Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade pricing revealed

Nintendo has confirmed the pricing of the already announced Nintendo Switch 2 Edition game upgrades. The Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Super Mario Party Jamboree upgrade packs for the Nintendo Switch 2 will be available for $19.99 / £16.99. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrades for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom are priced at $9.99 / £7.99. It seems the more work done on the upgrades, the higher the purchase cost.

  1. Ah. Unfortunate, but that Kirby DLC does look delicious… same for Mario Party, so I don’t mind too much. $14.99 would have been the sweet spot, but this isn’t too bad

      1. Okay… what we saw doesn’t bring anything, it’s just a gimmick…
But the thing I’d like to know: are these updates mandatory to be able to play them on the new Switch …?

            1. It’s common knowledge that Switch 2 plays 99% of Switch games out of the box, including all Nintendo games. The Switch 2 versions of the Zelda games are for the added extras. You don’t need to pay to simply play Switch games on Switch 2.

            2. Hi, I saw your question and thought I could help. Nintendo’s official site confirms it: https://www.nintendo.com/us/gaming-systems/switch-2/transfer-guide/compatible-games/

“In addition to Nintendo Switch™ 2 games, Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released on the Nintendo Switch™ system.”

And there is another source: https://www.nintendo.com/us/gaming-systems/switch-2/transfer-guide/

“In addition to Nintendo Switch 2 games, Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games that have been released on Nintendo Switch.”

              1. I already knew but we’re not talking about the same thing…that the games are compatible, it’s true but not all the games are “switch 2 edition”… so I still don’t have any answers ^^’

                1. It is pretty explicit when it says: “Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games that have been released on Nintendo Switch.”

It literally tells it plays games released on Nintendo Switch, in other words, the Nintendo Switch version, the original version.

                2. When they say “compatible” they mean games from the original Nintendo Switch that can be played on the Nintendo Switch 2 without issues. For example, the Nintendo Labo VR can’t be played on Nintendo Switch 2 because the console is bigger than the first Nintendo Switchb and it can’t fit in the cardboard holder. There are other games that doesn’t boot or have performance problems and Nintendo is investigating to make them playable in the future.

Here is the link for the compatibility list: https://www.nintendo.com/us/gaming-systems/switch-2/transfer-guide/compatible-games/

                  1. That’s not what I’m asking…^^, I already know all this so I’ll try to explain again…
We have compatible games and among these we have “switch 2 edition”, my question is to know if the update of these “switch 2 edition” is mandatory to be able to play them despite the basic compatibility?

The nuance is important because it would mean that you would have to pay again to play games you already own while you wouldn’t necessarily want to upgrade to the “switch 2 edition”

                    Is it clearer?^^

                    1. I understood what you said. I’m literally telling you that the Switch 2 can play games from the original Nintendo Switch. The “Switch 2 Editions” are just extras — optional upgrades, not mandatory.

It’s just like how PS4 games are playable on the PS5. You can play the regular PS4 version normally, and if you want, you can upgrade to the enhanced PS5 version. But it’s completely optional.

      2. It was reported that, “NSO Expansion members can simply download the upgrades for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom into their Switch 2 systems for free from launch day onward.” But it is being sold separately for people who don’t want NSO.

  2. Well, I kept an eye on the price of the Wii stuffs and thought twice, before I bought a game or an accesory, but I feel like I have to think three times at Switch 2, before I buy something. I know, price went high and inflation is even higher worldwide, but this…

  3. New kirby level should also be released for Switch. Doesn’t look like it needs all that power, we’ll see but I doubt it. If they are making it Switch 2 exclusive that would be lame. If they released on both though it would be unfair to charge the same price for both versions.

  4. I already have NSO so I get the BotW and TotK upgrades as part of the package, but if I didn’t, I’d have a hard time justifying a $10 upcharge for an 8-year-old game when all it adds is 60FPS and a slight bump in graphical fidelity.

  5. @Endisend

Nintendo isn’t Sony, so the comparison isn’t possible.
I’d rather wait before giving away my Switch then ^^ But thanks for answering me!

  6. So correct me if am wrong, I read the other day, that the variable refresh, is being removed? The switch 2 has a downgraded screen? From oled to led?….

So we paying to upgrade what exactly?…
