The Swedish branch of retailer GAME is currently listing the Wii U GamePad for a fairly hefty £135. UK online retailer Shopto has already priced the Wii U console at £279. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime firmly believes that Wii U will “represent an ongoing great value” and that people will be “pleasantly surprised”
“We want to launch at a price that’s going to represent an ongoing great value. How do we launch at a value that we’re going to be able to sustain for a long time? I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised, if you will, about the way we’re managing the value equation.”
The executive noted that despite Nintendo’s E3 focus on the Wii U’s innovative features, the company expects to meet core demands – but that the console’s more unique facets will prove their chops further down the track.
“What I’ve heard the fan community say is, ‘I want my Mario, I want my Zelda and I want the best of third party’ and that’s what we’re looking to bring to consumers,” he said.
“So in the end, the consumer choice is going to be once I buy my Wii U that satisfies my Nintendo cravings, cravings for all these other great multiplatform franchises, then what is the role of a competitive platform? And to me that is the million dollar question.”

:P
This would be a more than decent price for the console, slighly saddened by the game pad price (if it’s true).

I hope Nintendoland is sold as an in packaged game like WiiSports was. It just doesn’t seem like its worth a full retail buy, but does look interesting. :/
So $350 for US? But knowing Nintendo they won’t bother to change the price and we’ll get it for $279 as well. Hahaha.
That is with euros.
GBP is a totally different story.
That’s a fortune here, the Gamepad costs the same as a 3DS if this is true! No way in hell am I paying that! The console price is reasonable though.
I can see the price for the Gamepad, if the Wii U includes one then the price for the console is reasonable. But considering consoles like the Xbox 360 are easy to get under £200 nowdays.
They may end up doing a 3DS, lowing the price and having to offer users who bought early a gift, due to low sales.
no the low sales for Wii U would be showiing off games that are releasing 2 years later.
Look at E3 2010 Nintendo 3DS First Parties launching lineup you have:
Animal Crossing™
Kid Icarus™: Uprising
Mario Kart™
nintendogs™ + cats
Paper Mario™
PilotWings Resort™
Star Fox 64™ 3D
Steel Diver™
What we got at launch
PilotWings Resort™
Steel Diver™
nintendogs™ + cats
Despite that 3DS sales was low and third parties wasn’t any better besides Street Fighter.
Nintendo wanted to avoid that because in E3 2011 those games beside Luigi’s Mansion 2 that were shown was obvious.
Now let look at Wii U launch window:
Pikmin 3
New Super Mario Bros U
Lego City Undercover
Project P-100
Nintendo Land
Wii U™ Panorama View
Wii Fit U
Game & Wario
SiNG
Ninja Gaiden
That a WHOLE LOT BETTER than 3DS First Parties Launch and then third parties games from Ubisoft, EA, Sega, and Namco.
I hope £279 includes the console AND a controller…
It will, they already confirmed it so don’t worry
£62 for the Pro Controller? That’s not good value. You could get an Xbox/PS3 controller for cheaper.
As for the actual console, I feel they may do a 3DS and lower it halfway next year from poor sales, judging that you can get an Xbox 360 for under £200 easily.
Hmm that is quite a lot for the pro controller and it’d be a while before I get one.
However, why do people keep comparing it to the Xbox 360 price?? That is last gen, Wii U is next gen… so…..?
True, Thats like saying I can get a Nintendo 64, 4 Controllers and alot of good games for less than a used 360 with a game.
But the controller is not next gen in any sense of the word, so that isn’t an excuse.
PS1 controllers work on PS2, so….
game cube games work on wii, xbox games work on the 360….
Um…I see you are obviously mistaken. The official PS3 controller (not one of the cheap knockoffs) are currently $55. They started at $60 and didn’t lower the price until late 2011, early 2012. The official 360 wireless controller is currently $50 but also started at $60 and didn’t get lowered until late 2010, early 2011. And the only reason for this is the 360 was established over an entire year earlier than PS3. So yes it will start out around $60 as did the two consoles you stated.
Also this is a NEXT-gen system. You cannot compare the Wii U to the 360/PS3 especially since those systems have established bases and have already brought in reasonable revenue to allow lower prices. Trust me the Wii U will be a bargain compared to the Xbox 720 and PS4.
Hate to point this out, but £1 =/= $1. Anyway, the controller won’t cost £62 and I have no idea why GAME Sweden think it will. It will most likely not be anymore than £40.
Even if it’s worth a lot of money, it doesn’t mean people will buy it. Lots of people think Mercedes or Ferraris are worth it, but they don’t buy those either. Wake up, Nintendo!
well… thats because there are ALTERNATIVES to ferraris and mercedes, in this industry its either microsoft, nintendo or sony, wich all are pretty much the same (i know nintendo its the “underpowered” in terms of raw power, but you get the point)….
if you dont buy one of them, you dont buy… in cars, if you dont buy a Mercedes or a Ferrari, its because you can get a Honda, Subaru, Ford, etc… cars do relate to a certain income (high income –> costly cars, etc…) on consoles its pretty much every income has to adapt to the cost of the console, NOT the console to the income…
you analysis wasnt the best…
Well said my dear sir. Thumps up!!!!
279, with that controller, confirm old specs.
I would have paid even 399,449 for a powerful system.
Look I prefer gamplay to graphics but, come on, if this is a next gen system and if it has to stay for another 6-7 years… And also, power doesn’t mean only graphics but physics, IA, interaction and so on.
for the cost (i presume) of a PS4/720 you could get a PC TODAY that would be better than the next consoles, just saying (and most of the times, games are cheaper and steam does disscount every week, and im not talking about those shit M$ disscounts…)
I don’t have Windows on my PC. So I have to play games on consoles.
Well GAME is asking £50 for the games for Wii U but on ShopTo they are selling their stock of Wii U games for £33 which is a bargain, the console I can understand because of the system and the controller but please Nintendo, please tell me the system can play really amazing looking games
Will be unhappy if its over $300 US. NintendoLand would.be an amazing pack in game too. Or reduced price game bundled with a Wii remote like how Wii play was
If it does get bundled, I hope it would be with a Pro Controller, most people have 3 or 4 wii remotes already.
I wonder if it’s too far of a stretch to think they might bundle the new Mario Wii U game in with the system to offset the shock of the cost (if it is going to be high). Everyone be bundling nowadays :D
Well they did bundle Mario All-Stars together with the SNES so I don’t see why not
Uhm. They didn’t do that at launch, my friend.
Utube title:gunns wii u game pad fail:E3 coverage 2012 pretty much sums up other issues. Btw wii u games might cost 99 dollars according to gamestop EPIC FAIL
Never believe what you read on the internet troll.
$99 pricing is a place holder.
I am happy to spend whatever I can comfortably part with at the time of launch. Regardless of how the WiiU pans out in the long-run; There is no way in hell I am missing out on a brand new console by Nintendo. One day or another, WiiU WILL be mine for the pwning.
Its going to be 299.99$ its obvious
@backburner lol faggot ass tool also gamestop priced wii u games at 99 dollars DAMN IT WILL FAIL WORSE THAN VITA lol finnaly u fags will see nintendo cheapass lose nobody wants expensive trash
No body wants trash to begin with, and that’s what you are. Go drull somewhere else, troll.
Kinda expected this price. But based from what i’ve seen, £200 is the limit to what i’d spend on this current gen console. Too bad thier showing was so pathetic.
Who the hell said ”I want my Mario”? I’m tired of 1000 marios per year -_-
I think he meant the first party games… hopefully
Based on the price I think there WILL be a bundle game with the Wii U, otherwise it would be a bit stupid, and it would be good if it was the Mario U game or Nintendo Land. I think if it was Mario U that would be better in some ways, but it might discorrage me, and others, to buy Nintendo Land, whereas if Nintendo Land was a bundle game everyone/most people would still defo buy the Mario U game
Forget about Mario and Zelda, those will come eventually; I want
Battalion Wars
Fire Emblem (An actual console entry)
Star Fox
Metroid
Donkey Kong
Punch Out!
Earth Bound
Smash Bros.
etc.
Nintendo, you have so many franchises. Why don’t you focus on improving what they lack in quality to bring them up to the level of Mario and Zelda. It is such a waste of ideas to not dedicate as much effort into your other franchises. In my opinion no more than one or two (If the second entry really has something to offer that the last didn’t) entries per franchise should be present in any given console. It just cheapens the experience. “When you find honey, eat what is enough to you. Don’t eat so much that you will end up hating it and throwing it back up.”
This. All of it. Especially Metroid, Punch Out, and EarthBound. If any game gets a 2d HD remake, it better be Metroid. I think one 2d Metroid after a slew of 3d ones (especially after the last one) would be effin’ sweet. Especially with the uPad (no pausing and going through menus to see which door I need to go through or whether I’m in Brinstar or Norfair… okay I’d know regardless but still).
Give us a 2d HD sequel to Super Metroid (aka tied with Final Fantasy III in the SNES and A Link To The Past as the best games ever made), do it with that same fucking awesome moody/eerie/sometimes upbeat and futuristic music, same tight controls, same concept… just in HD, 3d character/boss models, rich visuals, and make it nice and loooonnnng ;)
I’d buy 2 Wii U’s if they did that. No joke.
@Icy Dead People: I can’t like this comment enough. ^This x infinty
smash bros wii u (universe) is confirmed
£135 for the WiiU pad…with the tech specs in the controller, over here in the USA, it’ll probably be worth around $80-$90. It seems about right to some extent. It is sort-of predicted that $299 USD is the starting price of the console anyway. At least it’s much, much cheaper than buying a PS3 & Vita for connectivity. Nintendoland and/or New Super Mario Bros. U should be choices of pack-in games.
Nintendo, as a company, is generally cost-effective and they’re NOT money hungry like the competition (Sony & Microsoft). Now, as a fan of Nintendo, I would NOT want to see WiiU end up like the 3DS at launch, but $80-$90 for the tablet controller sounds pretty reasonable I guess.
£1 is worth about $2, not £1 = $0.66
No it won’t. Look, the gamepad doesn’t do any processing or anything, it just streams from the console, which I’m sure everyone knows already because we found that out just before it was announced. But this means it doesn’t need all the components you’d expect something like the 3DS, by that logic it should be considerably cheaper to make than the 3DS. On top of that, they don’t have to cover all their development and advertising costs etc through the price of the controller, they do that through the Wii U itself. That means one of the factors that increased the price of the 3DS is non-existent for the Wii U controller. Lastly, it’s only the controller and not the console, so they don’t really need to make as much profit on it, so their mark up on the development costs will be small.
Nintendo is already selling the 3DS in some places in certain colours at £130, so the controller will cost nowhere near that price. Also, I’m sure Nintendo wouldn’t be willing to sell it at a price like that. Assuming both prices were true, that would mean two controllers cost almost as much as the console itself. That’s ridiculous, it wouldn’t make sense to do that.
Oh I see.
Even though I know that the controller would stream from the console itself anyway.
no what thats a great price i will buy
Lol Game.
They sell things at RRP. If something is £50 in Game it’s £30-35 online.
who thinks it’s better to wait for the ps4 or xbox 720. The wii u didn’t have a very goood success at E32012
There’s no way the controller will be that expensive. I don’t know about euros, but I think the Upad may retail for $50-$70. That’s just my guess. Leave luck to heaven.
It has to be $350 at least. Anything lower kind of worries me that they aren’t investing too much in it. :p
I did the conversion & it’s about $350. That’s reasonable to me.
who thinks it’s better to wait for the ps4 or xbox 720. The wii u didn’t have a very goood success at E32012
E3 isn’t everything. Over the years, it’s just turned into a place where people can criticise whomever they want. This year, it seemed to be Nintendo who received the criticism. Nintendo release all their vital information at their own Press Conferences anyway.
Neither did Sony or Microsoft compared to the last few years.
Sony, yes, but for Microsoft, although it contained a major, badly-done ripoff of the Wii U, and wasn’t interesting at all, their conference was better than the Kinect embarrassment of 2010-2011.
The Wii U needs to powerful enough for it to compete with Sony & Microsoft. I don’t care about the price, just want Nintendo to do well the next few years.
No it doesn’t. Nintendo has never been concerned with what Sony and Microsoft are making when it comes to power.
If you break your Wii U GamePad your pissed.

Wii U Price
£279 = $430
Wii U Gamepad
£135 = $208
That my friend is a problem. The WiiU would be more expensive then the PS3 when it came out. If thats the case the sales of the WiiU would a disaster. :(
hell no! they don’t want to piss people off with a ridiculous price like that. nintendo knows better.
It’s never a direct comparison. Wii came out with a $350 price tag in the UK.
£279, is not too bad if it a full package, Console+game+controller, but I’d never buy a second WiiU gamepad @ £135, somewhere around half that is my limit.
As long as it’s under 400 then I’m good. And ppl stop comparing it to getting an xbox 360 or ps3. This is brand new hardware not something that is 6 years old that’s had plenty of time to decrease in pricing. If you want to make a comparison to them then do it at the pricing where they first launched and then you will see the difference =p
Why do they list them seperately? Shouldn’t the Wii U come BUNDLED with a game-pad? Oh and it should come bundled with Nintendo Land….only then will the price be fair I think.
that gamepad shouldn’t be any higher than 99.
are they tryin’ to kill the die-hard nintendo-fans now?
