Research Firm Says Nintendo Is ‘Behind The Next-Gen Curve’

wind_waker_reborn_link

Senior principal analyst and head of games
at Screen Digest Piers Harding-Rolls has told Edge that he believes that Nintendo is behind the curve in a number of fields when it comes to next generation consoles. Harding-Rolls cited online and cloud content strategies as something Nintendo has yet to fully embrace. Thankfully, Nintendo announced earlier this week that Miiverse will eventually come to smartphones in the Spring.

“We believe Nintendo looks increasingly isolated in the market. It does not have the luxury of a wider device ecosystem play such as Sony, Apple or Microsoft and it is behind the curve in its online and cloud content strategies. We would like to see Nintendo be more aggressive in ‘hinging’ off its devices using its online platform – Nintendo Network – onto third-party devices as Microsoft is starting to do with Xbox Smartglass and Sony is doing with PlayStation Mobile. Neither of these solutions is significant at present but it does show that these companies are willing to engage users on the most popular third-party connected devices to drive relevance for their own products.”

    1. The Surface is pretty nice; But, I assume you meant Smartglass, which is also pretty good. Although I admit, I do not gravitate towards using Smartglass like I do a Wii U controller.

    2. I have to disagree with this, only because SmartGlass has made a believer out of me. Playing Dance Central 3 during a party, it’s so much fun to keep dancing while those waiting for their turn can select the next song or setup the playlist or change any of the options, all w/o while the gameplay is going. I can do this on my smart phone or tablet, on a 7 year old game console (8 in November), for free! Yeah, I hate to say Nintendo is behind.

    3. The idea is that you don’t HAVE to hold them both at the same time.

Just because you’re too stupid to realize it’s potential doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea. It’s just like a Wii U controller, only the screen is sitting next to you as a reference, not a constant source of attention. How often do you REALLY need to use the Wii U screen if devs weren’t shoehorning in every “look at the screen” feature they can think of just because?

      Exactly.

Sony and Microsoft have only just done this, and then they said what theyve done isnt even significant yet. Then where is this behind the curve crap coming?
Because Nintendo aren’t releasing a smart phone app either…oh wait, THEY ARE.

As usual with “tech reporters” these days, everyone butt fucking the iPhone, and Android. Yeah, we get it, theyre big, we all probably own one, its not some crazy new thing, that everyone must become.

It’s more than just trying to shoehorn your online services to other devices; Miiverse isn’t doing ANYTHING in comparison to this, in any way that actually matters. That is what they are insinuating.

lets begin with that final sentence there. I’ll put my commentary in parenthesis for this first part.

                      > “… Neither of these solutions (these solutions being Smartglass/PS Mobile) is significant (in terms of impact and usage) at present, but it does show that these companies are willing to engage users on the most popular third-party connected devices to drive relevance for their own products.”
that second half of the sentence is indeed true, of course! however, nintendo has already stated, both in the past few months as well as at the recent ND that these kinds of “third-party features” (access to miiverse and e-shop via mobile and web) are indeed coming!

now, according to what you’ve said….
                      > “….. the implication was clearly that Nintendo lacks a broader device ECOSYSTEM … ”

that’s also obvious, /at the current time/. again, these features are coming in the future! we all know that.

“Miiverse isn’t doing ANYTHING in comparison to this”

again, I will correct you here by saying that, at the MOMENT, Miiverse (and eShop) isn’t doing anything in comparison to Smartglass/PSMobile.

the point of the matter is, Mr. Hardling-Rolls and his firm are stating information that consumers already know will be moot in the coming months! we know these features are coming already! to spew negativity about a certain company without looking to what that company has planned in store is quite ridiculous, don’t you think?

also, your reuse of the word “faggot” in order to provoke me into anger is a piss poor attempt. uwu
also, your grammar’s wrong. “how exactly is that the case” should be “how exactly that is the case”.

thank you!! have a good day. c:

Are indeed coming…when? Also, how is this so extremely significant as what their competitors are doing among other similar features that are likely being prepared for their upcoming consoles?

More importantly, why does it take Nintendo ages to do everything their competitors do properly? Anyone can say “it’s coming”, but fucking -when-? For instance, they announced that the Eshop would eventually hit smartphones and web browsers back in 2011…where the hell is it?

“that’s also obvious, /at the current time/. again, these features are coming in the future! we all know that.”

Coming in the future, okay, so they need to start releasing them on a timely manner and not half-assed whenever they’re finally available. They announce all these things and seemingly take a year or more to deliver it, being late to standards that the others have delivered faster and more efficiently.

“again, I will correct you here by saying that, at the MOMENT, Miiverse (and eShop) isn’t doing anything in comparison to Smartglass/PSMobile.

the point of the matter is, Mr. Hardling-Rolls and his firm are stating information that consumers already know will be moot in the coming months! we know these features are coming already! to spew negativity about a certain company without looking to what that company has planned in store is quite ridiculous, don’t you think?”

Too much use of “coming” for things that could have been done since the very inception of those features. They seem to announce features that would be coming and fail to deliver them on a timely basis. See: Browser based/Smartphone Eshop. But thanks for showing how behind the curve Nintendo actually is…because that’s clearly what they are.

Don’t even bring up grammar when you lack proper punctuation skills and stick a bunch of weeaboo emotes in your sentences.

                      Oh, by the way…

                      You’re a faggot.

                    3. …oh man, I should keep track of all the times you say “faggot” to further prove how juvenile your attitude is. it’s quite amusing! but alright! if you’re so hell bent on pointing out my punctuation every time you type a response, I guess I’ll make the effort to take this argument a little bit more seriously!

“Are indeed coming…when? Also, how is this so extremely significant as what their competitors are doing among other similar features that are likely being prepared for their upcoming consoles?”

Wow— Slow down. That was a wordy sentence. The fact that Mr. Hardling-Rolls (and staff) failed to pose the question of “when” at all in their analysis (as well as fail to mention Nintendo’s plans in bringing these services) really points to how increasingly biased this particular portion of the report was! Plus, it’s not a matter of “significance”. Nintendo’s induction of Miiverse/eShop onto web-enabled devices, computers and smartphones in the future is by no means more “significant” than Smartglass/PS Mobile (although, it’s debatable whether anyone /really/ enjoys Smartglass in the first place…. just look at the reviews on the app store). And timeliness is hardly a matter of discussion here—or rather, is even important to the discussion at all. This isn’t a matter of “when” Nintendo will release the eShop/Miiverse onto third-party devices. It’s a matter of /how/, and if, at all, it will be efficient. To be honest, you’re just exhibiting severe impatience. Things like this take time.

“Coming in the future, okay, so they need to start releasing them on a timely manner and not half-assed whenever they’re finally available. They seem to announce features that would be coming and fail to deliver them on a timely basis. …. But thanks for showing how behind the curve Nintendo actually is…because that’s clearly what they are.”
                      Huh????
You’ve stated two completely unrelated points here. Also, what constitutes a “timely basis”? Just because Nintendo announced that these features were coming (keyword: coming), doesn’t mean they have to cater to your… quite frankly stubborn expectations… and deliver them as soon as humanely possible. Until Nintendo announces a date, estimated time frame, or potential release quarter, why would you assume these apps were coming instantly?

And oh, I apologize. I didn’t realize my “weeaboo emotes” were bothering you. (✿◖◡◗) To be honest, I’m not sure you even comprehend what “weeaboo” even means, because you’re using it in a completely irrelevant manner.

And, to be quite frank, I cannot for the life of me understand why we can’t just discuss this manner in simple, respectful terms! Why all the name calling?

  15. What this guy is saying doesn’t make sense. I agree with the statements people put out saying Nintendo was behind the curve with online gameplay and distribution. “Was behind”…

Now they are with the times with digital distribution. Heck, Nintendo is the console distributor of the main three to be embracing it the most now (again, of the main three. I am not including Steam in this) And as far as the statement as connectivity to external non-Nintendo devices goes, he ignored the fact that Nintendo announced an app to access Miiverse on smartphones, and also confirmed the process of an eShop app where you can buy games on the go, and download them when you get home, Steam does this. But according to this guy, It’s still counts as behind the curve because It’s not out yet, apparently.

Also, It’s not exactly fair to compare Nintendo to Sony and Microsoft in the first place. Unlike them, Nintendo is a video game company, they do not make phones, TVs, radios, and anything else like that. So if you want to judge Nintendos decisions and practices, you must consider their goals and identity. Sony and Microsoft are not gaming companies, they have gaming devisions. Nintendo, however, is nothing but, so if you want to make a claim such as “behind the curve” remember who you’re talking about, and remember the current position of other video game companies right now. Until Steambox was announced, Nintendo was the only dedicated gaming company developing home consoles for 10 years, and despite going up against smartphones and other new innovative pieces of tech, Nintendo is still doing extremely well. Give credit where it’s due.
