Iwata Says He Doesn’t Think The Concept And Potential Of The Wii U Have Been Rejected

wii_u_gamepad_zoom

Japanese publication Toyo Keizai Online recently conducted an interview with Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata. During the insightful interview, Iwata claimed that he doesn’t believe that the concept and the potential of Wii U has been rejected by consumers. He then went on to say that Nintendo developers will do anything to make their products resonate with customers.

“It’s difficult to say ‘the Wii U is a system that does such-and-such’ in a simple manner, and understanding it takes time. While we unfortunately had a period in the first half of 2013 where releases were sparse and hardware sales have lulled, I don’t think that the concept and potential of the Wii U have been rejected.”

“Nintendo developers are extremely insatiable when it comes to whether what they make resonates with customers or not. They’ll do anything to achieve it. Both Miyamoto (Shigeru) and I repeatedly say,’It’s not like we are making pieces of art, the point is to make a product that resonates with and is accepted by customers.”

  1. Nintendo is perfect in every way and the Wii U doing fine because Nintendo is perfect and nobody should say bad things about perfection because my grammar isn’t that bad.

    1. You are correct, never doubt whole-heartly about Nintendo as they will continue to blow away our puny minds…

    1. Art = Graphics…

I corrected the mistake Lord Iwata…

Forgive me for my tresspassing on your supreme status!

          1. …I meant with you… That’s the stereotype people say of us Nintendo fans… It’s not helpful to be overly subjective to an obligation that has nothing to do with continuous loyalty…

            1. They have not yet realised with this is all about except a few handful of people…

But do not worry, I’m not like this in the realm outside the virtual illusion…

                        1. Nintendo Commander

                          Do not fear…

                          I never assault a fellow Nintendo fan…

I only attack Xbots and annoying Sonyans with big egos…

And occasionally those CPU “Master Race” soldiers coming here for no reason at all…

                          1. …It’s the Nintendo fans that’s attacking me… but it’s ok it happens every where i go… Not even my love for gaming can help me….
                            ….”kill yourself”…”die”…”emo”…

                          2. Why would everyone target you on this site? Look like me and Nintendo Commander don’t mind you being here.

                            1. I hope you still stay on and don’t let other bother you. I start to think some of Nintendo fans are very immature on this site.

                              1. Look like you got off the wrong foot here. The worst can happen is that you stop visiting the site. I don’t see why not for everyone come to this site regardless where they are from.

I really hope you find somebody to talk to on this site. To let you know there are a lot of trolls lately on this site.

                              2. yeah, I’m one…tited I am but I assure you, I’m one that will talk to ya if you want me too. I maybe a true gamer but I defend my first and only home console…nintendo. I was raised with it and I’ll die with it…no matter what life throws at me, job, wife and kids, tornatoes…no matter what. Trolls can say what they want, facts in their ways (that’s right blackbond, I’m watching you)…it don’t matter. As long as I get fun out of it, I’m good…that goes for anyother system I play too. However, don’t let my trolling or talking stupid stuff fool you, I’m more intelligent than you think I am. Specially in gaming and making friends if I wanted too.

                                :)

                1. Yeah.. That was pretty painful to read. I mean I’ve written a paper on how video games are works of art for college before and I’m an artist myself, and someone so big right in the industry saying that what they’re doing isn’t a work of art (and that potentially a video game can’t be a work of art and resonate and be accepted by customers (which could be quite what one of the goals of an artwork is all about)) is really disheartening.

                  1. They are merely saying that games should be what games always have been instead of trying to make them into something so grandieur like Mona Lisa which is pretty but has no real use other than that…

Having fun lasts longer in games than it being some elegant piece of artwork…

But ofcourse there is nothing wrong with something looking beautiful in both graphics and as a game…

                    1. My stance on games EXACTLY. THANK YOU. Games are for fun, not seeing how detailed you can make shit (I’m looking at you CoD on xbox one of whatever the hell I saw with freaking dirt under nails.. Who cares about that? Watch a movie or something.). Forgive my language, but come on. People forgot what’s really important.

                      1. I think good graphics can be awesome by the way, but people should stay focused on making the game a good experience. If I don’t get good memories when remembering a game, I probably won’t call it that good, no matter how it looked. Just don’t overdo it.

                  2. Being a game dev myself, I hate when people rely on the “its art” argument. Its a product first, you may put your touches on, you can make it look great but ultimately it must be a product. I like to think that the art is not what makes a game, art only helps players feel attached to the game. But the most important part of the game should be gameplay, i don’t find game-play to be art.

                  3. I think Mr. Iwata tries to explain that no matter if your game is a wonderful game, but if it really reaches the audience and gets people to enjoy it.

Sadly, there are many artists today (or people that like to call themselves so) that take neither respect nor interest on public’s perception of their ‘art works’.

For me, and I think it’s Iwata’s POV on VGs also, if any kind of art is not enjoyed and/or understood by people, it has very little value (except in author’s selfesteem, of course).

              1. One of the coolest thing about WiiU is controller options imo. For fightin games like Smash Pro controller is killer, for Fps games Wii mote all the way and for games that has little more thought put into it Gamepad. Wii U can do lots of things like all N consoles its just some devs dont wanna try to unleash its true meaning, you know what i am saying? Nintendo is always ahead of others in gameplay wise remember when moving in 3d world wasnt so clunky anymore, remember when you felt the explosion, remember when aiming was much more natural and remember when you didnt need to stop game to go into inventory, those are the things Nintendo made possible, those are the things that devs should focus on. This is the reason why Nintendo is the best, they are always 5 steps ahead of others gameplay wise and thats what is unique about them.

                1. And that they always go their own path unlike the rest who just wants to do the same as the rest only a tiny bit better…

                  1. Exactly, i just dont get excited about Ps4 because to me its still Ps1 with better specs and i have all three of them and to be honest its boring to play with Playstation, same goes to Xbox they stoled everythin from Dreamcast and still today continue to do so which means they dont have own ideas, they ride with the things Sega did, which is sad because im sure if Sega would still be here they would have unique console like Nintendo. Multimedia companies entering gamin business was biggest mistake for gamin, because they have no originality, you know what im sayin?

                    1. powerstone, jsr, shenmue, dynamite cop, ecco etc etc

just a few titles from DC era which would diversify the nintendo library significantly..if only ;)

              2. Iwata, try telling that to the mainstream gaming media, who are your biggest Achilles’ heel at this moment in time.

Also, stop trying to justify poor business decisions.

                  1. No, that’s them trying to justify poor business decisions. Depends on the delays though. If it’s to finetune a game to make it better, I’m okay with that. A rushed game is ruined forever, after all.

The mainstream gaming media has all but written them off, and the mindless sheep that take their words as gospel truth isn’t helping.

                    1. The only things Nintendo fans need is to buy and play the games they are drawn too…

Personally I don’t care if 100% of the entire western mainstream media is against our Empire as they are all shallow…

              3. Well, I’m on the verge of rejecting the system completely.

First of all, still no accomplishment system. I know that Nintendo can implement that with an update because Sony did the same thing.

Secondly, the software are games that we’ve played before. Let’s be honest, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong Country Returns 2 and so on are just the same games as their predecessors, with new content. I want Nintendo to take it to the next level with their games. Take risks. It will work out.

Finally, I want them to do stuff that the competitors do. For example, have frequent sales (with heavily discounted games, not like 10 or 20%), offer online multiplay on all of their franchises (or at least the games that support local multiplay, such as the Mario games and their party franchises) and invest more in different games. I would buy a Wii U in an instant if I saw newer franchises or even rebirths. Star Fox, F-Zero, Ice Climbers, anything that hasn’t been seen in a while. If Nintendo want people to keep up with all their franchises, they need variety. Same old Mario, Mario Kart etc games doesn’t appeal to me anymore.

                1. 1. They already said that they would not do such a thing, but ofcourse they can always change their minds, however everybody else are allowed to implement accomplishments…

                  2. Just because new Xbot or Sonyan games are released it doesn’t mean new gameplay experiences…

They might be called something else and look somewhat differently but most of their games have similar experiences no matter what they try to do so it’s not just Nintendo…

                  3. Heavily discounted game only for old games, not Wii U games…

                  I agree with the rest…

                  1. whoah whoah whoah commander…hold your horses there. Kid Icaras was one of those “old games”, look how he succeed even with the moves he had before making a grand entrace into Smash Bros. Wii U. I disagree that they can’t be wii u games, after all, this will degrade you if you just see them as another old game that can be revived…even sega knows that much other wise we would have never saw Gordius Thunderhead in sonic allstar racing transformed or their themed race way.

                    1. No no no…

When I said “old games” I meant games from the era of NES/SNES/N64 and so on…

Obviously I don’t consider Kid Icarus Uprising to be an old game in anyway…

              4. ““Nintendo developers are extremely insatiable when it comes to whether what they make resonates with customers or not. They’ll do anything to achieve it.”

                can’t tell if serious or….

              5. Nintendo failed to understand, that as profitable as the Wii was, they let that candle burn far too long, and in the end, the “Wii” was known to all as an underpowered, casual machine. If they wanted to capitalize on the “Wii” name, they needed to do it at LEAST two years prior the WiiU’s launch. Say, the holiday season after they announced WiiU at E3. But as they were just beginning development, that wasn’t going to happen.

OK, so fine. They’re going to release a next Gen system when the Wii is stale and has a mass-accepted connotation for being a weak, casual machine. (please don’t bring Xenoblade or Skyward sword into this. They were amazing, and like everything else, too late in the game to save the Wii’s reputation.)

Nintendo at this point, NEEDED to distance itself from the “Wii” image, and instead, embraced it. Bad. Fucking. Move. It’s like shooting the WiiU in the leg before the race begins.
Then, they take a system that may have been powerful at the time they conceived it, and again failed to realize that if you take as long as they did to release it, your hardware is going to be lagging behind. Total lack of technical foresight. Understandable as they obviously didn’t know what they were getting into upon entering the HD world. (as they admitted) If you haven’t fully grasped HD programming, then you probably don’t know your hardware is lacking as well.

Delayed hardware. Delayed software. I love the gamepad concept. What a fucking waste of a brilliant idea. Now tons of people won’t give what WAS a fantastic idea a chance, because of all the shit that came with it.

meanwhile, the 3DS, another underpowered piece of hardware, is just strong and brilliant enough, that it plays the part of the tugboat, dragging Nintendo’s heavy ass into the next Gen financially.

Nintendo has a lot of money. And they will burn through it to recover from this class-A cluster fuck. I’ll stay with them till their last console, but if they don’t start opening their eyes, the WiiU’s successor will be their last home console. (they’ll be around as a company long after I’m dead.)

If you made it this far, accept my apology for a thesis-length post.

                1. +1

Not to mention that the Wii’s controller contradicts the Wii U’s gamepad.

That post should be an article itself. It’s that good

              6. DAMN IT IWATA NO ONE FUCKING KNOWS THAT THE WII U EXIST ITS TIME TO FUCKING START ADVERTISING THE SHIT OF WII U!!!!

                1. Honestly, I see them bringing out their advertising in full force during Q4. But this is their last chance to get it right. If they fuck this up, Sony and Microsoft will just take advantage of the open playing field.

                  1. iwata believes that people know that the wii u exsist and are not interested in it. Were in fact the only ones that knows about the wii u are hardcore-core gamers (gamers who really like playing games not shooter gamers) and fans. my little cousin (10 years old) lives in a world were call of duty and mincraft are the main games to play if it wasn’t to me he would probably stick to just that kind of game genre i told him to stay with nintendo and ps1/2/psp (because of good game like crash, spyro, klonoa etc).
the smartest thing to do is to do a “game boy” let the games be for the family and everyone. but the wii u can be for adults with jut those reasons you gave on the post below

“I know that I already use my Wii U in this way. I regularly browse the net, play games, use Facebook or Miiverse, watch videos; all while watching TV at the same time.”

i do these thing a lot too. i still have 4-5 unfinished games on wii u (i don’t have much time) if only they can make a good media player it would easy be one of the most used console i ever got and it would appeal to everyone. it has the best browser out of the three console it will probably still be when ps4 and xbox one gets out. it has the best youtube (not app) even better than the computer (is that weird?) it can play games (if only those darn devs stop making bad excuses and start making games, i think that was what Miyamoto meant “publishers should see game like a “toy company””). if they get the a good media player that supports all video files or hell they could make a package for 99 us dollars to support all files or just the media player it is still a guaranteed buy and when that happens its bye bye dvd’s and blueray disc. maybe should had taken that marketing 101 class… haha joking

              7. Check out this BBC report from earlier today.

                http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23521277

Notice how it mentions the rise in multi-screen usage in the living room. It’s quite likely that Nintendo predicted this increasing trend and designed the Wii U to (eventually) take full advantage of it.

I know that I already use my Wii U in this way. I regularly browse the net, play games, use Facebook or Miiverse, watch videos; all while watching TV at the same time.

If Nintendo is clever, they could advertise the Wii U not just as a games console, but as a multi-tasking device. But the key here is advertising it properly.

                1. Well, that explains why nintendo is getting in tvii. And maybe a few other apps as well like amazon video, hulu, netflix (GIVE ME BACK MY SHINCHAN), and other applications I can’t seem to remember…but they better step up their game if they want to succeed in the console wars…the BIG 3.

                  1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

I just wish there was Flash. I know no one really uses it anymore, but it means I turn off my Wii U and grab my laptop. Heck, I even bought a Mini Display Port to HDMI cord so I could watch my movie on my HD TV. If Wii U had Flash, I wouldn’t need my laptop for anything lol.

              8. GI see how people can take comments out of context. Mario galaxy was a piece of art until we see a mario galaxy type of creation for the wii u they can say this.

              9. I feel like if they better advertise the Wii-U it’ll really help. Also if all else goes wrong making a Pokemon console game isn’t a bad idea! A game like Colosseum and XD.

              10. I don’t get why it’s such a complicated thing to sell. It’s literally a home console version of the DS. You have two screen and one uses touch control. Why is that so hard to make games for? It’s already been done.
