One of the long-standing traditions for some users is to name yourself or your rivals something naughty to provide endless amusement in the older Pokemon games. This tradition has now been brought to a close in the recently released Pokemon FireRead and Pokemon LeafGreen. Kotaku tried to name its champion and some of the rivals naughty names and found the game simply won’t let you. Kotaku spent probably hours trying to get past the censor and amusingly walked away largely unsuccessful. Pokemon FireRed and Pokemon LeafGreen are available now on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

This is a really stupid thing to censor. As far as I recall, rivals are only part of the single-player component of the games- they’re never brought up during trades, battles, or other communications with other players, so who outside of the user’s game file is going to see what they named their rival?
I could name my rival Btchballs McDckles and you’d never know unless I told you.

Could be just the Switch (2) keyboard software that has the censored words list baked in?

I caught a Jigglypuff and named it Jigglyhoe. Named my rival Turdboy. Also named a Piggy after my friends nickname and called it Natetard.
This is why we hate Hop on pokemon sword and shield. We can’t name him. I was gonna call him buttface.
I usually use anime names like Jinwoo, Sukuna or Katsuki, something I know isn’t considered as inappropriate and don’t make a fuss about censors.

I remember when I was a young teenager I was playing a YuGiOh game and wanted to name a deck with the word dragon in it. It wouldn’t let me because it had the word drag in it, lol. My friend and I tried every curse word and dirty word we could think of to see how many words were censored and it was a staggering number of words. Almost every dirty word we came up with was banned in that game.
But no multiple save files? Could offer a rewind mode too. Just dumb.
