Miyamoto wants to bring “new characters to the world” outside of games

Nintendo‘s legendary video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto has talked a little about bringing new characters other than stalwarts Mario and Zelda to media outside of traditional video games. Whether this means brand new IP or simply characters outside of Mario and Zelda remains to be seen, but it is something that Nintendo is looking at closely.

Going forward, we will expand these initiatives and would like to bring not only Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda, but also new characters, to the world. We will expand these initiatives through a variety of methods, including movies and videos.”

  1. SM will live a long time. He deserves to work on his big entertainment projects. Hopefully it’s about more than merchandising and we see some genuinely creative material that translates well between the passive and interactive sides of things

  2. I mean, it’s nothing they haven’t tried before. Let’s not forget Pokemon has like 10 different shows from across the years, Mario had two shows, Donkey Kong had a show, Kirby had an anime, Fire Emblem had an anime, F-Zero had an anime, Star Fox Zero had a mini-movie to help promote it…

  3. I’m sure people didn’t notice or forgot that the little robot that is shown in the picture of Reggie’s final day working with Nintendo remains to be unseen.

      1. (suggestion (or a response to face-like symbol in message by ZX XZ): always be polite and considerate (one more suggestion: this Biblical verse: “Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.” – Ephesians 4:29, New Living Translation version (one more suggestion: this Biblical verse: “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.” – Luke 6:37, New Living Translation version)))

          1. (suggestion: have respect (including self-respect) and consideration for the feelings of any person or creature (including those of any relative of thy self or any future Internet historian))

  4. Bringing game characters into the wider world can make them even more memorable, especially when stories, events and media help fans connect with them beyond the console. thorfortune
