won’t be affected by the tariffs after all. Why am I always hearing something different?

If the Switch 2 console and games end up costing even more than what I’ve already heard ($450 for the console and $80 for SOME of the games), then that buries the Switch 2 for me. It’s guaranteed that I’ll never buy it. Only idiots that want to go in debt on a credit card will buy it. Heck, I can’t even GET a credit card. And maybe that’s for the best.

  8. This just goes to show that business leaders don’t know anything about running businesses and are just reactionary. If it would have been him releasing games for that price, he would be conducting interviews justifying the price hike. See kids, we can all shoot for a chair on the table :D!
