One of my most anticipated titles for this year is Splatoon so it’s great that we are getting a constant feed of information regarding the game. The latest bout of information comes from Famitsu and reveals that the game won’t feature online chat which is sure to disappoint a number of Wii U owners. Anyway, here’s the information translated by NeoGAF member Streets Ahead.
- Team made up of lots of staff that worked on Wii U launch titles. Once they’d grasped the hardware, they wanted to create something innovative.
- Working on a local multiplayer mode in addition to online and Hero Mode
- Hero mode is predominantly a 3D platformer with heavy emphasis on human-squid transformations
- Random matching is done world wide, game tries to place you with players close to your skill level based on ratings
- Tried implementing a system whereby you could give orders to your team mates, but battles were too quick and hectic for them to be effective so they got rid of the feature
- Game won’t use CPU fighters; only once 8 human players have been found will a match start
- Having multiple modes with random matching would limit the number of players per mode, so all the focus is on the 4 vs. 4 for that
- No communication with players you are matched with
- They didn’t think of using Bloopers when they decided on squids (they apparently forgot they existed)
- No money can be earned in Hero Mode. Your points, as displayed at the end of the match, are turned into money and experience points.
- A lot of the music is written by Tooru Minegishi (who has worked on Zelda, Animal Crossing, and Super Mario)

There are a ton of E-rated games that have online voice chat. It’s 2015. This was standardized over the last generation. There is no good reason for Nintendo to keep voice chat out of a game at the very least for a team of friends.
The OPTION should be there. They shouldn’t be policing for parents and anyone else who is old enough can choose whether or not to use the function like almost every other online game out there.
It wouldn’t be so bad if the console had a party chat system where just friends could talk but since it doesn’t, the game should at least feature it.
I don’t like talking to strangers either, but when I game online with friends, we’re always talking, especially if it’s a game where we have to work together. When I’m playing against strangers I usually just turn all voice functions off. Mute everyone else and my mic.

Great idea!! The only issue is that in tons of countries it’s impossible to get a credit card even when you’re above 18. In my country they only give them out if you have a certain amount of income. They don’t care even if you never had any debts or financial trouble, or heck even savings! If you have a lower income than the standard you never will get a credit card here.

They can have an option to turn it off. Cursing isn’t a good enough reason, when the same kids are playing on xbox and ps4 cursing anyway on COD and other games. Nintendo should make it blatantly obvious there is voice chat and have a parental system to lock kids out if a parent wants. Cursing is nowhere near a good enough reason.
I think it is a good enough reason due to the target market. A lot of parents don’t even know what is being said on Xbox Live. In order to know they’d have to actually go online into a game and play. A non-gamer parent would never do that. Also, all of those games are rated M, which parents can choose not to allow their kids to play. If a parent allows them to play an M rated game, then anything said online is fair game IMO. This game will not be rated M, so in order to not have angry parents you don’t allow the unknown commentary to enter the game at all.
I guess they could have the option to turn it on or off, but again I think parents are unaware that an E rated game could have rampant cursing and racism when played online. They’d have to have a big warning somewhere to make it painfully obvious.
Every game with online functions has a disclaimer saying online interactions are not rated. Parents should know by now that they should be cautious and watchful when allowing their children to do ANYTHING online. Video games are not exempt, no matter what rating.

This is a little disappointing because I wanted so badly to communicate with my team during matches but then again there’s no confirmation that it won’t be voice chat between only friends so there is a glimmer of hope that we could get it in some fashion. I’m still buying it day one but damn Nintendo if there’s no voice chat of any kind implemented then you guys missed out on a golden opportunity to really stick it to your critics

Imagine a Coop mode where you team up with online friends to battle CPU enemies that are painting the map simultaneously while trying to stop you from doing the same. (Similar to Plants Vs Zombies Garden Warfare)

Exactly with the 8 players. What happens if one players leaves or disconnects? Will the game be over? At least if not enough players have a 4 vs 3 and have the spot open just incase someone joins.

In this day and age voice chat among teams and friends should be a solid feature included. I understand that a lot of the time, the younger generations just spit trash and say over the top crap. But really, trash talking has always been a part of gaming online for me, not in every game of coarse. It’s the people that let it get to them personally and take it to far that shouldn’t use it.

I want to talk about whatever I want to talk about with people while playing a game. Everyone is different and enjoys different things, so everyone should be considered. Communication is what helps break down the cattle rituals if you have intelligent people. Limiting communication creates far more cattle than having communication would.

Features like a blu ray player and stuff aren’t gaming related, but voice chat is definitely relevant to gaming. If you are playing a game with your friends in person, are you spending the whole time talking about the game, or might you start talking about what you’re gonna do on the weekend or something? Cause when I have friends over playing smash, we talk about all kinds of stuff. So online would be the same, some talk about the game, and some talk about making plans or anything that might come up. Leaving out the option just cause some people might never talk about games is not a good reason to leave out voice chat. Then you are forcing people to talk about a certain thing.

local multiplayer is what i want. hope it is as loud as Mario Kart 8, back in december a disturbed neighbour on the building where i live called the cops on me because my friends and me were playing at high volume, laughing and screaming like we were possessed and it was almost every weekend late at night XD.

I don’t have a CPU and even if I did, I shouldn’t have to skype because nintendo is cheap. If they made a more powerful system, we wouldn’t have this issue. But as USUAL this gen, all my games that should have been the best versions ever turned out lacking incredibly. Smash lagging is unacceptable. The rip off all stars game according to my friend and roomate doesn’t lag and thats on PS3, LAST gen. Nintendo should have beefed this system up, and all their problems they are having would be non-existent. 3rd party would be on board, and so would graphic whore gamers. Voice chat wouldn’t be an issue. Lagging would be much less of an issue. I’m getting so tired of waiting for the perfect smash to truly replace Melee. This smash could have been it but they had to leave out voice chat, limit the HELL out of the online options, and they added even more No Skill Required fighters and camping encouraged fighters like robin and villager who just sit back and spam loid or robin’s thunder. It’s a damn fighting game, get the fuck over and fight losers. Online smash is dead already for many unless it’s with a friend. All I play are spammers literally every match, so I gave up. And combine spamming with lag, it’s just not fun. It lags so damn bad that I will press the C-stick repeatedly yet instead of doing a smash attack, the ONLY thing the C-Stick can do (unless you change your controls), I sit there doing a neutral A attack combo or Tilt A attack, which is IMPOSSIBLE for the C-Stick to do. I’ll literally let go for 5 seconds and then start again, same thing half the time. How the fuck can you play when the buttons don’t even do what they are programmed to do.

It really can’t be that difficult to include different game modes, considering other games have been doing it for many years, with many more players per mode. I know right? I mean, we’re in 2015 and Nintendo STILL is struggling to give us the simplest features the competition has been offering for so long. They seriously need to get with the times, they can’t keep wasting opportunities like this; they’re just ruining their own games, really.

Nope. I’m 30 now, started gaming when I was 4, and I’m at the point where if gaming in general doesn’t improve, I’m becoming more OK with leaving the gaming world.
That’s really unfortunate. Let’s hope the gaming world turns to the better as soon as possible, it can’t afford to lose its early members. You don’t want to leave it to the newer generations, do you? :p

Especially the Super Mario Bros movie, for me. If the movie had came out before the games, I bet it would have been better received. Anyway, it’s not because of the movie’s name that I want my kids to see the movie but more for the fact it has Bob Hoskins & Dennis Hopper in it, two great actors who I felt were the best things about the Super Mario Bros movie.
I feel like Nintendo loves to take 2 steps forward and then take 3 steps back. I went from super hyped for this game to borderline sceptical. :(

So there will be no voice chat. I guess I could get over this. No big deal really, as I don’t like talking to strangers over the internet anyways. But I don’t like the idea of no communication at all via emotes or commands.
So honestly, whats the point in playing with other humans if you cannot communicate in some way? No issuing commands, or tactics, or strategies. You might as well be playing against the cpu. Every match is just going to be every man for himself with no strategy elements?……… boring

Splatoon is going to save the Wii U. Just like how Wind Waker HD, Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D World, The Wonderful 101, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8, and Smash Bros did. Wii U is going to sell 20 million by the end of the year. XD

here is an idea! since parents mostly pay for games and such. and kids not allway knowing how to setup their system. parental lock it.. if you have parental lock on the voice chat is locked! there done and done… whatever happens after that is all on the parents because they were dumb enough to let their dumb kids get dumber!

I respect their decision but that doesn’t mean I like it. Just like with Hyrule Warriors not having online 2 player action made it sell half as good as it should have, Splatoon is doomed to repeat this because of no voice chat. It damn well better have voice chat at least between friends or Nintendo will have once again dropped the ball. *sigh*
I think the reason also has to do with keeping the social aspect in the living room, not solely online. I think Nintendo has made this more than clear on multiple occasions that they try to enhance play, not just online, but between people in the same room.

I wouldn’t use voice chat anyway. Nintendo was stupid to think when working on Gamepad’s volume in 2008 would be acceptable for 2015 anyway. Low ass volume. I tell you the Wii U could have been a hit if they thought about 2015. And the Wii U depends on a battery in 2015. And also knowing they were giving the Game pad features like voice chat, why didn’t they put tons of software with that feature when all these games were in R&D? Also stupid for not thinking of online during 3D World’s R&D and Nintendo Land’s R&D. Also stupid for not adding pikmin 3 with online during Pikmin 3’s R&D? If they made Wii U stronger than it’s online mode it could handle 200 Pikmin on the field. 100 for one player and another 100 for the other player.What the hell do they do in their R&D anyway? Obviously it ain’t thinking 3-5 years ahead like most manufacturers use their R&D for. I bet the 2018 Fusion is 10% stronger than 2013 PS4 while Sony is thinking what in a GPU could be changed 3-5 years from now. By the time Sony figures that out, Nintendo will be new to an X86.

I have to quote the AVGN here: “What were they fucking thinking!?!?” That decision is legitimately stupid and as much as I support the Big N (been a customer since 1998), I won’t deny that they’ve been out of touch with reality and the modern world lately.
So how will we issue orders to our team-mates for better coordination? Will we be force to just adapt to how the battle turns out and just decide for ourselves what will be best? That could harm the team-player focus in this game.

I would be perfectly fine with just commands. There has to be a way to communicate with the other three people on your team! Their excuse is poor too! That the matches are too chaotic and don’t last long enough? Well, that sounds like that is something you guys need to fix!
My hype for this game has been dialed down a notch.
The average gamer is 30 years old. The majority of gamers are 18 and older. Yea, there are alot of 10-17 year old gamers, but they are the minority. By a large percentage..
So why does nintendo continue to support and even target the minority? When will they start showing some love to the majority? That is the core reason Nintendo is behind in sales. Because they only go after a sliver of the gamers. It’s like the gameing world is a large pizza. Instead of trying to win over the whole pizza, Nintendo is just trying to appease one slice.
The most ironic part about this? It’s the 10 and 12 year olds that use voice chat the most. The very kids Nintendo is “TRYING” to protect, are the very same kids that want and abuse voice chat…. Nintendo… my god, wake up already.
