Hackers Disable Nintendo 3DS Region Lock

Hackers have now found a way to disable the region lock on Nintendo 3DS consoles. The method allows you to play legitimately purchased overseas titles on your Nintendo 3DS. To enable this feature you must be running v4.5 firmware or older, if you aren’t then this specific hack won’t work. You will need to use a Nintendo DS or Nintendo 3DS flashcard which works with legacy firmware. This will enable you to run a patched launcher file that modifies your system to load cartridges from other regions. You can also update with more recent firmware afterward to play imported games that require it.

    1. “you must be running v4.5 firmware or older”

^^^ No. You must have a 3DS with 4.1 up to 4.5 firmware.

Anything beyond 4.5 won’t work with this ‘hack’.

  1. I dont think i quite get it, if i use this hack in a 4.5 version or lower and them update to the latest version. Will i be able to play out of my region games??

    1. Great idea actually. I wonder if I can get a 3DS with 4.5 firmware, hack it, then transfer my original 3DS to it…

My only concern is Nintendo releasing an update to brick my 3DS. :/ hmm

  3. I wouldn’t waste money on something I can’t read anyway. I barely buy games too, making games (even though really cheap and poorly made browser games) seems more entertaining.

  4. 4.5 and older. lol.
new 3DSes are already v5 or newer, and most 3DS games requires a system update too.

so yeah.. didnt matter that much anyway.

    1. in fact, if they just backward engineer it, it is very easy to avoid a sue, but if the process is hard forced, then is easy
but look to the R4, they took almost 5 years to make somthing against them

    2. Eh… I’m a month late but whatever.
There’s also legitimate hackers, they work for companies to try and find weaknesses in their software and/or network which they could exploit. Instead of doing so, they report the weaknesses so they can be fixed.

  5. Sure, tell another few thousand people how to hack lol, nice!!!
There are many more viewers on these blogs than ppl commenting….
Those that are busy, don’t have time to comment, but they do have time to read (if that makes any sense)

      1. We probably don’t even know the half of it !! It could be sadder than any of us thought was possible…
In most cases, ppl don’t know the half of it…
        Just saying lol

  7. Kudos to the guy who managed to do that.
Region locking is most definitely one of the most asinine things that Nintendo insists on doing. The fact that the main argument supporting that decision is parental control makes it even more egregious.

      1. this, the hackers are making the system not have BS restriction that are in place for no reason but ot make people buy multiple systems, and btw that “we need it for parental controls” shit they said before doesnt make sense as sony’s systems work fine without region lock and their parental controls simply include all rating systems

  8. How pointless, 4.5 means any games that came out before Luigis mansion around march last year. All those games are old and cheap now anyway, it really narrows down what you’d get out of it.

  9. I wonder, can we transfer stuff (I would like to keep my friend code and friends) to a 3ds that has been made region free? Like will it stay region free or will it kill the exploit?

I’m holding off until the hackers release an update for those who updated to the latest firmware. Won’t be updating my 3ds until then.
