The Cave Developer Says Developers Are Unsure What To Do With Wii U

The Cave developer and industry veteran Ron Gilbert believes that developers are struggling to come up with new and original concepts for Wii U. He went on to say that a number of people in the development community with Wii U development kits are struggling to work out what to do with it from an innovation standpoint. Gilbert says that it will probably be about a year before you start to see games just completely nail exactly what that controller is for.

“What we experienced with the Wii U is probably what a lot of developers experienced with the Wii U, which is, ‘What do we do with it?.”

“It was this really neat secondary controller that has a screen and you can do different things on it. When I talked to my friends who were designing games for the Wii U, it’s like, ‘We don’t quite know what to do with it’.”

“It’ll probably be about a year before you start to see games just completely nail exactly what that controller is for.”

    1. Okay, so it is 7:25 over here in the U.S’ East Coast. There is a 5 hour diference between us and England. Hence my comment saying it is posted around 12 p.m when it is really 7 a.m. Of the Nintendo Direct comes on at 2 p.m over in the UK then I should be able to get all the juicy details around… 9 a.m!!!! WOOHOO! time to go back to sleep Zzzz..

    1. Except their not obliged to do anything with wiiu. Just give us off screen play , an awesome game and some touch screen commands and a map. Done. Anything else is a bonus.

      1. Yep, I agree, since they have all the standard controls to map if they want to keep it simple. Perhaps tablet/phone developers will feel more at home because they are used to working with touch/gyroscope, now they will have the bonus of knowing that can write something with the guarantee that the device has tactile buttons.

      2. Except that’s lazy as fuck and completely lacking in the innovation of gameplay that the GamePad can offer.

        1. For Multiplats I’m talking about. Assassins creed 3 , Blops 2 , Mass effect 3 , Ninja Gaiden 3 prove the point I’m trying to make. These games are all awesome and can be played on the gamepad and benefit from some maps and features.

          Nintendo land , Rayman Legends , ZombiU are the sort of games that have used the Gamepad in an amazing way. But third party multiplats just need to be like the games i listed at the top. Wiiu exclusives I expect to have awesome innovation.

    But in the end its just options. No-ones telling them to something with it, or how many unique features something should have.
    One game could use the touch screen, while another might use just the motion/gyro sensors, and other might use both, its just options, and there’s nothing wrong with just aaying “we havent put any new features, its just the same as the other versions”

  3. Well, they don’t have to add gimmicky controls just for the sake of it! AC3 was great, and it only used the gamepad for a map. In games like that, it’s better to just use the pro controller!

  4. It doesn’t take a genius to make a unique game. Everyone of us has creativity… They should just use the development kit to express themselves however they see fit. If all else fails, ditch the gamePad, and let’s see some games that solely support the nunchunk + wiimote, and the wii u pro controller. The flames and inspiration of motion controls aren’t dead. If everyone that posted here was a dev team for Wii U, our game WOULD BE ON POINT, and we’re not even designers :-)

  5. this is one thing that is bugging me. why do you NEED to do anything special with it? really, if you can do something special with it, great, but you dont need to lol. i mean what’s are the special things you can do with the xbox or ps3 versions? NO developer has ever said ” neh we’re not putting our game on the xbox cuz we cant think of any special features” while that was gearbow’s excuse for not putting borderlands 2 on the wiiu. i would be fine with them litterally just slapping a map and adding touch screen menus and thats it.

    1. I agree with you on that.. I remember one dev said that they wouldn’t port the game because of the controls… I’m like screw the Gamepad, I could have used a classic controller

      1. and whats wrong with the gamepad? seriously, its one of my all time favorite controllers. i just dont get what’s so damn difficult about not adding anything special and just porting the game over lol. they dont have to be like zombiu where you need the second screen to play the game, just copy assassins creed and mass effect and there you go, done. infact, specifically with borderlands 2, i really think the game could be improved if they added a larger map to the controller screen and allowed weapon selection and to menu navigation with the touch screen. and those two things shouldn’t even be hard to add lol. i bet we’ll see it ported over by the end of the year if they’re not too lazy about it

          1. i deffinately own one lol. so far i have assassins creed 3, arkham city, tekken tag 2, mario u, zombiu, nintendoland, darksiders 2, trine 2, mighty switch force, and little inferno(little brother bought that one). i also had mass effect 3 (which they accidentally gave me the buy one wii game get one for a dollar when i got assassins creed and masseffect at target) so i sold it after i beat it lol.

            1. Mass effect 3 is a perfect example of How to port a game onto wiiu.

              It has an awesome map where you can send squad commands , The game looks and runs EXACTLY like th 360 version which should be the minimum and has off screen play.

              What’s so fucking difficult about doing that ? I’m sorry but if Australian Developer Straight right can oull off such a well polished port in 6 months , then so can anybody….

            2. I have some of the titles you mentioned! I have ZombiU, NSMBU, but also Sonic Transformed, and Mighty Switch Force. I await RE: Revelations Unveiled Edition.

              1. is sonic allstars any good? i’ve been meaning to try it, but i haven’t gotten around to it lol. and hell yeal to revelations unveiled edition. played the hell out of the 3ds version, and i can’t wait to play it on a tv instead of a handheld lol

The problem with that is, unlike many devs nowadays, Gearbox make games that they enjoy making, it’s their passion and they want to do special things and give people a genuinely enjoyable experience. They don’t want to churn out the same basic crap, they see the chance to do something special and they want to do it, because the game will be better off for it in the end.

  6. It think it funny that he says that. The Cave takes no advantage of the Gamepad. You cant even play the game on it even though there is no reason why not to.

    1. Cave Can’t be played only on te gamepad?
      That’s pretty much a deal-breaker for me. I like to play on the gamepad at night.

      I excuse games like ZombiU that have a innovative, functional reason, but laziness is not a good reason.

      Damn, I was looking forward to this.

  7. the reality is, they can simply use the touchscreen for simple stuff like maps and inventory, just so they can use it. but in a way, i’d have to agree that this is one hurdle that only creative-minded devs can overcome.

    but i don’t believe it should stop them from coming up with new games for the console, as the gamepad itself is an optional controller. and naturally for a year or two, you’ll see games that have poor use of the gamepad features, and some that will be so brilliant, other devs would say “why didn’t i think about that?”. in due time, devs will have more idea how to maximize the gamepad.

    1. Im just saying, if they REALLY dont know what to do with it, they could just duplicate the screen. Only use those types of screens if you really feel the need to.

    1. I was just thinking the exact same thing. The DS is apparently one of the best systems ever to be sold and has tons of games on it they could use as examples for what to do with the second screen

      1. also you don’t have to utilize everything to do with a touch scream pad, i think when it comes it i think it is just grate for maps and bringing up inventory screens. i can think of more things you could do but even if you only use it for that function it still an improvement on a game without stopping act every 5 seconds like you do in most RPG just to look for stuff
