The Nikkei: Nintendo Switch 2 in line for 145% tariff hit

The Nikkei is reporting this morning that the looming trade war will see the Nintendo Switch 2 hit with a 145% in tariffs when it launches on 5th June. This won’t just affect Nintendo as all major gaming companies rely in part on production from China. Sony announced today that the cost of the PlayStation 5 is due to increase in certain parts of the world including Europe.

“According to an internal assessment memo by a major Apple and Nintendo supplier seen by Nikkei Asia, game consoles are still subject to a 145% U.S. tariff on goods made in China, which means products like Nintendo’s highly anticipated new console are in line for a massive hit.”

    1. Wishful thinking. They won’t miss their chance to jump early on and slap a higher launch price, even if it didn’t affect that initial batch of consoles. They are a company at the end of the day.

  1. On the bright side we don’t have to worry about scalpers and them running out of stock because no one will be able to afford the Switch 2, we can just charge it on a credit card.

  2. And surprise surprise looking at Sony’s announcement, Europeans will be subsidising some of the costs of the tariffs for Americans.

  3. This is false information. Are some switches made in china? Yes! Are any of the switches made in china going to the united states? Thats a negative. All nintendo switches manufactured and then imported to the united states all come from Vietnam. It doesn’t matter what each system part is made from where. It’s all assembled in Vietnam. Pretty sure this is misinformation to get people riled up.

  4. But they were making them in Vietnam to avoid this scenario specifically. I don’t think the China Tariff will hit Switch 2 coming to the U.S.

  5. Two things 1:production for switch2 happens in vietnam not in china
2: donald trump has already came out and put an exemption on all electronics, smartphones and electronical devices/components meaning they won’t be under the umbrella of tariffs. So if the prices were raised at this point, it would be out of
    Choice not necessity

  6. Honestly happy for every hardship that Americans suffer. Reap what you sow. You voted for this so you deserve nothing but the worst

    1. Except it’s not a hardship. I’m not suffering. If I can’t afford it, I won’t buy it. If this is what it takes to steer America back on course instead of kicking the can down the road, I’m on board 1000%. We were on a sinking ship. Trump is correcting course, but it’s gonna sting a little at first while we patch up the holes. Try some critical thinking first before blindly following the rest of the sheep and their moronic, uneducated assumptions.

  7. It may be a little iffy still at this stage. Word has it that there may be loopholes for some products to get around tariff hikes. Such as a possibility that they may remove excess tariffs for Smartphones and computers, which a Nintendo switch 2 could qualify as a computer (unless they specify which computer like electronics in their tariff rules, like specifying a list of brands or get specific about which types of computers).

  8. I guess that will move more Xbox hardware won’t it? Buy American, eh? PlayStation was smarter the last Trump administration. PlayStation was based out of California but, now I guess they moved it to Europe or some bull like that. Move it to the U.S. Move it to Texas and leave it there and put an American businessman running it. It’s not that difficult
