Automaton recently spoke to the acclaimed Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 team about a range of topics and one thing brought up was the demand for a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game. The team say they are interested in bringing it to the Nintendo Switch 2 but it would be a “big technical challenge” due to the system being less powerful than the other formats. This is also problematic due to the size of the studio, but it is something they will consider as Unreal improves.
I think your fans are quite curious about a Switch 2 version. Do you think Expedition 33 would be able to run on the Switch 2? And do you have any such plans at the moment?
Guillaume Broche: We are interested in looking for a way to do it, but it’s too early for us to announce anything at this point.
Tom Guillermin: It’s a big technical challenge because we tried to do something beautiful with the game, but of course, the Switch 2 is not as powerful as the PlayStation or the Xbox Series X. So, it’s an important thing for us to consider, especially given the size of our studio.
Do you think Unreal Engine 5 is also a challenge when trying to bring Expedition 33 to the Switch 2?
Guillaume Broche: Yes, a lot of features don’t work on Switch 2.
Alan Reynaud: They’re introducing features like Lumen Lite now, which is easier to run than the standard Lumen, but these things take time to roll out, so we’ll have to consider the updates coming from Unreal Engine to determine what to do.

But it’s just a bit weaker than a Series S, which the game runs and looks great on. Why not use that version as a baseline like Capcom does?
The Switch 2 CPU is quite a bit less powerful than Series S, while it may have a decent graphics chip for a low end device a good CPU is certainly still needed for games heavy on calculations or physics etc.. This is why some games are still targeting 30-40FPS and even have dips below that during action.
Switch 2 is not suited to games that are heavy on the hardware.
PC is getting close to maxing out raster performance, I mean look at the RTX 4090, still the second best GPU and it’s a beast years later, it’s all about frame rates and ray tracing now, and consoles are still behind to some extent, especially on the CPU side. That said, the Series X and PS5 are great for moderately demanding games, but even they will likely struggle with some next-gen software like GTA 6 (prob 30FPS).
Nintendo needs to focus on their first party games and bring back some classics, not recycle and rehash the same stuff like they keep doing. I’m not too hopeful given they screwed up some of the voices on the Star Fox 64 remake though, sounds as if some of the bosses are bored rather than excited to fight.
Bro, they brought back donkey Kong, Kirby air riders, and star fox. I think they doing good at bringing back classics.
But once again: the CPU doesn’t do everything, ESPECIALLY for a console!! In terms of raw power, the Switch 2 and the Series S are similar. Add to that that the Switch 2 has more RAM than the Series S and features that the Series S doesn’t have.
Stop bringing everything back to the CPU, you’re clearly way too simplistic!
And to say Nintendo should only focus on its classics is nonsense—say that to Capcom too, who is making awesome ports on the Switch 2..
raw power numbers don’t mean anything… look how they have to downgrade and optimize more for switch 2.
you have to look at cpu for those games and extra ram won’t help you
Uhh, the switch 2 has so much stuff crammed into it. DLSS, HDR, VRR, 4K, and 120FPS. These little features help boost the video output to be sharper then the series s. Just look at Indiana jones between switch 2 and Xbox series s. Go find the digital foundry video for that game, it’s honestly really impressive.
Another thing to consider is programmers have had potentially 6 1/2 years access to the XBOX series S and X to learn how to get the best out of it whereas the still probably still learning how to get the best out with a switch 2 which is potentially what a year and a half old I remember when the original switch was released they said they would never get Doom Eternal to run on it how wrong they were as that game is considered to be one of the best technical achievements from the Nintendo switch and the older the console got the much better the games looked and became because programmers learnt how to push the machine to its limits after experiment in with previous projects and games. So in a nutshell it’s still quite early days for the switch 2
I honestly don’t care for “miracle ports” the game is not impressive to look at on the Switch, there’s obviously a lot of clueless people here.
Hardware does matter, and while having the best matters less than it used to, consoles still have some catching up to do. And handhelds are even more behind. Granted that doesn’t mean they can’t have good games that run well, just don’t expect much from the demanding multiplats that would look and run much better on a good mid range PC let alone another console vs the Switch or Switch 2.
WTF? The game is a turn based RPG. Final Fantasy Rebirth which is an Action RPG works beautifully on Switch 2, why wouldn’t this?
Doesn’t it run on the steam deck?
Maybe contact the FF7 Rebirth SW2 porter, thats a UE5.
Considering natethehate confirmed it’s going to be released this year, part of me wonders if this is just them talking about bumps in the road they’ve had during the porting process, while of course not being able to confirm whether it’s coming or not since it hasn’t been formally announced. I mean, worst case scenario they definitely have the money to subcontract and have another studio assist in porting it. I’m sure for a smaller studio getting used to rhe architecture it isn’t as easy of a process as they expected, but I’m sure it’ll come out (or at least be announced) this year

Yeah I played it on steamdeck and it was great. I don’t see how this is the case but idk.
Doc if it runs on Steam Deck, it should run without any problem on Switch 2, the Steam Deck is nothing compared to it.
This game gave me motion sickness. I quit after an hour. Unreal engine 5 sucks
Couldnt get the AI to do it for them huh?
only way i play this game is if its on switch 2 ngl lol
wanted a steam deck but not with that price increase.
