Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined producer tried to convey “cuteness” of Akira Toriyama’s designs while retaining “atmosphere”

The long-awaited Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is finally available on multiple formats including the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The JRPG features a unique art style with diorama-style designs and cute doll character designs, which have gone down fairly well with fans of the franchise. Speaking to Games Radar Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined producer Takeshi Ichikawa said that the did their utmost to retain the legendary Akira Toriyama’s unique designs without compromising on the game’s “atmosphere.”

“The original Dragon Quest 7 was defined by Akira Toriyama’s designs, featuring charming, stylized characters,” said Ichikawa. “We considered how to convey that cuteness while still capturing the game’s unique atmosphere.”

“At the same time, we discovered that movies and games featuring doll motifs were well-received globally, which inspired us to combine this concept with Dragon Quest 7’s character designs,” he said. “We felt this approach would create a visually appealing style, leading to our decision to move forward with the hand-crafted aesthetic.”

  1. It looks great but I’m so disappointed they didn’t do more to streamline this game. There are so many parts that involve just going to a certain NPC or travelling back and forth to certain areas just for the sake of it that really could have been cut out. It’s a shame because I like the game up to a point and then it just never seems to end and outstays it’s welcome.
