This week’s Media Create sales are now in from Japan. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is beaten to the top spot by Dragon Quest Monsters 2 on the 3DS, which sells almost 120,000 copies. And, instead, DK’s latest venture for the Wii U rolls in at number 2, with just under 36,000 copies sold. Meanwhile, Kirby: Triple Deluxe continues to sell well, adding a further 23,000 copies to its total.
In the hardware chart, the 3DS still remains dominant with 39k units sold, though suffers a drop of almost 10k from last week. The Wii U bumps itself up a further 1k in units, possibly in conjunction with the release of Donkey Kong. You can view the top 10 software and hardware charts below.

These games are building a solid foundation for current and future WiiU owners.
Well, Mario Kart, Zelda and Smash Brothers are pretty much the three “big ones” that are specifically known for getting people to go out of their way to buy a console just for that game, so hopefully they’ll have a more significant impact than usual.

They thought since it sold well on 3ds, Wii that it would sell the same for Wii U but there were sort wrong and now they will pay for it. This game sucks and is the same as the last 2 just in HD. they really made donkey kongs first appearance in HD very underwhelming and this is what they get for playing it safe and rehashing the Wii one
It wasn’t nintendo decision it was retro. I’ll be one of many to say retro’s decision was selfish they should have made another metroid(or make star fox) just please fans. Also DK side scrollers are never rehashed. They do a lot more unique level design in that series then most mario games. Tropical Freeze is going to be a great game, I’ve played demos at events and the game felt great. It may be low for u but I still find it enjoyable

Is 35K sales not good for a game released on Thursday and didn”t have a full week like some other games? I am just wondering because even though the Wii U didn’t really rise, the sales seemed good so far and it took like a month or so for 3D World to drop off the top 10, its still in the top 20 I believe.

Compared to other games, no it is not good sales especially it being the only new game in the top ten. Typically the first couple of days are the strongest in sales and it’s not even over the 100,000 mark. I’m not sure how well this game will do in Japan. This low of a number worries me.

No, Super Mario 3D World sold 106,967 units its first week which is around 3x as much as Tropical Freeze. Super Mario 3D World is also the worst selling core Mario console title for an opening week. Looking at the numbers though, it was just a bad month for gaming sales all around.

I’m reading that the nem DK is a huge Flop, but well, it’s the number 2 in the charts!
Then I read a lot: “DK didn’t save Wii U, as 3D world also, and MK8 will not save too, and Super Smash Bros will not save Wii U again”. Buy Assassin’s Creed or Batman or Watch Dogs, whatever. It’s enough for me to have a console with these titles. Good enough.
“Because the gamepad is terrible”… Well it’s light, easy to hold, even if you consider a regular tablet.

Yes, 1st party will help sell the Wii U but we all know what they really need is 3rd party support. Or good 2nd party developers to help them. A few FPS’ here and there and sports game which left a huge gap for thst fanbase. If Nintendo has good mature and soprts games, why would other people by ps4 or Xbone? And for f*cks sakes put online on most of 1st party games as it give it a better replay value and a dose of fun and challenge. So Ninty take note- more mature games, sports games and online!
Man the Wii U is so fucked in Japan. The PS4 is going to slaughter it over there. It will be like Gamecube and PS2 all over again only worse. Nintendo needs to drop their crappy business model of it would be honorable to die off remaining family friendly than to change. They need to learn what the mass market it like and cater to it.
