Nintendo Says It Can’t Catch Up With Xbox Live And PSN

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has confessed that Nintendo just can’t catch up with Microsoft’s Xbox Live and Sony’s PlayStation Network. Iwata says that both companies have spent years perfecting their online strategy, and that it would be unwise of Nintendo to try to replicate them.

“I think that what we see in terms of online gaming networks on existing dedicated gaming platforms is not particularly well suited to the approach Nintendo has taken.”

“Therefore, I can’t sit here and say to you that we can very quickly overcome or catch up to other companies, which began to work in the online field from many years ago and have been building these online networks on other platforms, and I don’t think that would be a smart strategy, either.”

    1. Okay, so we’ve got a name.
      Next step?

This is just Nintendo being a pussy of competition even though they still have billions to invest in it.

      1. How long have you been a graphics whore? Nice try Siegried and Roy. Nintendo is in a league all by itself. Graphics doesn’t make it a great system… it’s the quality of game control and overall fun make it a great system. It’s time for the Big N to enter the next level.

  1. Give us a store to buy downloadable titles from and a way to talk/play with friends online and it should be just fine

    1. yeah, i read iwata’s sateement as more of “we won’t have a online system that can work as well RIGHT NOW with toeh others” whihc is reasonable considering they have to spend time making it work themselves. obvoiusly nintendo don’t like copy pasting stuff.

    1. erm, you know why they were hacked, right? And that Xbox Live could’ve been hacked just as easily? Come on man, I ain’t even a Sony fan and I know this.

    2. In case you didn’t remember but other company was hacked as well.

Hell the European Club Nintendo got hacked.

    3. You do realize Sony was targeted for a hacking, right? That doesn’t make Sony’s network more hackable than any other network out there. Xbox Live accounts are hacked by 10 year olds every single day, just imagine how easy it would be to hack the network when organized to.

  2. Well at least they admit it. But really, the only thing I use online services for are downloading games & DLC and playing games online. I don’t care about this Netflix/HULU/whatever bullshit.

    1. Agreed!
I think Nintendo’s fine with what they have right now. There’s no need for them to try and reach Microsoft and Sony’s internet levels.

        1. Then you are just being ignorant and stupid.

You can’t say that “the difference is that Nintendo online is free” if you don’t know what the competitions offers.

It just make your weak statement null and void when someone come along and proves you wrong.

      1. free AND hasn’t compromised a bunch of people’s credit card information* just thought i’d fix the original post

free is nice, but an online system with more than just gum-and-paperclip security is what really matters

        1. Sony was targeted by hackers who knew what they were doing which meant they broke through the security.

Also Microsoft can get hack so can Nintendo hell even the FBI themselves can get hacked.

So your point fails as well.

        2. >Implying XBL hasn’t done the same thing.

Why do you idiots always bring this shit up without actually knowing shit in the process.

          1. They do know that Nintendo got hacked by lulzsec too right? They said it was easier than Sonys, but it wasn’t malicious like the attack on psn. They just did it to prove that anyone and everyone can be hacked.

        1. pkstarstormomega comment was ridiculous, the guys talking about Sony here are just saying he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

You don’t need to backup a stupid comment just because you’re a Nintendo fan and these guys are talking about Sony here…come on..they’re not even bashing Nintendo online.

This is how fanboy wars start. I don’t even use PSN, it’s just common sense.

        2. Do you not read at all?

Since the same stupid people keep saying the same thing I am going to put this in caps Lock.

ANYONE CAN GET HACKED SONY WASN’T THE FIRST NOR WAS IT THE LAST.

          MICROSOFT HAVE BEEN HACKED
THE EUROPEAN CLUB NINTENDO HAVE BEEN HACKED
          PAYPAL HAVE BEEN HACKED
          THE FBI HAVE BEEN HACKED
          STEAM HAVE BEEN HACKED
ONE OF SEGA ON-LINE GAME GOT HACKED
EA’S FIFA GAME HAVE BEEN HACKED.

And if you still believe that Sony is the only company that get hack then you are the dumbest thing that can exist in the universe, since you failed you used your brain to applied logic.

      1. not really, if their best at something is normal, hell, there are bad games at 30 and good games at 60, and most of us chooses the goods one, but I do think it is overpriced

sorry for my english, im from puerto rico

  3. Well that’s what happen when you don’t invest a proper on-line service for the Wii and DS.

You let the competition get a head start and you will always be playing catch up.

    1. nintendo has been behind with ps2 and xbox(original) online so this is the sec gen that nintendo use online.

      1. Love how you miss the Dream Cast off that list, since it was the console that made on-line the norm.

Also the Game Cube on-line was crap since very very few game used it.

The Wii on-line was basic and wasn’t account based like the PSN and Live and instead Nintendo went with the Friend code which was broken since not only did you had one the system but you had one for the each individual game.

Not to mention just how hard it is to find games on the WiiWare shop and how restrictive is was for the developers.

Also Nintendo wouldn’t let you try a demo of the WiiWare game or the virtual console game and you just had to go by word of mouth.

Oh one more thing Sony lets you download the games you brought on the PSN on PSP, PS3 and the PSP Vita. So I could have two copy of the same game on my PSP and PS3 but the price of one.

        Nintendo however doesn’t.

Nintendo really dropped the ball with their on-line service which hurt them deeply since they are having to play catch up, while Live and PSN is able to move on and offer more services leaving Nintendo further and further behind.

  4. I think what he’s really talking about is all the multimedia online features like YouTube, espn, HBO and all that bullshit. We don’t need it, we already got voice chat, accounts, achievements and video chat miiverse as a bonus so it’s good

  5. Oh, you mean THAT PSN? The one that was down for the longest time because of hackers or whatever? Wow, so hard to make insecure online stuff >.> Even harder to do better and make it secure >.>

    1. Jesus Chirst you guys are fucking thick Nintendo Fanboys. To quote Mr-Joker:

Do you not read at all?

      1. you and your sonyfanboy/msfanboy friends can go to their favorite blog and talk shit.
if you see a morron talking ilogical then don’t get near him….or what, are your best friends indigents? (and i’m not offending….them)

        thanks :)

  6. Can they not higher someone to develop it and then work out the kinks? This is a market that they must jump on to to stay in the business of hardcore games. If F2P stuff can have extensive online connections, you can’t throw out this BS.

  8. I imagine the future of the companies going something like this….
All three companies are running down a road to find the best finishing spot.
Sony and Micro are going along the path that has already been paved by them before, see no reason to deviate from it, and will reach their finishing spot with few hiccups in a nice little clearing with a cheering crowd. They had a long and eventful road and have reached a place that everyone likes them for. Most if not all of their fans are happy with what they’ve been given, and they enjoy a long life in their own little circle of admirers who like them for who they are and what they’ve done, despite any of their mistakes.

Nintendo, on the other hand, having decided that jogging behind people it doesn’t really want to follow, along a road that it has seen and has not wished to travel, isn’t the best idea, veers off of the beaten path, takes bold strides that threaten their safety and make people gasp, sometimes mock them, and often makes them wonder if Nintendo has gone insane.
But then Nintendo reaches their finishing spot on a high rise where everyone around for miles can hear them, announces that they’ve decided to make this finishing spot merely a check-point, and keep on jogging towards new, risky, exciting things, inspiring their admirers to jog along with them.
Never stopping. Never really saying “here’s our finish”.
Just jogging on, with us along with them every step of the way, be it exciting or trying, on their never-ending adventure for new lands and new experiences.

  9. it doesnt have cross game chat ive heard its like ps3 where you can chat but only when your not playing :C

    1. That’s a ram issue. It’s either you use 100% of the ram for games (ps3) or you go 50/50 (360) but at the same time to have these cool features you can’t make as good of a game.

I’d rather have a great(er) game that to talk to people while I’m playing a SP game.

  10. You don’t have to have all the bells and whistles, but your digital platform and online infrastructure has to be top notch. It’s just a given in this day and age.

        1. Actually Aeolus is correct

“Therefore, I can’t sit here and say to you that we can very quickly overcome or catch up to other companies, which began to work in the online field from many years ago and have been building these online networks on other platforms, and I don’t think that would be a smart strategy, either.”

Even Satoru Iwata agrees that they can’t catch up with their competitors and that they should abandon their attempt to do so.

  11. So, I’m the only one who enjoys having sky player(UK) youtube, facebook, twitter, bbc, channel 5, 4oD, (don’t know what america has) on my xbox?

Yeah ofcourse I want the basic stuff but for it to be able to improve constantly is a must. Xbox Live never had a lot at first but they kept updating making it better if the wiiU has the same sort of thing so it can adapt and stay ahead I’d be happy.

  12. Nintendo just entered this type of online interaction. It’s going to take several years for them to get good at it. Sony and Microsoft wasnt perfect at first. Give Nintendo some time

    1. I can understand that but the problem is Sony and Microsoft have it pretty much down pat and have had it for a few years. You can’t really convince someone to switch over to Ninty if their online isn’t as good as the consoles they already have. Its fine for a fan of Ninty since they were probably going to buy the U the second it was announced, however its going to be much harder for someone who is on the fence about buying one

  13. Well, with the Miiverse, Nintendo Network to connect for multiplayer, all titles being downloadable, and social apps, I’d say it’s fine.

  14. From what’s actually been seen from the Wii U’s internet capabilities, it’ll likely be just fine despite Iwata’s statement, but that’s not going to stop the trolls around here from spreading fear, uncertainty, and doubt. Nintendo does things their own way and are considered inferior for it by some people. It’ll never change. No matter what Nintendo does or how much more income they bring in than the others in the video game industry, they will always be considered doomed, spit upon, or labeled mediocre by others. One would’ve hoped that this kind of thing wouldn’t be present on a Nintendo site, but I suppose hopes were set too high.

    Stay classy, My Nintendo News.

  15. Miiverse, Nintendo Network, eShop, Netflix, Hulu Plus, Youtube, Amazon. I think Nintendo is just fine.

  16. i think he’s being too modest, look at Sony…they beat XBL pretty fast, imo PSN is way better than XBL

  17. Nintendo definitely NEEDS to get caught up. Obviously, they won’t have such a solid online store and such right away, but they need to ditch Friend Codes altogether, create usernames, and make their internet based games more like the other consoles. Easy to join friends in games, and easy to get online. Nintendo has had plenty of time to work on the internet for the Wii U, honestly their excuses are just ridiculous. The 3DS was a step in the right direction with the internet, the Wii U HAS to have a good online structure if they want to capture the audience of hard core gamers and casual gamers alike.

    1. I agree they are late for online features, but, I don’t think graphics is that necessary. People can have as much fun playing a cartoonistic game than a realistic game like COD.

  19. He means their online service won’t be as good as XBL/PSN right out of the gate. Which should be quite obvious. Nintendo is just going to take some time to figure out the way they want it work. They want it to be family friendly too so we’ll see how they try to implement it. Leave luck to heaven.
