Devil May Cry creator reveals how Devil May Cry started as a Resident Evil game

Devil May Cry creator and all round legendary developer, Hideki Kamiya, has revealed how the original Devil May Cry game started out as a Resident Evil game for Capcom. Kamiya says that Devil May Cry started with a mandate of creating a new Resident Evil game, as the series popularity spiked worldwide. He said that during the game’s development the team kept coming up with “all sorts of new concepts and things we wanted to build on” and eventually the project split from the Resident Evil series and turned into the acclaimed Devil May Cry which released in 2001 on the PlayStation 2.

“A lot of people know the story behind “Devil May Cry” (2001), but that one started off as a mandate to create another entry for ‘Resident Evil’ due to how popular it was internationally.

‘Resident Evil’ was a game for the original PlayStation, but the next game was going to be on the PlayStation 2, so we started coming up with all sorts of new concepts and things we wanted to build on, and that eventually morphed into ‘Devil May Cry.’”
