New Super Mario Bros. 2 will be released in Japan on July 28th and in other regions next month. In Famitsu’s latest review list, each of the four critics awarded the upcoming Nintendo 3DS game with a 9/10 – which adds up to a total 36 points out of a possible 40. For the sake of comparison, New Super Mario Bros. Wii received a perfect score from the Japanese game magazine.

The dev team half-assed the graphics and music and just added a coin-collecting gimmick (which makes the game less arcade-like). I predict the sales of this game will be significantly less than NSMB DS, but i hope it sells a lot.

Yes they did. The graphical style is exactly the same, and the music, while we haven’t heard the whole soundtrack, is basically the same happy-go-lucky generic music we’ve come to expect from the NSMB series.

Nice. My birthday is 8/20 & I’m taking the 19th & 20th off, upgrading to an XL & playing New Mario 2 with my room-mate & my other friend who is also upgrading to an XL & getting NSMB2 too. My co-worker IS also getting the game. We’ll be co-op & coin rush marathoning like “verge-of-collapse” Korean StarCraft junkies at a 3rd rate internet cafe. Good times ahead!
1. I’m curious to see why they believe it’s so good. Perhaps its a combination of the combined horizontal/vertical movement, the Coin Rush stages and whatever happens when you get 1 million coins.

It’s Nintendo bro, to Aeolus, it automatically sucks although, I do have to agree that the New Super Mario Bros series doesn’t really do anything new or unique with each entry.
Actually from what I have read, he doesn’t hate nintendo, just the Wii … which is a fair excuse since it wasn’t the greatest IMO. Had a lot of fun, but that died quickly. If it at least had third party support it would have been so much better.

While I agree, that isn’t what it’s meant to do. It’s made so that people can play on it with their friends and families. There may be four of them now, but each of them are on different consoles so more people can play.
NSMB Wii … the only decent part of that was the multiplayer, the rest of it bored me to death. I hope the 3DS version can win me back though, it certainly looks interesting.
The only decent part about that game was when it sat in the closet dusting away with the Wii itself while I play Rayman Origins.

They also gave the original DS game 36/40 by the way, if that’s important to anyone. What this means is simply that New Super Mario Bros 2 is at least as good as the original and a great game overall.
