Japan: Pokemon Company considering authentication via government IDs to battle TCG scalping

Pokemon Trading Card Game is as popular as it has ever been and because of this it has been a prime target for scalpers buying up and selling the cards at inflated prices. The Pokemon Company has been making plans to put a stop to this and is considering requiring official government identity verification for access to certain products and events in Japan. This could come into effect by August and would rely on My Number Cards, which are Japan’s government issued ID cards for purchases.

“According to The Pokémon Company, the system will apply to priority product lotteries, sales of certain products on Pokémon Center Online, as well as participation in select official tournaments and events held within Japan.

As for how this will work, the company intends to have users authenticate their Trainer Club accounts by scanning their My Number Cards via smartphone using an external service. It promises not to acquire or store people’s personal ID numbers in the process.”

  1. I wish I could battle Klara on pokemon shield instead of stupid ugly Avery. I hate Avery just as much as pokemon card scalpers.
