      1. When you say play wii games on wii u game pad, how does that work, so can I use game pad controls for metroid prime? Or skyward sword?

        1. No, you still need to use the Wiimote to play those game, you just going to be using the sensor bar that is built in in the gamepad for that.

        2. Gamepad becomes the tv. game controls are normal. and to add what londone247 commented, Miiverse and eshop has two new loading screens. Miiverse has a world clock with miis and times of certain cities surrounding a world with your time and eshop has a slot machine game. purpose unknown.

      2. They need to make it so you can use the av cables and the hdmi at the same time.I’m not buying a new audio receiver just because the wii u does not have an optical output like every other system. Even the Xboxone and ps4 are going to have it.But this would be a simple solution that wouldn’t be perfect but would work well enough.Anybody else having this issue?Maybe I will try calling nintendo but I’m sure after almost a year on the market I can’t be alone here they have to know this is a problem.

        1. did u even read my comment above? it clearly says that you can now output sound using various options, and basically says that you can either output sound using the hdmi, or you can output sound through your wii composite or component cables, while having the picture/image outputted by your wii u through the hdmi, so for instance, for me i use a gaming monitor sometimes, and so for me, i have my 2nd PS3 console set up on said monitor, so i have the image going through the hdmi, while i tell the audio to go through the composite to my hifi/sound system/amplifier.

This is now what i do with the wiiu, and just like ps3 you can now choose to output sound through the hdmi to your monitor or tv, and also output sound at the same time through the composite/component cables so you can use a amplifier or hifi aux in, this is a great feature, and one i have wanted since launch of the wiiu, its great they have done this, along with adding the dolby codec for wii games!

      3. i bought the wii u so my daughter could plug it in and play games. we have internet but it does not reach the back rooms… i just want her to plug and play not get online not have to be online etc i dont want to connect it to the internet blah blah so since it wont do anything unless it updates to the internet why cant my daughter put a game in like super mario bros that i paid $64 for and play it without connecting and updating to the internet…

  1. I can’t wait to try this out with Xenoblade or The Last Story!
Probably the feature I was most excited about out of the known ones.
They really caught me by surprise with that, but I love it!

      1. Wow…that’s kind of disappointing. I was hoping you could because both of my wii remotes stopped working a few weeks ago.

        1. Both wii motes broke. You sure the batteries didn’t just die.Or you don’t have them sinked up.If that’s not it maybe you should stop bathing with them. They don’t like water.lol

      2. yeah just tried it. i find it really retarded to have to use the wii remote/nunchuck to play on the game pad. But it might be useful for someone whose TV broke and the only way to play Wii games would be through the game pad.

i was quite disgusted when I found out about this. Gosh…
No button mapping? In what age do we live???

    1. Uhhh… you might want to go get that tv back, seeing as how you can’t play off tv wii games without the U being plugged in.

    1. Did you know that the GamePad’s black bar above its screen is actually the GamePad’s very own Sensor Bar?

  2. This is a great update and impressive update I have to say, let’s see what else they will show tomorrow.

  3. Can’t wait to check out what Red Steel and Super Mario Galaxy look like on this. I wonder if Nintendo will release an update that when later on when we can use more than one GamePad, we can use the two screens for multiplayer, our own screen like. Would be pretty cool!

    1. YouThe GamePad doesn’t have the best visuals because it’s so tiny. It doesn’t look the same as an HD TV.

  4. I wanna try this out. I really need to get my better router hooked up though, 46 mins…. Ah well, Wii U was never very quick at downloading stuff.

    1. That;s not your wifi’s fault, that’s just the nintendo’s servers. 3 of my friends and I were downloading it at the same time and it was taken for ages for all of us. It would just be because there’s alot of people downloading it.

      1. THIS IS THE SECOND FUCKING HOUSE UUUUHHHHHHHH!!!!!! shitty wii u burnt my 1st house down thus summer because the SHITTY dust caught fire but LLOOOOOK it happenns AGAIN from a freaking UPDATE!!!!! this time my neighbors houses caught on fire tooo!! UUUHHHHHHHRRRRR!!!!! IM SCREWED!!!!!

        1. Why would you update your wiiu if it just a dust collector without games? Their must be a reason you turned on?

  5. sounds to be a good update. I really hope they implement a unified account system, that is so needed. And then see the digital downloads increase exponentially. Nintendo, mark my words.

  6. Quick question, if I’m playing a game that uses a traditional game pad (cc or gc) like brawl do I need that attachment or can I just use the game pad’s buttons?

  7. WOW what a great update, its live now in uk too, just go to system settings and search for update, and it will find it and start, this is a great feature, now i want on screen notifications, and the ability to send messages and read messages from the friends list while in game, i don’t like having to launch miiverse for this, granted the ps3 didn’t allow it at launch either they had to patch that feature in, so i know nintendo will eventually get around to it, then all we will need is better system stability, so it dont freeze if laying online as much, and digital purchases being tied to my account not my system and the ability to download said purchased on at least 2 consoles like on psn, and unified accounts for nintendo platforms!

I hate having to buy digital stuff twice for my wiiu, and the one i have for the kids, its frustrating, and i would so appreciate if it were like psn!

    1. You can forget about multiconsole purchases right now lol also if the unified account becames a reality it will be just to share your cards credit.

  8. I just noticed, on Wii mode when you play a virtual console game it no longer stretches all games to 16:9 like the wii did, it properly adds the pillar boxes. So no longer do you have to adjust your TV settings so your old virtual consoles games don’t stretch.

  9. My fucking god. I’m speechless. Playing Beatles Rock Band on my Gamepad as we fucking speak.

    Your fucking move, Microsoft.

  10. what does the Wii U Chat via headset connected to the Game Pad mean exactly? can we talk to friends via chat while playing any game or just on the desktop? like xbox party??

      1. seriously haha they permanently banned wit in 1 minute wtf hhaha. all i said was that the wii u system update burned my house down DONT DO IT. wtf nintendo. miiverse is lame.

      2. your actually the last comment i posted too, you said “ice did you update” and i said “im homeless now….” hahahaha

    1. Im on a 2 week ban currently. My like….6th one? My 1st account got a perma ban. But whatever Admins are noobs.

      1. you get banned for dumb shit too!! that just proofs my theory further how nintendo employees are required to where diapers to get employed.

  11. Holy shit, this is what I wanted in the first place xenoblade on my gamepad. I haven’t had the time to play it because I get hom late so I usually only play my 3ds with headphones while everyone sleeps, but now I can play xenoblade on it!

  12. Should I do the wii system transfer? I feel like if I transfer the data from my wii, there will be no use for it anymore. Also I have a lot of content on my wii. Won’t that take up most of the data on my wii u?

    1. I’m pretty sure I heard the Wii U has a built-in storage partition that equals the maximum storage limit for the Wii, which eludes me at present.

Then again, being an octopus and thus devoid of a brainstem, I could be wrong.

  13. Metroid Prime Trilogy on my gamepad……….. CAN’T WAIT TO TRY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D Also Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 ;)

      1. Don’t mean to be rude, but HELL NO!!!!!!!!! It’s my most prized gaming possession and I plan on keeping it for as long as I live.

  14. Not to be a negative Nelly, but why exactly are people so excited about playing Wii games on the Gamepad? Sure, its cool to have that ability, but what’s so exciting about it? Playing games on a tv is MUCH better than looking at a tiny screen. At least, for me it is. It’s not like playing on the Gamepad will change the experience or anything.

    1. It is cool when you want to do undercover gaming or wanted to play a wii game and someone wanted to use the Tv ( a feature just avalible to wiiu games)

      1. Well, I guess I myself never have that problem. Since I only play games in my bedroom, and nobody else touches my tv.

    2. I was reading that some people have started to take their Wii U’s with them on long trips, like in airports, to plug them in without a TV present, and just play games right there in the airport on the gamepad. It seems this would now allow Wii games to become that portable as well.

  15. With all of the updates that the Wii U has received since launch, by the time I finally buy one, I’ll never know what the Wii U was like originally. And I’ll take all of the updates for granted and just presume things was always the way it is. Maybe that’s for the best.

Now, if only Nintendo would release updates for the Mii mode (for 3DS and Wii U) and give more options for creating Mii’s. Such as multiple hats to put on them, and being able to change the skin to freaky colors like yellow and green etc. I want to create Simpsons characters. Also, allow more vibrant, dramatic hair colors. Like orange (instead of the red color that doesn’t quite look ginger), and white. I can’t tell you how many Mii’s doesn’t look right due to these major limitations of the Mii creator mode.

  16. This is good news for me, because I may be another room and not be able to use my TV and I can play the games with the gamepad. I like the Wii U concept.

  17. Nintendo rocks! I like how they are improving the Wii U functionality, I love the idea of online multiplayer support and Wii Motion plus enhancements for Wii Sports Club HD, I can’t wait to play tennis and bowling and boxing and baseball with motion plus controls in HD against online competition.

  18. DOWNLOADING THE UPDATE NOW! Can’t wait! The whole off screen for Wii games was such a HUGE surprise. I never thought Nintendo would think of that.

    1. It’s a wasted effort, I mean who the hell is even going to do that, nobody fucking asked for this. Where is xgame chat, achievements? Nintendo you fucking suck lol

    1. well to be honest it sucks anyways as you have to use the remote/nunchuck to play on it. it makes the screen even tinier as you have to keep it away a bit to use your controllers. It sucks IMO.

  19. All the babies so excited for this dumb update. You still have to use the Wii mote to play your stupid old baby Wii games. So what you going to do, put the Gamepad on the floor and waggle your wii motes while looking at the low resolution little outdated Gamepad screen? That sounds like lots of fun!
Oh I forgot the awesome Gamepad has a stand so you can put it there while you play your old Wii games using your Wii motes. Sounds like tons of fun fun fun!

  20. “Users can now chat using a headset connected to the Wii U GamePad.” Might just be me, but I think that’s the 1st step towards party chat being added.

    1. That’s not new that’s what I’ve done since launch day. I don’t know why they announced it as new unless just letting people know that didn’t already.

  22. I quit playing my Wii games because they look terrible on my HD TV… The edges of the characters are shit.

If this update lets me use my gamepad as a smaller screen, and my Wii games look good again, I’m finishing Xenoblade, SS Hero mode, MM and Twilight!! My game library just doubled! ;D

If Nintendo allows button mapping so I can play most Wii games with the gamepad only someday, I’ll be estatic, but I’m happy with this step forward.

  23. PSU(Playstations+WiiU)

I hope they do a later update that allow u to play wii games using the gamepad instead of using the that silly ass nunchuck shit

      1. have you ever used the classic controller instead of the wiimote/nunchuk on games that had the option for it?
Probably not or you would have known how that works. No need to point.

    1. Me and my friends go to anime and comic convention road trips a lot in my suv, this is perfect for thoes long road trips
